I think this game is all about how well our strikers play. Our defence is good enough to limit the chances City create, and while you can never be completely confident about shutting out City away, I don't see us conceding several. If Rashford and/or Martial hit their best form we can definitely get the goals we need to win. If we start fluffing chances left right and centre again though...

Optimistically, Rashford and Martial play well, get a goal each & we beat em 2-1.

Or a ban maybe. Managers get banned for less than this. That should apply to players as well.
Yeah, that's pretty strong. Think FA would need to act quick (as if they will even look at this), although Yaya played 120 mins yesterday, so would he start anyway? If Silva and Fernandinho are out, he'd probably need to though. I have nothing against Delph starting.

I wonder if Herrera will man mark someone (De Bruyne?) again.

His performance against Chelsea was so fantastic Mourinho must consider it but City aren't especially reliant on one player and Guardiola will probably be prepared for it.

Would like to see Martial and Rashford high up against their defense with a stable midfield. Mourinho should go for it. We have nothing to lose. He's already hinted our eggs are in the Europa League basket.

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Blind Young
    Fellaini
    Pogba - Herrera
    Lingard -------------- Martial
    Rashford
Then rest Pogba, Bailly, Young and Rashford for the Swansea game.

Personally, I think it's our midfield that's key. The individual performances in defense might not matter if we don't stop the ball form going through the channels to both Sane and Sterling, especially Sane. We have to find a way of stopping the ball reaching them high up the pitch.
And because of that, I think Mourinho is going to do what he did in the League Cup. He's going to press.

Draw's really not good enough here, doubt City will drop more than possibly 2 points in the rest of their fixtures.

    Boro (a)
    Palace (h)
    Leicester (h)
    West Brom (h)
    Watford (a)

    Same thing with Pool:

    Watford (a)
    So'ton (h)
    West Ham (a)
    Boro (h)

I can see Liverpool dropping points in every one of those matches, bar 'boro at home. I doubt we'll edge City out of the top 4 regardless of this match, so Liverpool's results are the ones to watch imo.

Agree on the bolded part. None of Liverpool's opponents have anything to play for though. Might of course have a positive effect on some (looking at Watford the most), but West Ham and So'ton are not in great form.

    Yeah, that's a good point - I didn't consider that.

Not an easy run in for City by any means though. Palace, Leicester and West Brom can all easily cause problems for City, and I'd very very surprised if they only dropped two more points from those games.

I'd say it depends a lot on whether they (Palace, Leicester, WBA) are in the races. Again, teams with nothing to play for. We've got Swansea, Spurs and Arsenal very much fighting until the last minute of the season.

I think we have the players for a 343 ala Chelsea.

    DDG
    Darmian-Bailly-Blind
    Valencia---Herrera--Pogba---Shaw
    Mkh - Rashford - Martial
But, Mourinho will probably start with Lingard in there some where.

I think Lingard might not start. He's been in our XI non stop recently. Martial's performance against Burnley deserves XI spot Vs City and also good timing to rest Lingard.

It is a tough one, but obviously Jose trusts Lingard more in the big games. Which game is bigger at this point? City or Celta Vigo? Lingard may of course still start both and miss Swansea, as he tends to get subbed at 60-70 minutes most of the time when other players don't. I actually think the only guaranteed starter for the front three here is Rashford. Then it's out of Lingard/Martial/Mkhitaryan for the other two places. I'm almost certain Rooney will only be on the bench due to just coming back and playing the full 90.

Same team that played Chelsea (Blind for Rojo) seems like a good shout, but I can also see Carrick starting over Fellaini or Pogba (if he's injured).

We're not really favored to get top 4 after all the points we missed so why get nervous ? Let's try our best and see what'll happen. The 3 matches of the Europe League are those who we should be nervous at. The league, on other hand, don't have much hope from it from the start so anything will be good for me.

They'll be nervous. They'll be scared shipless of Rashford too. I think we'll be having a right go in the league from now until Palace and it may reap rich rewards. It will be tricky balancing EL, but the momentum is with us. I hear Aguero is struggling btw? Rashford and 1 nil to us.

If they play Delph and Yaya as their deepest midfielders I'll be extremely disappointed if we don't dominate the midfield.

    Anyone know who's reffing this?

I'd hate for it to be any of the card-happy twats: Mason, Oliver, Atkinson or Clattenburg.
Hasn't been announced yet. It's not any of Moss, Dean, Jones, Mason, Attwell, Tierney, Madley or Friend (they have matches Tue/Wed, although Friend/Madley only as 4th officials). So it most likely is Oliver or Atkinson. Can't see Clattenburg getting this after the fiasco in the home game against City.

This is do or die time. I want us to win this match and drag ourselves into 4th place. It would be a mental barrier overcome more than anything.

I want to see a 4312 formation, setup for the counter attack.

    DDG
    Valencia Bailly Blind Shaw
    Herrera Carrick Pogba
    Miki
    Rashford Martial

    or

    DDG
    Valencia Bailly Blind Shaw
    Herrera Carrick Fellaini
    Pogba
    Rashford Martial

If Pogba is injured I think we should go for a simple 443

    DDG
    Valencia Bailly Blind Shaw
    Herrera Carrick Fellaini
    Lingard Rashford Martial

Keep it tight at the back, hit them with the pace and have a high workrate.

Thanks for looking into this. Our record with either ref isn't great, especially Oliver. :nervous:

    Oliver:

    Watford 3-1 United
    Everton 1-1 United
    United 1-1 Liverpool

    Record: 0-2-1
In all three games, he has given penalties against us.
In our FA Cup tie against Chelsea, he sent Herrera off.

    Atkinson:

    Chelsea 4-0 United
    United 3-1 Sunderland

    Record 1-1-0

The sample size is quite small though. The pens as far as I remember were stonewallers, too. But I don't have much confidence in Oliver either. Although it's the same with every ref in the country. Video assistance can't come soon enough.

Fair point. The sending off of Herrera in the FA Cup tie was debatable I felt and cost us the game.

I'd rather have Atkinson then Oliver too. Can't stand the guy.

You just know that prick Oliver is gonna get this. He's our Mike Dean. God forbid you tug his shirt but feel free to headbutt him.

Full quote on Sunday's ref by Toure:

“I think the referees have to stop this,” said Yaya Toure.

“I am very disappointed. It is not the first time, there have been a couple of times.

“Maybe on Thursday we are going to have a better referee or maybe play without a referee - I’d prefer that.”
    Must have some concequences.

All three pens were correct IMO. The only mistake on those three matches is that he didn't call a foul on Martial, which resulted in us conceding.

In FA Cup, it was an another mistake to send off Herrera.

Hopefully the big belgian fella will be at the tip of the diamond. He'll never stop harrassing them and causing chaos.

Lingard and Miki wide, with Rashford up top. Wouldn't mind seeing Martial up top too, but don't want him wide. Rashers is an option very wide left as they like to keep their FB's narrow.

Rest of the team pretty much picks itself.

Agreed - he did make the correct decisions with regards to the pens. He seems to be a bad omen for us though.

Remember when he sent off Di Maria for a shirt tug, yet this was perfectly acceptable:
