It may have been because he’s struggled against quick, powerful forwards like Lukaku and Van Gaal thought Phil Jones was better equipped to deal with him. Van Gaal hasn’t got any other option than to start with Blind today. He can expect Lukaku to sit on him for most of the afternoon. He’ll fancy his chances against Blind rather than Smalling, who can match him physically.
