This game is at home and Southampton aren't particularly good.
We seem to have come out of that terrible December (relegation) form.
Why do you think we will lose?
Just joking. More so, that it wouldn't surprise me given how this season has unfolded for United.

Plus didn't they win at Old Trafford last season?

Mané better not turn up for this match. I had him in my FF for about four weeks and he got one assist in that period.

... And for the purpose of us winning the game, of course. :D

Is there any chance Carrick will be fit for this? Otherwise I fear we'll be watching another Fellaini Schneiderlin shit show in the middle.

They've looked significantly better in their last two games. 3-0 against West Brom and 2-0 against Watford, neither are pushovers. Tadic has stepped up and is looking pretty good from what I've seen. They don't really have anything to fear in this game. They definitely won't go down given the dross that is below them.

Definitely won't be an easy game. Given our form and injuries, they are capable of beating us. I think we'll shade it by a goal. Hopefully the Liverpool game has given the side a lot of confidence, even if the performance was drab.

I predict they'll get in behind us quite easily it just depends whether they'll have their scoring boots on and whether we can outscore them.

    Score draw 1-1

i'd go with most of that... except for lingard. i'd sooner stick AP there, even if he he's not a conventional winger. he's definitely deserving of a start.

This is the team I would like to see:-
    De Gea
    Darmian--Smalling--Blind--CBJ
    Schneiderlin--Herrera
    Lingard--Rooney--Memphis
    Martial

subs: Romero, Varela, McNair, Carrick, Pereira, Januzaj, Mata

    • GK and defence pick themselves
    • Praying that LVG gives Herrera a chance a little deeper than normal (no chance I know we'll see Fellaini!)
    • Memphis is due a chance
    • Lingard done nothing wrong to suggest he should be left out
    • Rooney & Martial both in their best positions
I'd love to see Pereira off the bench playing in Herrera's number 8 role in this formation

United squad: De Gea, Romero, Varela, Darmian, Smalling, Blind, McNair, Borthwick-Jackson, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Fellaini, Pereira, Mata, Januzaj, Memphis, Lingard, Rooney, Martial
This is the squad for tomorrows game. It actually makes we want to cry at the quality. We should have been bringing in the big name players while we were still winning, but we held onto players for too long, gave other too much of a chance. The ones bolded should not be near our squad, the ones in italics are reserve players with some talent. The rest apart from DDG and Martial are good squad players who should have world class players in with them. The fact that some think they are our better players just sums us up. I just worry that we missed the boat in getting the quality we needed to keep us right at the top. The fact that we are in such a quandry over Shaw being missing, another kid. Yes we have injuries but to be honest he is the only one we do miss. Carrick and BFS are good but past their best. Rojo and Jones are squad players. If we don't bring in top class options to actually make us into a team and knit us together then there might be a few barren years. We'll hopefully win 2-1 tomorrow but if the team he names first don't do it, I have doubts about the bench changing it.

This is not the squad of a team that is the third richest in the world, or more to the point, unfortunately it is.

After my rant we will likely win at a canter.

Yep, we all know most of this mate.

Have to pick you up on this line though... he's isn't just some kid, he's a £30m England wonderkid fullback!

I agree that we are missing him and that he would be first choice, but this squad is sadly lacking in quality. Right through the spine. That is where it should be. We have DDG, we need a world class CB or at least a partner of similar quality to Smalling, plus another high quality backup. A powerhouse in midfield that can run the game and a world class striker. I will give Memphis another season to settle but if not we need a winger on both sides. How the hell have the club that prides itself on being run properly let us get in such a state?

Be nice to see a goal or two in first half and first back to back wins in the league for a while but I won't hold my breath. Every game is a struggle no matter who we play and this will be the same.

Our lack of consistency worries me. Southampton are coming on the back of 4 straight away defeats in the league, but we seem incapable of putting a strong, winning run. If we exclude last season's consecutive wins against Spurs, Liverpool and City, I can't think of another strong run of wins under Van Gaal.

Hopefully the start of the year has been a turning point for us (has been said many times before, though), at least in terms of results. If we can go on a run, then probably even the title wouldn't be out of reach.

We need to win against Southampton and Stoke to put more pressure on Tottenham and then take it from there. Hopefully Rooney will maintain his good form.

I think De Gea, Smalling, Shaw, Schneiderlin, Martial are a great 5 to build round, and the likes of Lingard and Memphis have really good potential, and likes of Varela and BJ may emerge too. Then the likes of Herrera and Darmian are solid. And I'm fairly certain, Rooney, Mata and Schweiny would do better under a less constricted system. Jones may yet do a Smalling. Even Rojo does a job,

So put that lot altogether, and you're not a million miles away, a change of style +1 star player could really help out.

First 10 games = 13 points and then we won a tough 6 in a row against Palace, Arsenal, Hull, Stoke, Southampton and Arsenal, and then a draw to Aston Villa of all teams mean't the run came to an end.

There was also a run of 6 wins against Sunderland, Newcastle, Spurs, Liverpool, Villa and Man City as you mentioned.

Assuming there is progress we should be looking to go on a straight run of 7 or more matches but I think we miss Angel di Maria who was very creative in the final third even if only from the bench, right now we aren't creative but it is understandable when you look at our attack, with an in form Wayne Rooney we're a different animal since we are lacking goals and even the current version in form will produce goals.

That must have escaped my memory, cheers. I guess it's because this season feels like an eternity with the same old shite week in week out with very few exceptions and it's only January.

Hopefully we'll go on a winning run, but I just can't see it. It's been ''one step forward, two steps back'' so far.

Oh wow, I just realized I can reply here! Awesome! Unfortunately it will be another game I have to miss while I am at work but I will be checking in on the score regularly.

I get the feeling that Ronald Koeman has this slight voodoo over Van Gaal. That is not to say that he is a better manager or that he is going to go out there and come up trumps every time but I feel he has got this "under the skin" type of effect on Van Gaal and he knows that really revving his lads up to get something out of this game is going to have a big impact. I felt that way last season home and away which were similar patchy performances only to go win, loss, this season win... ..The game at St Mary's was a very fortunate result. Not the greatest performance but sticking the ball in the net when we needed to. That has really been a dry spot of late, maybe I am not articulating it correctly but it is something I have noticed, like a personal grudge or gripe or something.

Anywho onto the game I have a feeling it will follow a similar pattern to a lot of our home games that went through the start of the season. Keep the ball a lot, get hit on the break, scramble for parity and lose it late on.

    Hope I am wrong!

I'm going for a 3-0 win. Wish Felli wasn't starting, but I doubt van Gaal will give someone like Pereira a start even though he deserves it. Rooney to continue the hot streak, Martial to add one sweet finish and one goal from Mike.

Both these men know each other well.

Koeman was a hard-nosed, tough player mentally. He once traded his shirt with opponent Olaf Thon only to admit he'd wiped his ass with it. It became a minor scandal. Later on he sang the cirtues of a two-footed crunching tackle as "beautiful", which was not received well either. It was a minor miracle that as a player he reached the absolute top since he was always the slowest player on the pitch, which speaks for his tactical nous and concentration.

As a trainer he has been developing steadily. Van Gaal butted heads with him at Ajax when van Gaal was technical director and Koeman trainer, especially over Zlatan. Van Gaal overstepped his bounds when he explained to Zlatan how a number 9 should move, and both Zlatan and Koeman were not amused.

As a trainer, Koeman is a practical coach who is good at setting up a defence and in a natural way demands respect in a dressing room. At Ajax, his door was always open, but the only player who regularly dared to step through it was Wesley Sneijder.

Van Gaal is as a coach more special, with a more idealistic view, but there is no one Koeman wants to beat more.

We can expect Southampton to go all-out. If they play for their trainer, this is a cupfinal for them.

Nice thoughts. Thanks for that. I did know they had history at Ajax but the insight into the dispute is much appreciated.

Wishful thinking. I've got the same but with Fellaini in for Januzaj next to Schneiderlin, Herrera 10, Mata right.

Big game this for LvG, what is it now 10-11 games since we scored in the first half at home?

We have in the main been dreadful at home, it has been months since we served up anything decent at OT, and for me we need have a real 'performance' for the home fans today, if we can then LvG will really have emerged from his bad spell, especially after the Anfiled victory, but if we go and produce a Norwich style display then he's right back to square one again.

Felli is a certainty. It's most likely between BJ or Varela, but I think his solid performance against Pools would have helped his cause.

    Obertans #1 fan.
Woke up to the bad news that the lad I was supposed to go with today has had someone crash into his car over night, meaning he can't make it up today. He's gutted.

However, this means I'm going to go with my girlfriend. She's been to two United games before. 7-1 vs Blackburn when Berbatov scored 5 and 2-0 against Arsenal in the FA Cup when Fabio and Rafael played on the wings and we still battered them.

I'm sure this is a good omen. We're going to score 4+ goals today, so if you want to put money on it, I'll take a 3% cut later.
