He's probably not wrong to be fair!
Tbh I couldn't care less about the capital one cup. I'd much rather see our young prospects like Wilson, Januzaj, lawrence and powell start these games even if it means not winning the trophy. Fielding strong XIs for these games and actually going all out for a cup like this just reeks of desperation. Though I think he was joking.

I think we might see something like this:

    --------------Lindegaard----------
    ---Keane-----Jones----Blackett----
    Rafael----------------------------James
    ------------Pearson--Powell--------
    ---------------Januzaj--------------
    ---------Wilson-----Keane

Powell, Lawrence, Varela and Vermijl are all in the squad but they're not among the options for the line-up prediction game? Will they be added or should I just pick somebody else instead?

Without a European campaign and with a new manager i don't know how United will approach this competition this year.

Rest Rooney and Fletch, but the rest of the squad from sunday should be involved.

I'm expecting a strong side to give minutes to those who need it but to also build confidence

    ---------------Amos---------------
    ----Keane----Evans----Blackett----
    Valencia--------------------Januzaj
    -------Cleverley--Fletcher-------
    --------------Kagawa--------------
    ----------RVP-------Welbeck----------

I'd say Powell and Wilson are almost certain to start having trained with the first team last week and were with the side at the Sunderland match. If they weren't going to play here then they would have featured in the Liverpool reserve match.

I'm pretty sure LVG will stick with a 3-5-2 to gain more confidence in that formation. Can't see extreme changes in the line-up too because he can't afford/want avoid another slip.

    De Gea
    Valencia M.Keane Jones Blackett James
    Fletcher Cleverley
    Januzaj
    Welbeck Van Persie

Fletcher and Cleverley two days after such a laborious and awful performance? Hopefully not.

I don't really see a reason why we would put out a squad of youngsters, this is a perfect opportunity for our team to click under 'easier' opposition and gain a bit of confidence and momentum. Unless we go on major cup runs there is no risk of burnout this year. The only changes I can see is Fletcher and RVP to be rested and maybe Januzaj and Welbeck to start.

Wilson should play. If he's not going to play against MK Dons, when will he play? The Cup matches are important for young players and players in need of minutes especially when there are fewer games this season without Europe.

I think we should play Anderson. No one is going to sign him and I don't think he'll look out of his depth against MK Dons.

I hope he plays the strongest team available and get them match sharp and gelling. Two games in and we have been playing torrid football. Screw playing youngsters, we need the first team to get going.
....that could of course back fire if our strongest available got beat though!

The full Premier League squad is now available, which means the following players have been added:

    Nick Powell
    Tom Lawrence
    Guillermo Varela
    Marnick Vermijl
    Tom Thorpe
    Davide Petrucci
    Joe Rothwell

Absolutely, Ando over Cleverly all day long, lets see how fit he is, how determined he is, Cleverly had his chance against Cattermole and got bossed. Anderson, Pearson, anyone.

Cheers. I'd replace Petrucci with Ben Pearson though.

Petrucci seems to be on his way out pretty much and not even starting for the U21s.

I can almost guarantee our back up players/youngsters will put in a better performance.

Well, he'll probably see this game as a great chance to get to know them first hand in my opinion. Van Gaal is all about giving youngsters a chance.

Wasn't that the whole point of pre-season? We couldn't have had a much better one, either. I'd at least like to see the youngster midfielders given a chance, specially after our senior midfielders display the other day. It's only fair.

That's what I'd love to see. With a bench full of first-teamers to step in if things get hairy. But I can't see a side like that playing with as little vim and vigour as our (very injury-hit) first team did against Sunderland.

I love your team but I just question the lack of inexperience in the middle of the park. Anderson for Rothwell maybe? Would love to see Varela and Andreas on the bench too.
