Yeah. Winnings a habit that we should try to keep until the final. 3 losses leading up to it would be terrible for morale, even if they're meaningless.
There's no reason to lose to Southampton away playing the first team, and Arsenal and Tottenham away in these conditions are understandable results, specially after an unbeaten run like ours. Crystal Palace's game nobody will care, really, even more so with lots of youngsters.

    It's just two games though.

Jose has already that we would rest against Palace if we are in the final.

With our luck with injuries, we are likely to get a serious injury in one of these pointless games.

Also a playing a high energy side like Ajax, we need all the rest we can get. They only have one game left.
Three, and if we approach them right we could still get fourth.

I'm a realist so I know it's a long shot, and rest the players that need it, just not them all for every game, and lets give it our best shot.

If we lose today then it'll be over, and I'll buy into this blase approach then.

I had that approach for the Arsenal game tbh. Want to see 2/3 youngsters given an opportunity along with some fringe players and a few first reamers. There's a balance between resting players and keeping them match fit for the final.
Ya it was hard for the Arsenal game as it was the first time adopting this mentality and we still had the semi final to navigate but yes I'm in the same camp in that I will try to sit back and enjoy the match, hopefully see some youngsters, but try not to get too invested in the result.

We've only won 1 of our last 5 in all comps, let's hope for a better result today, even playing the kids.

We have nothing to play for here, I just hope that we can go out and play some attacking football now rather than try and defend for our lives, that would be awful watch again.

A United supporting mate of mine wants Spurs to win so White Hart Lane gets a good sendoff, absolutely ridiculous if you ask me.

The thing with Mourinho is that he never does that. Even if he knows there's a big chance of losing, he'll prefer defending for a draw or a narrow defeat.

You can't be a realist if you think we can get 4th.

Let me explain to you why its not happening.

Arsenal have two games left. Both against teams that they easily best even if they had something to play for.

Sunderland first- I watched that team play 90 min yesterday. They have given up. Gave Swansea a training exercise. Plus it's away. Plus they have David Moyes as Manager.

Everton at home too: Everton havent won at Arsenal in over two decades . Defeat here could possibly see Liverppool miss out on top 4 too. No incentive whatsoever to turn up. The last time Liverpool needed Everton to do them a huge favour was against City in the 2014 title race. No surprises what happened. And Everton were at home then.

Arsenal are also in form having won 5 on the bounce.

Liverpool have Boro (Relegated and woeful yesterday too and West Ham left)

We also have a vastly weaker goal difference and struggle to score goals ,playing away against a top 4 team (zero away wins against the top 5 this season).

    That's not realism at all.

I think you missed the point, he did say it was a long shot to be fair!

The main point is that our domestic season is over but we should play as if it's any other game and continue to win as many points as possible.

Realism is still trying to do something even if you accept the chances of success are slim, well is for me in this instance anyway.

I know you are probably right, but if the chance is still there then it's worth fighting for imo.

    It's beyond a long shot.

My reason for explaining all this is simple.

We probably will rest players today and not win. The caf usual suspects will lose their minds and have a go at the manager for not playing a full strength side, even when that was the most sensible thing to do.

There is nothing realistic about thinking we will make too 4. We need to be realistic and focus fully for that Europa league final. It will be a tougher game than most expect.

Our players are on their last legs.

I still want us to win all 3 games, but not at the expense of the Europa final. That's a massive game for us.

We're splitting hairs on terminology whether it's a long shot or almost impossible to get top 4, but that's not really the point.

We should try and win every game we can, not roll over and give it up because our domestic season is all but over.

Against Southampton in the final, half the team had played in the previous Thursday night, and the rest just a week ago, after some serious run of games. It's not comparable, if we only play the starters now a week before the final, having rested them the games before, like we're doing. Anyhow, we don't have to have as many rest as them. Actually, in this phase, a 13 days rest should be counterproductive, and we might see some players out of focus.
Even if we had played with all reserves in this Thursday night it wouldn't have demolished that they got 15 days resting and preparation and it never made them look rusty so why will we appear rusty if we rested some players who are very, very tired ?

Will Ajax be rusty and not in form because they'll rest 10 days before the final ?

Here is one suggestion from Stuart Mathieson.

It combines youth and experience, with the likes of Smalling, Jones, Mkhitaryan, Mata, Blind and Martial all competing for places in Stockholm.

This will be a gruesome watch. More invested in the game before in terms of watching Liverpool hopefully lose.....

Mkhitaryan started three games in a row, although he was substituted in all of them, so, not seeing him starting… Also, Blind was pretty poor against Celta… Bailly is a sure starter, etc. These guys don't know s…

How often has Mourinho started Blind as an LB in a four-man back line? I think Darmian will start, no?

We will probably lose and this place will have a meltdown as usual.
