Thought he did very well against Wolves. Deserves a run of starts now.
Thought he deserved it after his performance vs PSG and with Matic out. We rushed Matic back too soon and I think its cost us.

With regards to Scott McT, has he ever let us down? I dont mean him being thrown in at CB for a political play by our previous manager. But I mean put in midfield (in some big important matches). Has he hidden away or made glaring mistakes that cost the team? I really cant remember any.

He does the basics and does it well and keeps it simple which allows others to shine (well if they are bothered that is)

I don't really remember anything. He's been a solid 6/10 player for us so far. He's done nothing wrong but equally he's yet to really stand out in a game, and I'm not sure its his style to do that. I think he will always be a one or two touch player whose primary job is to help get the ball off the opposition and then give it to our more creative players.

Nothing wrong with that and all good teams need a player or two who does it, but for the modern football fan that's not enough. They want to count the key passes, passes completed and defensive interventions.

Potentially my only issue is the progression of the club. We went from Roy Keane to Michael Carrick, now we might be going from Michael Carrick to Scott McTominay. It's happening all over the pitch and at some point we need to reverse it. At 22 lots can still happen but if we're planning to establish him as our starting midfielder hoping he will reach that level is a big risk to take.

He made an error against Chelsea last season that gave away a goal but it didn't cost us the game I think.

The main criticism I had was he doesn't do enough with the ball and always takes the easy options. But it looks like it was more of a confidence thing than anything else. Looking forward to see him improve the creative aspects of his game.

He probably deserved to keep his spot in all honesty, Matic has struggled recently.

Well there's the question of what role you want him in as well. Played box to box vs Wolves and caused havoc going forward but he played 6 vs PSG and done well as well. I'd have him over Matic but over Ander in that more advanced role? It's a tough one as Ander hasn't exactly been stellar lately

For sure he has the mentality to play in such a big game. That being said, this is a new test in terms of the quality of opposition.

Since I probably give Scott the benefit of the doubt most games, here are the areas I think he needs to improve:

- Headers (attacking): He currently has 5 headed attempts at goal in the PL, mostly from corners. The total xG on those headers is slightly over 1 so you would hope he would have scored at least one header. The diving header against Wolves was a decent attempt, the keeper was moving across his line so not easy to calculate where he would be positioned to make a save, yet still it was a chance he should have scored and would have done so with slightly better direction on the header. The flick header that went over the keeper but also the bar from Sanchez's cross against Fulham was promising. Most of the time he seems to lack the physicality to win the challenge in the opposing penalty area. Fellaini was tall and excellent in the air for United. Scott is just tall right now.

- Creative passing: He has to offer more in this area. He can pass between the lines (Palace away match), and there have been a few nicely weighted passes for a full-back or wide player to run on to. I believe if he was to get a run of games in the team, he would gain the confidence to do more of the type of between the lines passes that we have already seen him demonstrate. Whether he can execute through-balls and the subtlety we see from Pogba, may be unrealistic. I hope he at least tries more ambitious passes in training, with the intention of using it in match situations in a few years' time, once he has mastered the technique to some extent.

- Long passes: His long passing is rubbish. Occasionally he will chip the ball successfully to a runner, such as his pass to Lukaku in the build-up to Lingard's winner against Chelsea, or the pass to Mata in the Benfica match. From time to time he will hit a cross-field pass that is fine. Apart from that, the weight and direction is too often miles off. Needs to improve a lot just to reach a vaguely acceptable level.

- Making himself available to receive passes: When posters criticise Scott for hiding when we are in possession, I think there is some truth to it. Again, this is an area of his game that I believe would naturally improve if he was a regular starter. Perhaps I'm being overly optimistic. He could learn from Fred in this aspect of the game. Actively look to get more involved in the build-up.

- Driving forwards with the ball once he has won it: Too often the opportunity to move forwards is available but he doesn't take it. Got to be more ambitious when the space opens up, even though the next pass is likely to be far more difficult than he typically makes.

- Challenges: In his first full season he was guilty of wild tackles immediately after he had lost possession, that earned him a booking. He picked up 4 yellow cards last season in about 1300 mins playing time. I'm not sure if he has learned to stay calm, or if this type of situation hasn't occurred as often in his limited mins on the pitch this season.

- Control: His control isn't great. Unlike other aspects of his game, I doubt whether he can make much of an improvement at this stage. I'd like to see him reduce the number of poor touches. Concentration appears to be the issue for some other players but I'm not sure if that's the case with Scott.

- Final third play: Massive room for improvement here. Part of it is simply understanding what tends to work in this area of the pitch and what doesn't. Then tons of practice in training. If he is given 25 PL starts in a season, will he deliver at least a couple of assists, perhaps from good crosses ? Can he find space to score relatively simple goals ? Or set-up someone else to make an assist ? Right now, it seems to me that Fred and Andreas are miles ahead of him in terms of their quality and contribution in the final third. If Ander Herrera leaves and Scott is given the chance to replace him (seems unlikely), I would be concerned that he might not come close to matching Ander's contribution in the final third.

- Defensive play: Room for improvement defending corners, reducing the number of times his man gets free, being careful not to risk giving away a penalty while still making it difficult for his opponent. Very few of our players seem to have mastered the precise off-side line we are meant to be holding. Tracking runners, interceptions. I think small improvements are achievable in these areas.

- Distance Covered, physical strength: Right now these might be his assets but I only have access to CL stats for distance covered, so can't tell if PSG was a one-off mega effort, that he can't sustain, or whether he is capable of regularly out-running our other central midfielders. Similarly, he appears fairly strong (apart from aerial challenges) but probably room for improvement here too.

- Left foot: I have noticed him play some competent, easy, left-footed passes. Still huge room for improvement compared to the likes of Carrick and Pogba. This might have to be a long term project.

Anyway, perhaps in a year I'll take a look to see if there have been any noticeable improvements. One of the things I'm very poor at predicting, is the extent to which young players will manage to improve certain aspects of their game. Welbeck's composure in the penalty area and Januzaj's shooting and his lack of physical strength, being classic examples of where I've just assumed they would naturally get better. The time frame for improvement is another aspect that I have absolutely no idea about.

Anyone noticed anything else that he might improve ? Must be a lot I have missed.

Matic is the risky option. His carelessness against a team like them is a terrifying prospect.

No you covered all the points. His first touch and passing accuracy needs work. The pass for Young was a hospital ball and Young shouldn't have gone to the ground.

Matic is indeed the risky option: most teams do drills involving static dummies in practice sessions, so I'd expect them to be well equipped to deal with him.

Lots of talk of us buying Rice (20 yrs old) but is he actually any better than McT (22 yrs old)? Genuine question as I’ve not seen much of Rice and have been impressed with McT. Would welcome any considered responses...

I don’t know about any of these links. I feel it’s the usual high profile player in the media. The run out of story ideas and so make them all our number one targets to get eyes back on the stories. One things for sure though, I’d hate to Scott pushed to the side before he even gets a chance to succeed or fail.

All that said I’ve not seen much of rice either so call this a +1 for opinions on him and whether or not he’s an improvement over McT.

It was said recently by ole I think that he sees mctominnay playing further up.

The goal against wolves showed this & u was surprised that he played Alot of the game further forward than Fred.

He's pretty box to box, he's an underrated tackler, so good at winning the ball back.
Sure it's one game but I was surprised how mctomminay played against wolves. Not exactly in terms of quality but it felt like having 2 pogba's in terms of box to box as you said & their physicality.

Rice is better at long passes. Likes to tackle. Has twice as many mins in the PL this season as McTominay has since his debut for United. Regular game time tends to improve performance level, in part through better understanding with team-mates. Apart from that, their skill-sets are similar.

Anyone getting lots of playing time in the PL aged 20 is likely, though not certain, to become a very good player. But the same is true of any central midfielder who puts together the collection of performances in big games, in their early 20s, that McTominay has done. Toss of a coin which player turns out to be better.

50% of transfers don't work (big research study in Pay As You Play book by Paul Tomkins and one other author), sometimes for reasons that weren't even on your radar when the decision was made. Being a regular starter for West Ham is different from being a midfield option for United. Who knows how Rice would react to playing well then getting benched for a month, then put straight into a big game ? Never mind getting dropped for a poor performance.

Right now we don't know if McTominay's performance level would improve, decline, or stay the same, if given a decent run in the team. We won't know until it happens.

Rice has 5 years left on his current contract and West Ham also have a one year option on top of that. Forget any idea of them accepting a reasonable amount. PL clubs simply don't need the money anymore. Might be different if he had one year left on his deal.

Not a transfer I would agree with at this stage. If McTominay gets 25 PL starts in a season and fails to take his opportunity, then pay big money for a suitable talent with a similar profile.

For me Scott is basically taking the squad position as backup DM/CM which means Ole and Co. can focus on improving the starting 11 with full faith in Scott.

McTominay thrives in big games. I would play McTominay in both Barca games, partnered with Herrera at home and Matic away.

Yes. He's better defensively and a better passing range and can use both feet.

McTominay is better in the air. And Ole has said they believe hes better in an attacking role than sitting

Must start with Herrera against Barcelona. Need the intensity against their technically gifted team.

If McTominay was English, he would have already been declared next Busquets by the press.

He is english, born in lancaster. He plays for scotland because his old man was scottish. If he does turn out to be a great player, you can blame southgate for the utter lack of interest in getting him to commit to england.

I know that, I meant if he represented england, like all of a sudden Rice is new Roy Keane. In my humble opinion McTominay has a higher ceiling than Rice.

This kid is growing on me. I have to admit that I was one of the people who was saying he was a joke. I take it back. He was thrown in the deep end against Liverpool (when an in form Matic pulled out last min). Then he put in a shift away to PSG. I think that actually gave him the confidence he needed.
He was our best player against Wolves. He should be the first name on the team sheet against Barcalona where I think that match will suit him.

Whilst your overall point is correct there was nothing wrong with the pass to Young. He just made an absolute mess of it.

And he scored his first goal thanks to great positioning. Seems like he can develop in to a DM with an eye for goal now and then too.

But yeah, if he does come good we will never hear the end of it from Mourinho.

Whilst I give Mourinho massive credit for plucking Scott from the u23s and giving him a chance it must also be remembered he used him as a pawn to make a point against the board multiple times and that, without a doubt, negatively impacted Scott's standing among the fans.

People have decided he was used as a pawn. He was playing in big games and performing, that's what matters and what counts. The fault is with the people thinking like that. People lambasting the lad behind their keyboards meanwhile he was giving everything for the team.

Yeah agreed he played very well in some massive games. I've rated him since Mourinho introduced him into the team.

However in those games he played at CB I am certain that was Mourinho making a point to the board regarding transfers (or lack of). That's what I was referencing in my post and his performances at CB had an impact on how fans rated him as a midfielder unfortunately.

It's a shame some fans are/were so eager to criticize a young lad coming through the academy. Some of the shit posted was ridiculous.

Jose also used Herrera in defence, Pogba as a false CB as well. He was looking for a way to improve build up in general.

For me, yes.

I think it should bed instead of Matic. McT has been magnificent in the defensive midfield role where Matic has been good under Solskjær. Especially in the the matches against better opposition. And I think McT is a little bit quicker on the ball and more moveable than Matic. McT is also better at the long range passing, which would give Lingard, Rashford and Martial better chance of getting full exploitations of the quick counter attack.

So what's the opinion? Is starting him against Barca a risk or the better option in comparison to Matic?
If we try to fight Barca’s midfield with technical attributes, we will struggle. The best option for us is fight them with intensity & pace. McT is a better option for that, whether he’s going to play bad or no that’s another thing. But we saw how poor Matic was against PSG, Matic is positioning poor, slower, doesn’t offer much with his passing & lazy to track his man. I don’t see it risky to play McT over Matic, Matic will likely be headless chicken just like the PSG game.

I'm honestly confident that if he was to play vs Barca he'd have a good game regardless of the result. He's yet to let us down in a big game.
