Bruno made contact with the ball but did lindelof close his eyes and lower his head almost completely?

Lindelof is fairly average, he's weak, terrible in the air, and isn't all that good on the ball. Despite all that, it is ridiculous to blame him for Bruno nicking the header away from him . The only possible thing he could be blamed for there is not yelling for it loud enough and we'll never know how loud he claimed it so that is just a waste of time.

It skimmed Brunos head and made a very very small difference. If he didn't close his eyes and duck down like he was about to get a smack in the face he would have cleared it himself.

He's just too much of a scaredy cat in the air to be a top centre back. Maguire isn't perfect by any means but at least he's not scared of ruining his pretty face when a ball comes into the box.

Thank you. Exactly as you said, the skim wouldn't have made a difference if this dude didn't lower his head and close his eyes.

Anyone who's played football and sees that can tell you that he got afraid of the ball there.

The skim has made a clear difference as it’s changed the trajectory of the ball. He lowered his head because that is where the ball was going. He can’t predict that Bruno is going to get a touch on it. If he jumped higher and Bruno missed the ball would have hit him square in the face. He probably did close his eyes because he is a bit of a pussy and terrible in the air but he did nothing wrong here.

I’ve played football, as a CB at that, at the highest youth level in Canada and semi-pro and so have both my brothers. And no, none of us agree he missed the ball because he was afraid. Shall I ask some pro CBs I know if they can change mid-flight to head a ball that has been re-directed a foot in front of them in a split second? Because the answer is no. It’s a ridiculous thing to complain about.

I just can't be arsed with the bloke, that's about it really. I never will be arsed about him, so I'm just trying not to get wound up by him anymore.

I just messaged Nemanja Vidic. He said he'd have taken a ball to the face in that instance. Do you want me to message Maldini?

Based on what exactly? We have one of the best defences in the league.
Having one of the best defences has nothing to do what I said.

He absolutely shits when pressed high, doesnt take risks and if taken, it always ends up with opposition, doesn't take responsibility when defending.

No, he wouldn’t have because that would mean he originally jumped with the intention of taking the ball straight to the face which he obviously wouldn’t have. Nor does Vidic have super human reaction times to change course midflight to read a redirection and adjust in under a millisecond.

It’s ironic you brought up posters playing football when it seems you can’t even grasp a simple concept of reaction timing.

I should have bought up the opticians because you need to watch the clip of their goal again.

In your desire to defend lindelof at all costs you're extremely bias. You're talking as if the ball changed direction completely however it was the tiniest of movements. If lindelof keeps his head up a little and wants to header it out then guaranteed it would still connect with his forehead.

Go and watch a replay without lindelof tinted specs and you'll realise just how much lindelof ducked. His head was almost inside his chest that's how much he tucked it into his shoulders.

Just average. Doesn’t really excel at anything and is just a placeholder for a better CB unfortunately.

Not sure how you can say it is baffling when we've had Tuanzebe, Jones and Bailly injured for large parts of the season but yes, I don't rate him much either.
I think we have always had one other CB fit at the time.. We kept it clean v Chelsea but with him back he looked like a right plank v Brügge and today he tried his best to give them a goal. He isn't good, not even close to being good, I would play anyone over him any day..

Started poorly under Watfords press, but after the first 15 minutes he was solid and had no problem with Deeney and they easily played their way out of Watford’s press. About the disallowed goal, there is no chance he has time to adjust his head after the ball is touched by Bruno. What is more worrying is that AWB totally lost his man again.

If Barca still want him for a fair fee this summer I think it would be wise to do it.

Swap him for somebody like Upamecano and it would be a night and day difference.

That is a shameful deflect in the Lindelof thread. Bruno was at fault, Bissaka is worrying. No, they aren't. Lindelof has proved himself not good enough now, seriously how can you not see that he isn't United quality. I can only explain the love for him by assuming some people hate watching defenders, so the fact he is invisible acts as some kind of confirmation that he must be doing something right. Anyone analysing his defensive aspects have to concede his weaknesses by this point. The good feeling comes from the team doing well and Lindelof is in the team, it's not actually him being amazing out there, making sure we're winning games. jeez  He is just there.

Bring us some good counter arguments to his weaknesses and we can have a debate about it, instead of deflecting the blame towards other players. Lindelof lack heading, physicality, on the ball ability, vision, accuracy, leadership-qualities, strength, anticipation, heart, temperament, decisiveness. I think he has decent reading of the game, positioning and a tidy tackling technique, and makes hard passes that's the most compliments I can honestly give him. The things he lacks make him an overall liability, despite the couple of important qualities I think he do have.

Lindelof and McGuire are both slow and let’s face it although McGuire was bought as a ball playing fullback his passing has not been any better than that of Smalling of late. Bailly/McGuire seems like a much better pairing than Lindelof/ McGuire and if Bailly manages to stay fit he should be our first choice CB ahead of Lindelof.

he needs to be benched as soon as possible..He unsettles the entire defense by his hesitations and constant "panicking"...Bench him asap..

Maguire. Not that hard. Not a fullback. His passing is way better than Smalling. Lindelof's passing isn't. Bailly is way more impressive than Lindelof if both are on form. Clearly has the bigger talent. I agree if Bailly could stay fit and find consistency he would be the better partner to Maguire, because as you said he is really slow.

Started poorly, but got into the game with time. Think Bailly and Jones might deserve a chance here.
Although their injury record puts them behind.
Not a big problem for us though the central defense position.

Shameful? Bruno touched the ball and AWB lost his man, what’s shameful in writing that? It was you who said Bruno was at fault, not me. And do you think AWB did a good job with his man? Would be interested in your opinion on that.
Only three teams with better defence record so far in the PL, another clean sheet, and I you think he has nothing to do with it. That he’s just there. Sorry that’s not how football works.

Again. Not an actual argument. Just deflection from everyones specific observations about him. I want something to look for so I can see his value, as you do. I want to be as happy about him as you are. How do you do it good sir?

Clearly has talent but is still regularly having moments of pure defensive madness. To say it's not our number one priority to upgrade him this Summer is true but it would be a very encouraging statement of ambition if we did anyway.

When do you think he will learn to time his jump for the ball? The amount of times he jumped and was not even close to the ball.

He has started every PL game he’s been available so clearly there are more than me who see his value. More than me who think good defending and not coincidence is behind one of the best defensive results in the league.

He has very good awareness, good positioning, is covering his area well, normally playing through press well, is more or less always at the right place when Maguire needs cover, etc.His heading is average by PL standards but that is compensated by Maguire who is well above average. His biggest weakness is lack of aggressiveness when needed imo.

He's just a run of the mill CB and that to me is the issue when we judge him for a big club. There's literally dime a dozen CBs at midtable clubs around Europe who could replicate his regulation performances.
Yeah I think that's about it really. He's not a bad defender really, just very average at most things without the positional versatility that made the likes of O'Shea so valuable.

Hes not aggressive, not particularly strong or quick, pretty average 1-on-1 and is weak in the air.

His ball-playing ability - which seems to be talked up as a real strength of his - is for me, vastly over-rated. Most of the time his passing is very very safe, and when he steps out of his comfort zone it often becomes erratic.

The real clincher for me is that he just doesn't seem sure of himself at all unless we're dominating the game, which leads to his uber passive 'take no chances make no mistakes' style of play. If he changed this and dialled the aggression right up I think he'd improve dramatically without talking about any technical aspects of his game.

I respect many of you think otherwise, all opinions at the end of the day ey. But I'd much prefer a suicidal Bailly in there in the hopes that he irons out his concentration / deathwish issues above a meek Lindelof, in the hope he finds some fight.

Or better yet, a dominating centre back who can stay fit for more than 3 games at a time. I'm sure there are plenty of options out there.

Thanks. I will try to look for these things and hopefully you'd contributed here to opening my eyes towards him again. I mean, I've seen some of that stuff like him covering but to me anyways what I've seen does not outweigh his flaws. I expect a CB to be a lot more dominant, aggressive and consistent in his defensive actions. I guess Lindelof is sort of consistent and reliable fitness wise too which is good, but I was expecting him to be a lot better on the ball, calmer in possession, and just generally better which would help his case when evaluating his overall value, despite his flaws. But his lack of presence is just ridiculous for a CB. Yoshida is more intimidating when facing forwards. This guy is a pushover and you better believe that it is to the detriment of our potential, compared to better CB's, despite our statistics proving we're doing ok with him in there.

He was never even considered anything special at Benfica according to some Benfica fans. It was actually surprising to many that a elite level club would be interested in signing him. Even Swedish fans at the time stated they were surprised United wanted to sign him and doubted he was good enough for such a big club. But apparently he was a ball playing CB and Mourinho's personal scouts were very impressed. And his ball playing ability was something we were gonna benefit from. I'm still waiting for this ball playing ability that we paid a very good sum for.

It's got to the stage now where there's a divide among the forum. Where there's people like me who feel he could be easily upgraded and another group who feel the need to defend him and even deflect blame onto other players to make their point in defending him. The quicker we get a top quality CB to partner Maguire the better IMO. Maguire is coming into his peak years and I feel we need to make best use of his peak by bringing in a suitable partner that will also benefit the team going forward.

I think it's a temperament thing as much as a technical one with him.

As soft as football has gotten, a top CB still needs that aggression in his game regardless of technical ability.

Not kicking lumps out of people aggression but generally doing all you can do to shut up shop, give the striker the game of his nightmares, that kind of thing. The love of defending, its what Vidic always embodied to me.

Lindelof doesn't come across as someone who loves defending, he seems outright afraid to do so.

Seemed to mistime his jump, Bruno barely touched it and then Lindelof pretty much ducks under the ball when he should be dominating that area but he's just not that type of defender. I'd rather both Axel and Bailly over him.

He'll never be an imposing, commanding centre back. He'll always be a little jittery and timid. For that reason I think we'll eventually replace him, either internally with one of Bailly/Tuanzebe or with a new transfer. He'll become a decent backup in a season or two, but no more than that.
