I think he played mostly midfield when coming through the ranks to the senior teams and started playing RB regularly for Bayern to stuff the hole Lahm had left, but I could be wrong.
You're probably right. I think he was RB with RB Leipzig before moving to Bayern... and like you said, RB to replace Lahm, which I remember happening.

New season, same outcome.

They can call it off and give Bayern Munchen trophy. No need playing games.

Yes Germany could struggle in the next years because the results in the last years U20-15 are really poor and only Wirtz looks a fantastic prospect.

Musiala will only play for Germany if he is the No.20 in pecking order....he will play soon for the U21 team like Bellingham (U17->U21 doesn't happen often).

Arrey-Mbi plays for Germany so that must be enough
People always underestimate the german youth. Kimmich was mostly a nobody before he turned 20 years. Lahm wasn't even a starter for the german youth NTs back in Germany's dark age, Müller was wasn't a "star" in the youth, Gnabry was highly rated but then took a nosedive, Sane wasn't even nominated by german youth NTs until he got playing time in the Bundesliga, Reus was never nominated for any german youth NTs except for just 2(!) u21 games and there are so, so many more examples (see also Klose, Schweinsteiger etc.).
In german football players like Kroos (very early on recognised as mega talent and then just went on to become a world class player) are the exception while most of our "stars" didn't look like exceptional youth players.
Having said that the current u18 and earlier age groups are again very strong and with Rhein there is even a CM talent I'd rate similar to the young Kroos, not to mention Moukoko (who is probably as close to a Mbappe level talent as you can get).
Still I'm sure there are a couple of players noone currently rates and will become great NT players.

Exactly. Not sure why Dortmund would even be concerned about keeping Sancho. Not like they re gonna win anything.
Not everything is just about winning a trophy. Dortmund didn't exactly cruise into the CL last season and they need a player like Sancho to make deeper runs in the cup competition. Besides that if Sancho wants to win things that not an argument to force a transfer to United.

It is amazing (and frightening) that Bayern simply continue how they ended last season. Granted, Schalke is horrible but it is remarkable nonetheless.
I was expecting a hangover after the treble (and 8 championships...) but they still look hungry.

I see the German league will be competitive this season. Unless there’s a situation where Bayern end up having a few games in hand, they will be too the entire season.

Exciting league.

The only thing they are concerned with is getting the best price (don’t blame them for that), he’s been up for sale all summer and everyone knows they won’t challenge for the league, which has been spectacularly confirmed today.

Some people laugh at Scottish football, Germany isint much different.

I agree and disagree with your ascertion.

I don't agree that Lahm and Schweinsteiger were unknowns at the age of 18-19. Lahm was already one of the best LB's in the BL by 20 after having a breakout season with Stuttgart, enough so that he started in Euro 2004 as a 20 year old, same for Schweinsteiger who was 19 then and already had 40 BL appearances. Both were regarded as top talents by that age. The reason why neither had significant U21 appearances was because they were already part of the senior team at 19-20.

Reus and Muller, I agree, were not highly regarded at the same age. Reus was considered a talent but not expected to be as good as he has become, it wasn't until he was 22-23 did he really show his true abilities.

If you look at the core of the World Cup winning squad, most of them having won the U-21 title in 2009, a lot of those players already had breakthrough seasons at the age of 19-20 and were stars of their sides. Khedira was a major part of the title winning Stuttgart team in 2007 (19 years old), Ozil had won the DFB Pokal in 2009 (20 years old), Kroos was one of the best performers in the 2009-10 season (19 years old), Hummels was a key player for Klopp's Dortmund at 20 years, Howedes for Schalke and Boateng for Hamburg.

You can't find a similar group of German players aged 19-20 in the BL right now who are playing such a major role for top 6 teams, Havertz is really the only one. There were plenty who have shown promise but stagnated a bit, Meier doesn't start anymore for Hertha, Geiger has suffered injury problems the last couple of seasons as well. Can't think of many more in the similar age group otherwise.

The part I can agree on is that the BL is the best place for youngsters to develop and therefore it can be that we will see players become better than their European counterparts due to getting a lot of playing time at ages 20 and above. That being said, I think the number of German youngsters at big clubs has fallen by quite a lot compared to the late 2000's. English and French talents seem to be on the radar of bigger clubs now, as evidenced by their signings.

Going to be a tight and competitive season in Germany.. That much is clear
Well, they are the best team in Europe, just won the treble and Schalke hasn’t won a game in 20 matches (or something like it). It is not really THAT shocking of a result.

If it wasn’t for the fact I’d be tying up money for 7 months, I’d put all my cash on Bayern winning the league. It’s a one horse race, and been that for a very long time.

Must be exciting watching football in Germany.

bayern is the only team in the world that consistently continues to play at 100% when they are comfortably ahead. The pressing that bayern played today in the 75 minute is more or less the same the team plays in the 5th minute. It just absolutely destroys any team that is giving up.

This is one of the reasons why with this Bayern team those absurd scorelines tend to happen regularly.
I'm not really sure if this approach is sustainable over this very condensed season, which will put a lot of strain on the players. I can imagine they will start to see out the games eventually. Or maybe sub more often when the game is in the bag.

Alaba was injured by the way.

Schalke is a huge club they should never ever be losing 8-0. No matter what.

Well yes and no, it's two leagues really in one. Bayern one league then the rest in another league.

You could say that subs would even help that argument - they’d come on with full energy and a point to prove.

Kimmich had a 97% pass completion rate. He misplaced 1 pass. Insane considering how many long through balls he played.

You aren't going to turn into a fan of us, are you ;)
Just kidding, fair post mate
I know it's hard to understand for a Bayern fan, but we normal supporters don't choose our club based on how successful it is at the moment :P

Jokes aside, I think it's dumb if you can't look past your dislike for certain clubs or players if they play great football. You end up missing out on too much essentially out of bitterness. Anyway, with Hoeneß and Rummenigge almost gone, I can see myself warming up to Bayern a bit. I guess that'll change once again when you guys start trying to sign Wirtz, though ;)

Yes, I'm not too bothered either. Also, many of our players are ~25 and have 6-8 years to go (Brandt, Werner, Sane, Gnabry, Kimmich, Süle, Tah, Ginter, Can, Ter Stegen). That already makes a strong back bone. And they'll definitely be complemented by Havertz, Wirtz and Moukoko. As a big football nation, I think you can deal with a few years of weaker age groups. When Gnabry and co. are about to retire, there'll be talents you realistically can't have heard of today. They could be ~10 years old, currently.

I'm more concerned of the league, to be honest.

Just seen the Sane goal for 7-0. Shalke had zero players in their own half when the break started! Absolutely bonkers when you’re 6-0 down.

Interesting to see Musiala score. There will be an international tug-of-war between England and Germany over him I’m sure.

The current Bayern team would do that in every league.
It was only 18 months ago where the scousers slapped you in Europe. You've improved since then, true, but it's largely the same group of players. You've just made everyone feel better at the club.

You'd definitely compete for the title over here but you'd not have it all your own way at all.

That would mean he only attempted 33 passes, that seems to low to me.

If you call Liverpool beating them 3-1 a 'slapping', then I really wonder what you would call what Bayern did to the 4th and 6th placed teams in the EPL last season.

How many did we score at Tottenham? Taking this game vs Schalke who are a legit candiate for relegation(and for filing bankruptcy) this year as "proof" for how boring and awful our league is just daft.

Reading Bluemoon is funny, City fans are all very bitter about Sane leaving, calling the Bundesliga a boring league. Some of you sarcastically moaning about Bayern's dominating their league seems very petty just like them. Not Bayern's fault that their rivals are not consistent and they are just a very well-run club. I'm envious of their success and would kill to have the kind of dominance we have in our league, reminds me of the good old days under SAF. 8-0 actually flattered Schalke, even at 7-0, Muller was still pressing. Could easily have been 12-0.

As far as top teams to that's pretty much a slapping. Chelsea and Spurs on the other hand aren't top teams and both finished 35 plus points behind the leaders last season.

Watching any team dominate a league is boring for the neutrals. We've seen the same commentary on Barcelona winning 7/9 La Ligas (although they actually had a real competitor) and Juventus winning Series A every season. It's natural for people to prefer a closer and more competitive league, it's simply more about exciting. Don't think anyone is saying it's Bayern 's fault but both Serie A and Bundesliga definitely need more spice added to the mix.

You are right. No indicator whatsoever that one big club beats another big club 8-0 in the season opener. Rather, I expect a sensational, unpredictable season and who knows which club will win it this or next season. It‘s so exciting that you do not know which 2 clubs will win it in the next 10 years apart from the club that will win 8 out of the next 10 titles.

Interesting match today between Dortmund and Gladbach. With Leipzeg losing Werner, I suspect these two would be the closest to challenging Bayern.

Gladbach have a young team whose players should only improve.

Since last season at least I'm at the point where I'm rooting for Dortmund/Leipzig to put up an actual challenge. We Bundesliga fans may get defensive about the quality of the league, but everyone must see that the current chasm between Bayern and the rest has already been detrimental. So far not to Bayern themselves, but at some point people will lose enough interest to make sponsors look for other teams to advertise their brands with, and that would be the point where domestic dominance will cost Bayern the ability to compete with the international top financially. If Dortmund were to hold on to Sancho for at least another season, that would be an important sign and a step in the right direction. They need to keep their top players long enough to compete for the league and in the CL.
