Almost time!

Unless Onana gets sent back to Manchester for some random reason.

Baffling signing. We let a talented young keeper in Kovar go to sit on Leverkusen’s bench as a No.2 despite looking good in pre season. We then sign this guy for £5m as a back up for Onana despite being a completely different profile of keeper and by the looks of it the manager has no intention of playing. Why the feck didn’t we just save ourselves the trouble and make Kovar our 2nd choice goalkeeper?? Just highlights the sheer incompetence from the decision makers at the club. Hopefully this will start to change with INEOS coming in.

It's really interesting to compare how different clubs treat their keepers. At United it's pretty clear, the first choice plays all the time possible and it looks like they want to prevent the number two from playing at all costs.

Meanwhile Leverkusen:
Hradecky got 18 games (17 Bundesliga and first cup round before Kovar was signed)
Kovar got 7 games (5 EL and 2 cup rounds)
Lomb got 1 game (the last EL match that didn't matter for Leverkusen was gifted to him as a "thank you" by Alonso)

If you see this comparison it's no wonder that Kovar wanted to leave.

It’s more of an ETH thing than a club policy. Our 2nd choice keepers used to keep plenty of game time previously in cup games but it seems to be the way of ETH that he wants his No.1 in the team at all times. I’m not sure if Kovar was told that and decided he wanted a move because he wouldn’t really get a chance here. It could also be Bayindir is that bad the manager simply refuses to play him, if that’s the case it would just be another example of our incompetence in the transfer market and a waste of more money.

I know Dutch is the best language and the most beautifull language that has ever been spoken.... but why would a Turkish man without any connections to the Netherlands want to learn Dutch?
He has to persuade ETH to give him a game somehow

Why not? Maybe it's for fun.

We haven't had a tall goalkeeper since Van Der Sar. Altay seems similar size. Just makes it much easier to pick things out of the air

Shows that you don't need to spend 50 million to get a semi decent keeper.

Didn't do much wrong, but there were a couple of ropey moments where maybe you can see why he's not first choice.

On very slim evidence, maybe being a decent backup for a big club is about his level.

Is this the guy that was supposed to make us miss Onana? I’d like to see him get a a run of games.

More of a stable presence than Onana, but he is ropey as hell with his feet. Against an elite pressing team, we would have conceded a chance from playing back to him.

He was better and more assured than any of Onana’s games for us (minus the Copenhagen pen save).

All we need from our keeper is to not make any stupid mistakes and to just be solid. Thought he did alright. Can't blame him for any of the goals and he didn't make me nervous.
