Sonic, Mario and Pikachu are definitely the three that instantly come to mind for me.

But feck Mario, Sonic all day long for me.
I have a sleeve tattoo of Sonic, TMNT, Sub Zero and just need a sprinkle of Pokemon to finish it off, so yes, I was a Megadrive kid

To be fair, I think you could say the same about Lara Croft and I wouldn't be surprised if more people knew her because of those Lucozade commercials back in the day than through the Tomb Raider games. She was marketed heavily in the 90s.

Also everyone knows Angelina Jolie played her in the movies and that in itself is a big thing because Jolie was a huge star/sex symbol/Brad Pitt's wife at the time.

Still, good points overall. Croft certainly transcends the gamer/non-gamer demographics.
I think the fact she was on Lucozade ads just proves how iconic she was/is. Was she the first video game character ever to feature on non-game ads?

Mario, Sonic, Pikachu top three - 1st Mario with Sonic and Pikachu battling it out for second but I think Sonic's popularity has waned.

It has to be Mario. Ask any granny and she will recognize Mario.

Pikachu is perhaps second.

Sonic... I think a large group doesn't know him.

Agree with this, those 3 are the the most iconic and known. Although, I would say Charizard is pretty high up there, I personally think he's more popular than Pika within the Pokémon community.

Personally Snake is my favourite video game character .

How people have Cloud above Sephiroth I have no idea. The list itself is clearly clickbait garbage. Two BG3 characters in the top twenty is crazy.

The title just says characters rather than video game characters.

Probably add in the following:

Homer Simpson
Micky Mouse
Scooby Doo
Harry Potter
Gandalf
Darth Vadar
Batman
Spider-Man

And a load more that’s slipped my mind
Video games only. The topic icon is set to games and the OP refers to a video game poll.

Although I'd guess many or all of those you list have been in games as well.

1. Mario
2. Sonic
3. Link
4. Pikachu
5. Pac-man
6. Master Chef
7. Princess Peach
8. Luigi
9. Yoshi
10. Snake

Having a hard time looking past this myself. Lara Croft wouldn't even get in the top 10 imo.

Looking at the full list though I'm assuming Zoomers were highly represented in the voting because there are a lot of recent games in there.
That list is all kinds of wrong. I’m surprised Steve from Minecraft isn’t higher up the list too given the worldwide popularity of the game.

I'd love to see that, can you post a pic? Tough call between Sub Zero and Scorpion and I was always a Raiden fan.

I have a half sleeve which includes Dragonair on my right arm. I wanna get other tats dedicated to Pokemon/some of my other favourite video game characters but I’m still indecisive.

Anyway I would have Lara Croft up there definitely - amongst some others. She’s especially important because (if I’m not mistaken) there were no major female protagonists in video games before her.

I mean, he completely lacks any personality and most people play with their own characters, so he's hardly iconic. Recognizable but not iconic.

I wouldn’t have characters from games like Final Fantasy anywhere near my list. Those are characters you actually have to play the game or be interested in that particular genre of video games (Skyrim, assassin’s creed, FF etc.) to know about whereas people who have never even touched a controller in their life know who Mario, Sonic, Lara Croft, Pikachu etc. are (or at least recognise them)

This is a great point actually, that I hadn’t considered. The correct answer is still Mario however.

That’s fair, I just thought on the basis of it being the best selling game ever. Sheer numbers, that’s all.

Probably only relevant to us here in the US of a certain age, but Bo Jackson (Super Tecmo Bowl) would be near the top of any list.

Mario, Sonic and maybe Pac-Man are the top three in the contemporary circles that take all demographics into account.
