Well it sounds a bit ambiguous, which Carrick himself seems to have picked up on:
The point is that Scholes is his contemporary and colleague. It would be one thing if it was Paddy Crerand he was being compared to, but this is kind of like singing, 'RVP, RVP, He's almost as good as Wayne Rooney". Yes it's a compliment, but it's vaguely back-handed, it's basically saying, 'He's playing so well that you could almost mistake him for that other, better player we've got'.
Tune's also dirge-like. We should leave that stuff to the Scousers.
I actually thought he sounded a bit thick when he said "I don't know if it is supposed to be tongue in cheek".
It's obviously tongue in cheek and it's obviously a massive compliment. We're talking about comparing him to a club icon, a genuine legend of the club.
If it was Tottenham singing "Woah Woah Woah Dembele, never believe it's not Sandro" then you'd raise an eye brow. But we're talking about comparing him to the best English midfielder of the last 20 years.
