Alex Telles - SIGNED for United

Makes sense to reject paying 18m if we can sign him in a pre agreement for no fee in January. I'd rather the club played more hardball like this instead of getting rinsed.

Ed baulking at £18m now
What do you want? Just pay up whatever seller asks? In 3 months Telles can sign a pre contract and leave for nothing. The seller is not at a position of strength. The club is trying not to get rinsed by any xyz seller in the market and this, imo, is the right thing to do.

Just wait and sign him in January. What’s the rush?
Some other clubs may whoop in and get that pre contract. When it comes to free transfer, it's a whole of different ball game. PSG, or master of free transfer like Juventus can come in out of nowhere.

We still want him for this season though, it depends how much you’re willing to pay for an extra year. If we got him for free he’d only join us next summer.

Porto apparently can't really afford his wages, and he's in his final year, plus he's pushing for the move. Quite surprised our initial 12m offer was rejected.

There may some other clubs interested in him :nervous:

Mykolenko can also play as left sided CB. Only 21 years old and already a Ukraine international.

100% agree. We see a lot of naive and desperate fans who are here saying we should pay anything to sign someone.

As you say, we hold all the cards. It’s a position that’s not a priority, and they have about a week to get any fee for him, otherwise he goes on a free on the summer.

A season can go quick. If he's still desperate to join us then he'll sign a pre-contract agreement in Jan. If not then there may be new targets made available.

This is good from United. Shaw can stay fit until January hopefully. Porto are being cheeky and Woodward has realised clubs have been laughing at him by adding 20 million on every player when United come calling.

We do not. In this age, the player going into his final year is the main decision maker. He may want to push the move to X club now, but 3 months later, it would be a whole different situation where pre contract is really a thing. Some other clubs can wait for another year if it means a free transfer.

With Porto we do. If the player wants to take his chances as a free agent, that’s fine - he’s not the right player for us. In any case, in this day and age we will have already agreed a contract with him and the only requirement is to agree a fee. Where we hold all the cards.

We will have no issues in walking away if they want too much money.

Telles's to leave is due to Porto can't afford his wage demand for contract extension. However, if the loss in selling him is too much, Porto can still risk by agreeing to his wage demand and keep him until they can find buyer too.

If he goes somewhere else, so be it. No reason to get ripped off out of fear.

Fair enough to be honest, that is mad money if we can get him on a free in three months. Porto can get fecked.
We wouldn’t get him until next season. Given he’s one of their best players I don’t think it’s mad money just a little over what we will end up paying.

And that’s fine. It’s a position in which he’s not a priority. It’s not a big or crucial signing. He’s not an essential player, and so we can afford to play hardball over the price, as if we don’t complete on it it’s not an issue.

When you look at negotiation, the price will be affected by who has the upper hand and Utd do.

The point being if upto 10mil difference benefits us to achieve our season objectives, then it's money well spent. Or next we waste a whole season with all these what if, to end up paying more next summer.

It's no time to make a statement on our stance, when we're not in the position of strength.

It’s exactly the time. In a world where there is incredible uncertainty, especially around revenues, now more than ever it’s a time to put a break on ridiculous spending.

No point over paying for a player that is not an urgent need. If we save 5 million by the end of it then that's a great deal. Else we sign him on a pre agreement in jan

Then it's now about personal opinion given the club is clearly looking at LB this summer. May not look for the absolute top LB, but a decent one at affordable price. Fail this after Requilon then the option is even more limited.

I will agree to disagree re negotiation. It's not a black and white world. Players extend contract late in contract. Kurzawa who led to Telles move to PSG break down is an example. As explained, Porto can reassess the situation and go to the other extreme to get the extension to negotiate with other club another day.

United are doing the right thing for a change and I would usually be critical of how we handle negotiations.

£12m is a generous offer under the circumstances. We are effectively saying to Porto that if they want to keep him for one final season... it will cost them £12m and his salary on top. A club that needs the money. It should just be a case of 'take it or leave it'.

If we keep playing hardball, we wont be rinsed, but our squad quality takes the hit. Ole will struggle.

Yes let's not have a alternative for Shaw this season or invest in other areas to not get rinsed. When we then finish outside the top 4 we will get charged even more as clubs will see us as even more desperate.

The not wanting to overpay angle is all just PR from the club to justify not investing.

And have Williams at left back this season when Shaw gets injured. Ended well last year...
I don't get why people don't understand that when it's free transfer/pre contract, it's very different. Telles may agree to not being a guaranteed starter now (since he has time to fight for the position), but next year when World Cup is getting closer, he would be more ambitious in his choice.
