There’s not a single club in the word that would offer us a transfer fee for Onana. I understand his mate ten Hag picking him every match, but Ruben needs to act on this and drop him while he can.
We applauded Amorim for coming in and shifting guys like Rashford and Antony out who didn’t meet his standards. There’s talk about Mainoo and Garnacho also being on the chopping block, but Onana remains the first name on the team sheet despite making our eyes bleed each week.
How many other keepers do we have in the payroll? Do we have an extra pair of gloves lying around the dressing room? Maguire or Højlund would've done better and saved that first goal. It’s just mind blowing that Ruben doesn’t have an alternative for this and isn’t willing to hold him to whatever performance standards or metrics he’s talked about extensively.
Three possible scenarios for next season and none of them involve the sale of Onana:
- Best case: We find a club to take him on loan and we end up paying his wages.
- Next best: We drop him to the bench and find/promote an actual goalkeeper to play the position
- Worst case: We don’t address the biggest weakness in our team and go into next season fielding the worst keeper in the league.
Either way we’re stuck with him on the books, but we’re not stuck with him in net. EtH is to blame for the signing and the wages, Onana can be blamed for his performances, but Ruben ultimately faces the blame for how he handles this.
