Costa for the longevity aspect, but they are both pretty great
Yeah, i'll be honest, for some reason Onana makes me very nervous but it's not based on much as i can't claim to have watched him week in week out. And his UCL stats last season obviously says otherwise. So my nervousness is based on very little, other than possibly "all these modern GK's" have a mistake or 2 in them due to the inherent risk of what they are asked to do and these errors are possible highlighted and emphasised more which sticks to memory.

Don't think there's anyone devoid of a mistake: even the great Neuer and currently Alisson etc.

I think Costa is a great keeper, but the WC really put me off his mentality. We've seen time and time again how the most talented keepers can shrink at OT. He did at the World Cup.

Gary Neville often speaks in clichés, but I think he's spot on in saying the United number 1 is the most scrutinised position in English football.

Onana has the confidence for it. He is exceptional on the ball, and is good all round. His weaknesses in parrying shots into danger and lacking clean handling will be magnified 10 fold here. But, I think he has the confidence to take it in his stride and improve.

Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Rumours from Inter supporters I know here are that they consider Onana gone, and the Italian press is generally presenting it in that way. The chat is about who will replace him, and whether Handanovic will be given another year to provide support for a new keeper.

Confidence in the keeper is absolutely key.

Also is being able to speak the language - wing able to communicate immediately is more key for a GK than any other position.

Onana looks very confident in himself.

I'm really interested to see what ETH is cooking up for our play style this season. Mount and Onana first team signings makes me think the tour matches could show us something completely different to last year.

I hope it happens and it's exciting to see Ten Hag's vision for the club coming more and more into focus

But nothing that happens this summer will mean a lot until a #9 is signed

I'm assuming the potential £100m outlay on Onana and Mount means that United are confident more funds will become available next month

This seems very close to done now and while I'm a big fan of ddg, it does not take a genius to see that the club has moved past him now.

Excited to see a proper ball playing gk at united for the first time. He'll make mistakes no doubt but do did ddg and that did not stop SAF from giving him the chances to prove himself. I expect the same with ddg and Onana.

Hope this gets wrapped up real soon

truly does feel like he/they thought Kane would be the big long out drama of a signing and then when that went all tits-up on first approach we've moved straight to the other positions.

Makes me wonder though, are we getting these deals done even before the tour because we are then going to spend then ENTIRE window trying to get Kane?

I'm a huge fan of this move. I thought Ten Hag would try to get rid of DDG very quickly but he was pragmatic and gave him a season. It's good he isn't going to let this issue last longer than that.

Im not sure it’ll be massively different. It was obvious ETH liked to play with advanced number 8s, high line and playing out from the back with posession domination.

He will no doubt persist with that but have better tools to do it with now.

Play out from the back to be press resistant, counter pressing off the ball, chaotic on the ball in attack.

I hope once Onana (or another GK) is done (or De Gea returns) that the focus is 100% on a striker. Ten Hag has been saying since like September that United need a striker, so he knows thats priority.

I'd happily then wait until the end of August for a striker, than say sign another midfielder and winger (as reported) and then rely on Martial for another 6 months at least. We won't progress much without a top striker

The other thing that crosses my mind is maybe a certain someone initialled MG is returning to the fold meaning no striker is needed yet, although that's surely unlikely

Would be very happy with this signing, finally a modern goalkeeper.

Sell some players after this and get a centre forward in.

The brass balls of mr “Onana is too expensive so they’ve moved on to another Dutch keeper”

nice to read articles about 'complete goalkeepers' above

I take it from those who have watched him extensively he is able to command his box? able to take crosses against big physical sides?

I haven't seen much of him if I am being honest, but the little I have of him, I wouldn't say coming for crosses was his strong point. I stand corrected if those that have seen him play a lot differ, but that was my observation of him in the small sample size I seen.

I still have hopes this MIGHT get done in time for him to go on the tour, however it's more likely he joins up with them later

I’m starting to think this transfer is more important to ETH than even a new striker. He clearly wants to play much higher up the pitch and dominate the ball. The signing of Mount as a goalscoring number 8/10 will be used to dominate the left side of the field with England’s Shaw, Mount and Rashford while the right side will be Bruno, Antony/Sancho and Dalot.

Andre Onana almost becomes a sweeper, he’s that good so he forces the team to push up 30/40 yards up the pitch, which means your Full backs or at least one becomes an auxiliary winger and you’ve always got 5 or 6 players in the opponents penalty box.
