He plays it too safe to be classified a playmaker in my opinion. He mostly passes the ball from left to right. And yes that’s a form of playmaking if you want to be pedantic, but he’s not the quarterback-style playmaker like Carrick or Scholes were before him or some other greats like Pirlo, Busquets etc.

He’s too risk averse with his passing, Pogba’s the one taking all the risks.
Very good observation. Any chance that it's Jose's demand?

Probably. At the very beginning, Matic was, somehow, like Fred. A very aggressive and vertical midfielder with a great 1 vs 1. Until he met José.

He has certainly improved after a year with Valencia. He is the one who sticks out on this tour and I hope he is part of the squad this season.

It's almost as if going out on loan to play some footy improves a player.

Some of you lot would have had him here playing against Bristol City in the fourth round of the Cup and 'improving in training with other world class players' (I love that one).

I'm not confident - I think Mourinho will find something he hates - but Pereira is like a new midfield signing that could do well for us this season provided he's given the opportunities.

Well, McTominay took his chance - the chance Pereira probably would have got, so who's to say if he wouldn't have had a good year at us last year if he had stayed?

Mind you, I think the loan was good for him.

He is technically very good and also he is very good dribbler. He is so much better playing in midfield than as winger. His quick feet means he can easily dribble past players and then play nice passes.

Btw some of his goals are very good.

Matic was converted into a no.6 at Benfica :)

Getting a lot of playing time pre-season, and doing pretty well. Do we think that Jose is planning on playing him much this season? Or just putting him in the shop window for a loan move?

Would like to think that he'll get the minutes, I'll be disappointed if he's loaned out again

If Jose prefers McTominay and Herrera over him then we should be worried

Done well today again. Cracking free-kick.

Think he needs another loan (ideally in the PL) if Mourinho isn't going to play him in at least 15-20 matches this season.

Why would he need to put him in the shop window for a loan move?

Pereira has said he’s staying.

I think he"ll stay and Scott will get a loan.
A season in Italy would do him the world of good

He's got starter quality. He's not going on loan for another year. Either he makes it here now or he leaves permanently.

Sadly can't see him getting much time outside cup games. Who does he bench? We barely rotate Matic and if we do it could be Fred in his place if not Fellaini even. Why I felt the suggestion that we needed yet another CM was pure muppetry

It's so refreshing to see some one with a forward passing mentality in front of the defence.

As much as I like the qualities that matic brings to the table Andreas just moves the ball faster and quicker than matic. Now seeing his dead ball ability , he should be the first name on the team sheet against Leicester.

I'd love for him to displace Matic. He's been great in midfield.

I am not sure. The previous comments on Pereira being "okay" by Jose aren't very encouraging. Seems like Jose is very unconvinced by him still. Let us see what he says after this match, the fans could put pressure on him to give Pereira more chances.

Instead of the hype over the likes of Rashford or McTominay, it is time to recognize that if there is one youth player who could become world class with us, it is Pereira. Will be really pissed if Jose doesn't give him chances and he disappears after preseason.

Were I Fred I'd be thinking 'hey weren't I bought to be the forward passer from midfield?' :p

On a serious note, Andreas has been awesome on the tour to date. Long may it continue.

Superb half and great free kick. Should be part of the main squad next season.

Why? Matic is our best midfielder, surely you would want them alongisde each other with pogba
I can see why - against teams that park the bus he would be very useful as he moves the ball much quicker and would gives us a quicker tempo.

What I am saying is I hope he can become as or even better than Matic eventually. Fred too. I think it would improve our football if they do.

He needs to start against Leicester along with Matic and ideally Fred or (if he's not ready) Herrera.

In the absence of Pogba who'll likely miss the first 2-3 games, there's no one in that midfield that can pass the ball and make play. Fellaini is also out bear in mind. If McTominay or Herrera start ahead of him at home against Leicester, someone needs to have a word with Mourinho.

He certainly moves the ball quicker and can hold the ball well with low gravity he can do a great spin and find the pass.

Surely we need some more movement and Matic turn for ages, shame he will be seen too short to be a direct replacement for mourinho but who knows, he looks actually very strong and likes to win the ball too, just get carras on him and elevate his positional game and we have a world class modern midfielder. If we want to move forward we should be playing more dynamic players to go up a level and get on ciry level.

If he is loaned again I think he would leave. I think to start 5-6 games this year and get a fair few sub appearances would be good. I do think he is a better player than all our other back up midfielders, just need opportunities off the bench at the very least to prove it

He should be fourth choice midfielder IMO so I expect him to get more playing time than McTominay did last season.

He's been great this pre season, but you know he'll be farmed off to Sunderland on loan as he's just not a Jose type player...which is a shame, as he's a special player, and he can take a dead ball...

Preseason has surely put him above Mctominay in the pecking order and it won't be long before he takes Herrera's spot at this rate.
