Ballon d’Or 2017 | Ronaldo wins

Apparently he told France football: c'est clair: il est devenu le meilleur football jamais vu. "Je suis le meilleur joueur de l'histoire, dans les bons comme dans les mauvais moments."

Meaning I'm the greatest player in history.

He isn't the greatest of all time. There are 5 kings in football and we can only say he is the discussion to be on the table with those footballers. The same applies to Lionel Messi.

He is one of the best of his generation and a great example for up and coming footballers on maximising your talent.

The 32-year-old claims he always knew he was different to his piers but it wasn’t until he arrived at Old Trafford that he became aware of his ability when he didn’t feel out of place alongside three of United’s most established stars. ‘Since I was 14, 15 or 16 years old I knew that I was different from other kids,’ Ronaldo said. ‘I did different things. ‘I realized that I was good at Manchester United, when I played with players like Giggs, Keane or Ferdinand. I had talent. ‘The English mentality is different and those people helped me a lot to be what I am now. ‘I have to thank my colleagues in Manchester.’

That boy Ronaldo, always a class act..!

piers

Good for Ronaldo that he's won another Balon Dor but he's a bit delusional with his I'm the greatest comments.

He's not the greatest ever but I am sure a certain fanboy of his is going to agree with his views here. :D

Ronaldo should have had the 07 award too. Kaka!...
Kaka was amazing that year. You cant argue with a Champions League win. And we had ran out of gas by April sadly. Our small squad was on its last legs and the injuries piled up. A bigger squad and we'd have beat AC Milan in the semis. We were a much better side. Would have beat Chelsea in the cup final as well.

Ronaldo as earned the right to be an arrogant *swear word* - Boxers go about calling themselves 'the best', Mayweather walks around with a TBE cap on.

I know people like modesty in football but there's nothing wrong with blowing your own trumpet if you can back-up it up and since Ronaldo as won back to back Ballon d'Or's (5 in total), influenced his club to back to back Champions Leagues/his country as European champions/winning more individual honors over any other player, he's earned the right to call himself 'the best' as he's proved himself to be 'the best' and he got voted 'the best' yesterday just as he was voted 'the best' last year so for me he is the best this generation.

Personally i think Ronaldo/Maradona/Messi/Ronaldo are all in a league of their own in terms of GOAT, it's personal preference who you prefer.

Great player. Delighted he played for us. But Messi is the greatest.

Almost all of us are delusional to a degree.

But it's surreal that no other player has won this award in a DECADE and the award count is split equally. 2 GOAT's and we are privileged to watch these two players in their prime.

Lol, absolutely love the bitterness towards CR7 because of the self confidence he has in his abilities to talk the talk and back it up with the walk.

It’s what keeps pushing him to higher and higher heights. It’s not delusion when he’s achieved what he’s achieved.

I still put Maradona on top as the greatest of all time. He married the magical football of Messi with the force of nature of Ronaldo and the impact on the biggest stage of all of Pele.

Part of me still thinks Messi is a better footballer than Ronaldo but then I also think the Argentine has two Ballon D'Ors (2010 & 2012) which should've gone to Iniesta.

If pushed I'd probably go:

Most gifted - Messi
Most effective - Ronaldo
Most successful - Pele

Best - Maradona

This! I love a cocky character as long as they can back it up.

People are crediting him with 9 group stage goals when it isn’t exactly hard to score against Apoel. Real put 9 goals past them in 2 games. If you dont include Apoel he has scored 7 goals in the league and CL combined. 11 if you include Apoel, as good as he once was he is past it now.

Funny when last season we have people trying to downplay his performances despite scoring all the winning crucial goals against Bayern, Altetico and Juventus in knockout stages. Now again we have people trying to discredit his group stage goals despite scoring in every other game against every opponents he face.

Some people are hard to please.

Regardless of what any of us think about Ronaldo or Messi being deserving of the award, the award is a popularity contest. Messi and Ronaldo could win nothing but score and assist 50 goals but if Muller or someone for example won the CL with Bayern and the world cup with Germany. Being top scorer in both tournaments, the award would still go to Ronaldo or Messi. If Muller scored and assisted 50 goals but Messi won the CL and World cup then Messi would win it.

Last season he wasn’t that good until the later stages of the CL and him and Portugal didn’t exactly light up the Euro. But regardless, the award is a popularity contest between him and Messi. See my post above this.

He's also joint 4th in the all-time international scorers list. And 2nd in real terms.....5 behind Puskas.

Portugal should play Chinese Taipei 2 or 3 times and let him catch Ali Daei at the top. FIFA should qualify Daei's scores the way the the IRB don't count Cyprus' 24 (or so) wins in a row as the rugby 'record'.

So it’s a popularity contest when Ronaldo wins it but isn’t when Messi does. Gotcha.

No I never said that so don’t try to twist it please. It is a popularity contest between the two of them, and no matter what, no one else will win it while them two are around, regardless of how good any one else has been.

He almost chose that goal against Dortmund as if he was saying 'I'm going to win my fifth Ballon D'or.

It was a thing of beauty - and shows why he is the best player in the world at this moment.

It is debatable who was the best player in the world last season, but Messi has been way better than Ronaldo this season.

See, there’ll always be people like you who’ll end up finding a way to twist things to fit a certain narrative - no matter what.

Last year he wasn’t that good until the later stages of the CL? Let’s say hypothetically he was good at the beginning stages of the CL but then cooled off towards the end; if that was the case, 100% sure you’d be saying “last season he was only good early on and then disappeared”. Case in point, you essentially said that in the same post about his performance with Portugal as he was critical for them early on and a huge reason as to why they got as far as they did before he got nicked up and slowed down. You see? There’ll always be people like you who’ll find a way to twist things to downplay such incredible feats.

...and just to expand a bit “wasn’t that good until the later stages of the CL”, talk about an understatement and again twisting and distorting of the truth LOL. Was arguably one of (if not thee) the greatest, clutch performance stretch of alltime to close out a CL. But sure, you can go ahead and label that “good” if it makes you feel any better

Sarcasm doesn’t hide the fact that Ronaldo has scored 2 league goals all season. Messi has more goals and more assists in all competitions and is the reason Barcelone are top of La Liga.

Bitterness and jealousy doesn’t hide the fact that Ronaldo has won the Ballon d’Or - not Messi, just so we’re all clear and on the same page.

:]

My intention was to try and point out that Ronaldo's goal (against Dortmund) was a glorious, wonderful thing and almost felt like a clairvoyant act given the timing and symmetry of the Ballon D'Or.

They are both great players and I have no preference for either of them, but think Ronaldo has the edge right now.

Hardly the most controversial opinion - but this is the most tedious debate in football and I've got no intention of furthering it.

What will be more interesting in the debate is when Messi wins the next Ballan Dor or 2. Ronaldo is declining, and in a couple of years he wont be that good. Messi however it won’t matter if he declines physically, he will just move further back and perform in a Pirlo/ Scholes role. In 10 years time we will see that Messi had a better end of his career. This will help define who was the greater player.

As good as Ronaldo is, Messi has more abilities in his locker to perform different roles when they get older.

Cristiano is a bit insecure, no? To be the only one in the world to claim you're the greatest player in history, it's probably a response to the fact that even his own son thinks Messi is better.

If Messi drops into midfield Barcelona will have a player there that runs half of what he'd need. Thinking all it takes to perform Pirlo's or Scholes' role is being good on the ball is insulting to them and it seems to be a common opinion. He could play midfield against the easy La Liga teams but those are matches Barça dominates easily already but I don't see Messi playing in midfield in tough league or Champions League games, he'd be a massive liability defensively.

I don't think he'll ever play deeper than he did last season, especially now that Neymar left.

You sound confident about the highlighted. What people are forgetting is Ronaldo is 2 and half years older than Messi and still winning Ballon d'Or's, will Messi be still winning Ballon d'or's at nearly 33? Highly doubt it.

I personally think Ronaldo could be amongst the world's elite until he's 36-37 and retire at 40, i don't think Messi could. Would be very suprised if Messi is still one of the best players in the world at 34 never mind 36-37 and he'll retire before 40.

Also Messi isn't going to do anything in a Barcelona team how they are now, they arn't even top5 in Europe.

Can I try to guess who these 5 kings are for you? Maybe...Maradona, Pele, Cruyff, Zidane and Ronaldo Nazario ?

You need personality to get away with claiming you're the greatest.

It also helps if you're actually the greatest, of course, but personality goes a long way.

Ali, you know.

The difference between Ali and Cristiano Ronaldo is that...no, forget it. Everybody knows the difference. If they don't, they should educate themselves.

exactly, Cristiano simply put lacks the swagger and charisma.
When Ali said it was actually fun, Cristiano meh, feck off.
Same with Pele, he also sounds bleh when he goes on about "Pele this", "Pele that" bollocks.
Although I will not lie but Ibra's self appraisal talk are entertaining, just like George Best's.
