Dumbest penalty ever. Yes, technically the defender has no business sticking his leg there and making no attempt on the ball but feck me, that's a gift alright.

Don't know about worst, certainly the most embarassing one though.

Don't worry, if they don't win it this year or next year they'll find a few reasons to create a few extra Copa Americas in the near future.
Still Messi is better than Ronaldo, Argentina won the Copa América 14 times six more than Brazil, so no, they are not creating Copas for Argentina.

So imprecise, we had hit the right formula up to the equaliser, now turned it into a scrap shooting and crossing like headless chicken.

Our midfield really misses Vecino.

Good stuff from Japan, good wake up call for us but on 4pts, +4GD and 6GS we should be through.

Don't really care about getting harder or easier teams in knockouts, although I'd rather avoid Colombia/Peru until crunch time.

Love how an over-the-hill Chile can smack Japaõ 4-0 and yet an almost full-strength Uruguay struggle to draw with one of the weakest Japaõ squads in recent times.

Not really playing great tbh, just a better team. Meant to post this earlier but wasted too long correcting Google.

This is from Tabarez' last press conference and quite adequate to assess Argentina's situation:

The "important things" of football

"Football has changed, it's true, but I try to rescue the essence, it's a collective sport, that does not change, beyond the physical and technical aspects there are others that have to do with the relationship between the participants, with their affective relationships. When I get criticized because they talk about possession football, that 'this is old' or 'this is modern', with all due respect but it seems a lot blah, blah, blah, they do not go to the important things, because they do not know them. It is the fault of those who think about football but can not access the internal reality of the teams. The strength comes from actions that have to do fundamentally with human values: respect, solidarity. They are intangible elements for many that the rival can not control. The only thing that the rival can do against us is to play better and win, but what we carry with us is 'attitude', the word that sums up all that, with that comes the conviction that those are the important things that can see us through.

I dreaded this game the moment we got the draw. The most obvious style mismatch and banana skin bang down the middle. Delighted to be sitting on 4pts.

They are better and today they created lots of situations. Argentina is whatever Messi can create.

That's what they have made of Argentina now. They were so busy getting the best out of Messi that they forgot that it's a team game and each player needs to have responsibilities.

It never appears to me that Argentina play as a team. It's always pass to Messi. Even he gets to take the penalties when there were better penalty takers on the pitch.

Yes, we did, but were very imprecise and lacked control and composure against the Japanese Olympic side.

And if Cavani's was a penalty that coming together with Gimenez in the second half also was. Should have been men against boys and at times couldn't tell which were the men.

Argentina won the Copa America 14 times... but how many has this generation won again? If there's one country in football desperate to win a trophy it's Argentina.

They are hosting without any reason for it next year despite being nowhere near their turn and having hosted it in 2011.
A tournament created with the reasoning they want to make it the same year as the Euros... despite the fact that waiting 5 years until 2024 would accomplish the exact same thing. I bet you anything that if Argentina don't win it this year or next year, they'll find a reason to create another before 2024. Maybe they'll give the hosting rights to Catalunya this time.

That over-the-hill Chile did not have a tournament last season. And players like Sanchez, Vidal etc. did not play so much this season or if they did were out of the international competitions early. And there weren't any qualifiers.

They aren't that much over the hill - the oldest of their keyplayers is Vidal with 32 - the other keyplayers that play with each other for years are 28 to 31. But until the last summer they had tournaments every summer for years...

Over the hill means that they are past their peak. You cannot tell me that this Chile is still at its peak and that their level is the same as 2015/2016 Chile.

Nah, it's about money, nothing to do with giving them more chances. And I'm probably most interested in them not catching up with us on our 15 Copas perch ;)

Nice goal too. Hopefully Sanchez will return to United with some most needed confidence or maybe this will increase his chances of getting a new club. He is far more dangerous playing centraly.

How has Sanchez been playing? A good performance here could help us in finding him a new club.
