So what is everyone’s opinion on canned crowd noise in televised matches during Corona?

Personally I am a big fan. Sky are currently doing it for the Bundesliga with great result.
I have the option of turning it on/off on my streaming service, and the difference is huge. It goes from a boring training session to an actual game.

I realize it removes authenticity and some were looking forward to hearing the players and coaches communicate.

It will likely also be applied to the Premier League when it starts up again.

Football is extremely weird without the roar of the crowd. As long as they can make it feel authentic I'm all for it. In other words, it would have to be turned off at the Etihad.

I don’t have that option so I can’t say for sure. What I can say is WWE Smackdown used to do this years ago when the show was taped and it was god awful. Listening to a crowd go wild for a Broadus Clay arm bar ruined fake crowd noise for me.

[Something catty about City]

Not for me. I'm aware there is a certain level of trickery with how they mic and output audio from normals games but I think it would be too much of a suspension of disbelief for me to hear roars when I can see empty seats.

That said I probably shouldn't knock it until I've tried it.

Crowd noise should be an option. Sex dolls in the stands should be a must.

Just get loads of people into the stadium to blow those vuvuzela horns.

Why not just create an app where all fans from around the world can turn their mic on and cheer for their team, hook that to stadium speakers too if the stadium supports it

You obviously don't do online gaming.

Any more than 5 people talking in a discord chat and it's bedlam.

That's without the N-bombs, monkey noises and homophobia that would be rampant given the anonymity. And lets face it, someones going to play porn down an open mic.

I think it works fine doing chants but fake crowd reactions to goals would be cringe.

Also the booing they were playing when Bayern had the ball yesterday didn’t work. The yellow wall chanting worked really well though.

Fox was doing it
That might have been why there were loud Bayern chants even though it was at Signal Iduna

I'm stupid, I thought Dortmund were pumping it in. I thought Fox did a pretty good job with it, I wasn't dreadfully bored like with the other BCD games. But it being an important and decently paced match might have helped.

Actually I'd find it really weird if the crowd didn't celebrate the goals, even if it's a fake one.

I wasn’t really being serious, but those are great points nonetheless.

I haven't experienced it myself yet but I'm assuming it will be MUCH better than the silent training sessions the games are right now.

I didn't realise fully just how much the crowd adds to the spectacle of a football match, without the crowd reaction it becomes sterile. Just awful.

Use the Googlebox model: choose 50 die-hard fans from each team and put a microphone in each of their living rooms, pop some reverb, delay and chorus on what comes out and blare it out through the stadium speakers.

Haven’t heard it yet but would probably be for it.

What I do find strange is that the TV microphones in the stadiums seem to be still on at their usual volume, meaning every kick of the ball is heard quite loudly. You’d think they’d turn it down a bit.

What makes goal reactions so great is that it is a reaction to that specific goal. Recorded fan reactions would be in reaction to another goal which is just weird. Would also be weird if there’s a last minute winner and the crowd don’t sound arsed or there’s a massive roar when a team gets a goal back in a 5-1 drubbing. It wouldn’t work. The sound of the bench celebrating at the moment at least are reacting to what’s happening in the live football match before them.

Actually worked really well at Dortmund yesterday, tricked my brain.
Same, it was great. Just focus on the game, emerge yourself into the experience without looking at the stands, and it feels 99% like the real deal in front of your TV.

I find it's ok with and without, to be honest. It's a different but interesting experience with no crowd noise, listening to the players and coaches communicating. With piped chanting my brain just naturally accepts it as normal. The only thing that didn't really work in the video above for me is the fake crowd reactions, but only really because whoever has his finger on the button is so slow off the mark so all the reactions are too late to sound natural. If they were timed properly I think my brain, again, would just accept it quite quickly.

I can’t decide what’s worse

I mean without, it has a meaningless friendly vibe

with, it just seems unreal when you look at the empty stands

Slippery slope towards no authenticy in football. No thanks. Let real be real. Next step is probably to fill out City's stadium with augmented reality crowd.

The daily life doings of real fans loses importance by doing such things, as humans in reality are no longer needed. The game gets less authentic / more plasticised imo.

For me football is meant to be raw and honest, about humans, not plasticised and polished and measured. It's the small things that add up. This and VAR changes our game towards robotism and less of a human game.

Better than nothing. I feel like they need to experiment more with fan interaction, displays in the crowd, that sort of thing also. Pyrotechnics for a goal? Drone fan robots with speakers and TVs for faces that you can inhabit for the duration of the game and the players can hear you shout?

Just to take the City joke further, as the crowd noises are not generic but specific to the teams that are playing, they would first need a full crowd in order to can them.

It doesn't change the experience for match going fans one iota.

It is being used in a very small sample of games until things can go back to how they were.
