The last 12 months?
Sorry - does one season suddenly mean nobody wants to join us? What about when we finished 5th under LVG unable to get a shot on target for 6 months and then signed Pogba, Zlatan and Mikhitarian? We are big payers, a massive historical club, play in the PL and now have our very own project - this woe is me stuff is silly.

Would love erikson here. He would push Bruno. Have competition in midfield would be great.

Well the plausible alternative to that is that maybe ETH is confident to convert one of our 10s into a false 9
Square pegs, round holes.

We had 6 priority positions needed filling this summer and we're trying to sign one in a position that wasn't on the list. It's a strange one to say the least.

If Ten Hag doesn't fancy Bruno, he won't play. Unless you're suggesting the board puts pressure on managers to play certain players?

If he said in his interview that he wanted rid of DDG, Bruno, Maguire etc. I don't think they'd have hired him. I think there's some middle ground here, and he'll no doubt have to at least try with the high earners that are considered (at least on board level) our key players. If he is allowed the freedom to discard whomever, great. I just don't think it's realistic.

I think we're obviously a less attractive proposition than we were 12 months ago after we'd finished 2nd and had CL football to offer, no? That's clear by all the reported reservations FDJ has had.

I don't think anyone suggested nobody wants to join us. We are still a top club who can pay big, we'll always be able to sign players, but at the moment we're not as attractive as we have been before.

Has there been a transfer window recently where we haven't brought in someone who's 30 or over ?

He’s suggesting we could struggle to attract Eriksen. And this isn’t a this season thing - we had people continually tell us last season players wouldn’t join us over Chelsea when we were after Varane and Sancho. People on this forum seem to think we’re Oldham.

And we could have won the CL last year and FDJ would have reservations - he doesn’t want to leave Barca.

Not being a confirme starter is different from discarding. And I remember it's been widely reported he has comokete control of his squad

Don't think so, he was responding to a poster who said if we want him, we get him. That's not necessarily true at all.

Quality control
Surely there's other players we could go for over a guy that died a year ago.

Crude comment but seriously we're in trouble if we're taking gambles like this over a long term strategy. Looks like Ralf was the last hope and he was put out.

We definitely need new owners who know how to put things right at the club. At this point I think any random 5 guys off the street could do a better job of scouting and recruitment than the people that are paid so much at our club can't do.

Disgraceful few years.

There's a lot of sense in this signing. Not only the fact that he is still top quality and on a free. Signing him not only gives us greater strength and depth in attacking midfield but also could result in the sale of DVB thus allowing us to invest that money elsewhere.

Christ alive, he wasn't the messiah.

Does anyone actually believe for a second we're going to sell VDB though? That would be logical since we don't need 3 attacking midfielders for 1 position. But we don't do logic at this club. So no, the signing doesn't make sense because there will be a player left sulking over getting no game time, collecting unneccessary wages. Next summer we'll be sat here saying either it was completely pointless signing Eriksen, or it was completely pointless keeping VDB.

I think we'd all be a lot better off if we stopped assuming that the new management team are going to make all the same mistakes as the last one.

Bit of a crazy comment.

This is only appealing because its a free transfer. We need players with legs, don't really see the use in Eriksen especially if we plan to use him in a wide playmaker role. This team is crying out for pace and intensity in the press.

That modric fella at Madrid gets by alright without legs and intense pressing... I'd say Eriksen might be fine.

It's a discussion forum, we express opinions and make predictions. I hope I'm wrong but I do not envision a scenario where we can give enough games to Bruno, Eriksen and VDB simultaneously.

Maybe we'll end up playing 1 of them out of position to try fix the mess we've got ourselves into by stockpiling players unneccsarily, which again will speak to poor squad planning that we're used to.

We need depth

The Glazers have us on a tight budget

Ronaldo had questionable service last year

our set pieces arent great

Our final ball can be lacking in attacking midfield

this guy has great ability

makes sense to me for a team likely to blow budget on 2 CMs, A RW and a RB hopefully

honestly think Ronaldo would relish playing with him and Id expect far more headed opportunities

Do we play him behind Ronaldo and shift Bruno to a wide right forward?

Why? I swear what's with this club's fans obsession with doing anything to fit in our "star" players into the lineup. We've seen it for years with Martial, Rashford, Lingard, Pogba, and now we're seeing it with Bruno and Sancho. I've seen people suggest Sancho should play as a no. 10 if he continues to struggle to play as a winger. Now it's Bruno as a wide attacker or false 9 because his issues with possession can no longer be ignored if he continues to be our main attacking midfielder. Guys, Bruno can't dribble and carry the ball at the level of a wide forward or a false 9. If Eriksen comes (which I doubt) and he manages to displace Bruno, the solution won't be to try our best to shoehorn Bruno into the starting XI; it'll be to just bench him and continue to play actual wingers in wide areas of the pitch. If we want a striker, we get a striker and play him there. Not attempt to plug the whole by playing Bruno as a false 9. If we want a right winger we get one and play them there, not play Bruno, Eriksen, Sanchez, Martial, or whatever there. After almost 10 years of this madness it's time we stop, it's time we start playing players in roles they excel in.

Well Eriksen is no Modric. His story is a remarkable one and its the romanticism of it that is blinding people.

Eriksen was flopping at Inter and clearly passed his best. Granted he's done well for Brentford and Denmark but he's nowhere near the Eriksen of old. He won't necessarily be a bad thing as a squad/rotational player but he's not the profile of player we need.

He was flopping at inter because Conte deployed him as a CDM almost, this guy still has it he's 30 and still have time to give.

He’s definitely what we need if it is with the view of being a squad option.

Yes I agree it’s not realistic however it is exactly what’s needed. I’m not advocating getting rid of everyone and not anyone in particular either. But I do think ETH should be allowed to cut any player or players he wants to. It won’t happen because the board will interfere.

We can only hope ETH makes a decent fist of it regardless or walks out in a huff (which would also be a good result).

Our team is crying out for pace and goals. We lost Cavani and Martial has turned into a basket case. Ronaldo was our only steady source of supply of goals last season. Bruno and Rashford could recover but we need goals. Out wide we need pacey players, Rashford and Elanga are the only fast players we have. Elanga should be nowhere near this team but his pace is what got him a place.

Between Bruno and Sancho we are sorted for creativity especially if we add Antony. Not sure where Eriksen comes into all of this unless we sell Donny.

Ehh. If he went to spurs I wouldn’t be too arsed.

If he came here I'd be mildly keen on it, but a bit worried how we'd fit him into the lineup, having seen us utterly fail to ever get it right with Mata.
But if he went elsewhere I wouldn't worry a jot.

Definitely.
The bits that worked when Ole had us into 2nd, was the counter attack pace.

Rashford off the boil, Sancho despite people adamant he has top pace looks fairly average pace, Greenwood had developed some speed, but less said about him, even Martial had some liveliness at times, which disappeared.

Definitely need more pace and thrust in there.

I don’t see why Mata even needs replacing. He hasn’t played for about 3 years.

If he went elsewhere I wouldn’t be saying we definitely need another CAM, but if he’s free...
