Class of 92

Good, but not great. A politician, a United legend, a non-United legend and a musician and a movie maker for extra comments. Surprising lack of Fergie-time (apart from one small video) and contemporary footballers. Avoids all controvorsies.

I liked the part of Fergie catching Giggs/Sharpe at house party and Phil's double stepover antics. :nervous:
 
Fair assessment from AFC, tho I unequivocally enjoyed it. I wasn't expecting anything contentious or revealing, just some nostalgia and a bit of insight into their personalities, which was what I got.

Finally got round to watching last night - pleasantly surprised. Was partly expecting a pure "seen-it-all-before" nostalgia trip, but there was a lot of interesting / funny / insightful stuff from the six of them that hasn't been seen elsewhere. Phil's step-overs / "Phil will tear you apart" being a great example.

The talking heads were a bit unescesary, but they always are on these things, and they weren't as bad a selection as they could have been. Always like seeing Mani talking about United!

I LOVED IT! It was a very refreshing film and their insights were really interesting. It's been said a lot but Raphael Burke's point about being talented and not having the sacrifice to get to the top level is still relevant.

Thought the banter was great too. Butt was such a mischievous character
 
Just finished watching this, got me quite emotional at times.
 
Just watched it…very good….although technically Phil Neville never played in the 1992 team as most know.

Interesting to see parallels between our youth teams of years gone by…

1948 - Carey, Aston, Cockburn, Anderson, Morris, Pearson, Mitten
1956 - Foulkes, Byrne, Colman, Jones, Blanchflower, Edwards, Whelan, Doherty, Whitefoot, McGuinness, Pegg, Scanlon, Viollet
1963 - Gaskell, Nicholson, Giles, Stiles, Brennan, Charlton
1968 - Best, Kidd, Fitzpatrick, Noble, Burns, Rimmer, Sadler, Aston, Sartori
1980 - Whiteside, Blackmore, Duxbury, Hughes, Hogg, Garton, McGarvey

Some good teams in there with lots of internationals and thousands of appearances….

We've been good at developing groups of players in 'crops' and while I agree to replicate it again in the modern game may be difficult, if any one team could do it again it would be us.

Literally just finished watching the film; loved it. What an achievement it would be to win a treble in any manner but for 6 young lads growing up together and reaching that pinnacle is just incredible. We'll never see it again.

Premiere tomorrow night in Sydney. A lot of us fans down here have seen it but it's finally in a cinema tomorrow and our on DVD next week.

No idea why they seem to be having a red carpet thing. Maybe Bosnich will be there to say a few words.

I think most us were mystified about that comment, perhaps he was confusing Butt with another player - his world cup performances were not particularly special.

While not being a stand out, he was very good. Showed that he was more than just a tough tackler and he could match it football wise with the best in the world.

You are entitled to your opinion. I think Butt was consistent and reliable but not one of the worlds best at that point or any other time to be honest, I would have to wear an extremely heavily rose tinted glasses to say something like that!

butt was a great servant for us. even when we got scholes and keane back then as the official first choice pairing, whenever sir alex wanted to rest one of them, scholes especially, then butt will come in and nobody really noticed the difference.

if we have a 26 year old nicky butt in our team at this moment then we would need just another CM to buy this summer rather than 2 that we desperately needed.

They would have to be so rose tinted as to be actually opaque. You would have to be actually wearing a pair of spectacles that had the glass removed and replaced with rose petals.

It turns out the bloke was just taking the pee anyway and wasn't being serious about him being one of the worlds best.

However as ricky said, we could really use him now. Not the most dynamic of players but did a good job.

You need to go back and take another look. Butt was absolutely a stand out in the WC. Just for those few games he was assuredly one of the top midfielders in the world. Pity it didn't carry over into his United career. (It's also a pity that Brazil screwed up in their group - England v Brazil should have been the final - clearly the best two teams.)
 
Can't wait for the 25th anniversary celebrations in three years time!

I don't need to go back and take a look, I am one defending him and praising his tournament. I just mean stand out in regards to it wasn't a flashy, 5 goal tournament.
 
For any Aussies, it's on SBS tonight at 8.30 and is released on DVD during the week.
 
I hate to spoil the fun but Cantona was the star of that film. King Eric was just sitting there talking, oozing with charisma and swagger. Giggs killed me when he started talking like Beckham.
 
They're starting to annoy me a bit.

Great players obviously but I do wish they'd shut up at times, even Paul Scholes is talking to Paddy Power now. Strange how (except Beckham) they all had very little presence in the media before Fergie retired.

Just watched it in Oz. A good documentary, captures the era as best as it could given the limited amount of time for that.

I disagree about Phil Neville not coming across well - he was articulate and genuine. He doesn't come across as too heavy on prayer - if he is a practising Christian he was low-key about it. I think his stepover bits were not entirely intended to be serious.

For me the highlights (apart from Ryan) were listening to Becks reminisce, listening to Nicky, and hearing King Eric.

About Becks, we've seen the celebrity and product for so long that it has been a bit difficult to remember the Man United fanatic he was as a boy and lad entering the club. So it was fantastic to see that again and be reminded of his passion for football including the mention of his granddad as a Spurs fan who preferred United to win the honours rather than Arsenal.

Eric Cantona brought tears to my eyes. It's been a long, lonely time without him. We were reminded just how good Nicky was and yes, he was a dynamo in the World Cup. So glad he is still at United.

Those were different times. We were so lucky with the Class of 92 in a number of different ways.

One of them was the fact that they were under no illusion they were anything but the juniors and had to earn their place, wait their chance and respect the club and its seniors.

They were also paid relative peanuts compared to what young players earn now and the societal shift towards sport as celebrity and money in professional sport, even for relatively mediocre players, that was unimaginable in previous eras, has taken professional football to a much different place.

The players have more power than they have had at any time in the history of football and knowing that does not tend to foster attitudes such as those that even a megatalent such as Ryan had when he was breaking into the senior team.
The increase in foreign players has also meant less opportunities for young, homegrown talent.

I don't think we will have a new generation at United like the previous young guns you mentioned.

I don't think luck comes into it really…we have been 'lucky' so many times with groups of players that it becomes formulaic.

You make good points about changing dynamics of motivation and that would definitely make it more difficult to replicate. We also now develop youth players from outside the UK so would assume that would even itself out. Januzaj, Cleverley, Evans, Welbeck have all become regulars over last few seasons. Wilson is an example of 'if you are good enough' although he still has a long way to go.

Time will tell if it happens again…but like I said…IF it does it will be at United.

Same here. Watched it twice while on a cross country flight today. Really did bring tears to my eyes. How lucky those lads were, and us to have watched them.
A must see for all Utd fans that maybe didn't experience those times.
 
I'm a bit late as well, but nevertheless, thoroughly enjoyed it. No controversy, but I don't need it in pieces like this, a lot of funny anecdotes, some not so funny (journos harassing Beckham's grandfather? jeez). Nostalgia played a big part in my enjoyment I guess, but definitely not bothered by that.

Could live with less Blair of course. And that more to him being the most uninteresting part in it.
 
Rumours slowly emerging that United want to distance themselves from the brand surrounding the class of 92. Scholes comments last season probably hasn't helped things. Neville apparently wanted some United reserves to play last night but wasn't allowed.

Hope United fans do not follow these kind of rumours when most ABU want to make it a big thing. Fact of matter is, Class of 92 is a phenomena and it already goes down in history as a amazing, and a bit of nostalgic here and there is fine. The club does not need to be overly supportive of their current endeavour as far as club business is concerned. To make it a big thing about the club is distancing themselves appears to be ludicrous. The brand is like the brand of Cantona and Ronaldo etc. How can you distance from these brands when they are already part of you (United history)?! Leave it if I were you.
 
I agree, I don't think the club has any need to show themselves to be particularly backing of them and what they do.
