Dalot (and AWB) are good enough for now, we should improve many other areas of the squad before looking at the right back position. They're solid defenders both, one with his height, the other with speed and crazy tackling. Both are pretty shit at crossing the ball but that's fine. Our right side will never be our strong side.

Good. He’s versatile, more suited to the football Ten Hag is pursuing, and has more scope to improve than Wan-Bissaka, who won’t last the course here. Some folk won’t like that reality, but here it is.

I like him, think he's a good player and can play both full back roles well.

Also plays with tonnes of heart.

Good to see the club getting some bits tied up early........... Hopefully we hear something about transfers not too long after the final.

AWB has definitely become the preferred starting choice over the last few weeks. What does the new contract for Dalot mean for next season? Do we retain the 2 rbs and let them battle it out for the first team.
Or do we sell AWB and buy a better rb who would ideally be the first choice with Dalot as a back-up?
I think rb is not a position of immediate concern but can definitely be improved upon. Neither Dalot or AWB are without major deficiencies.

I'm not sure what people are moaning about. Before the World Cup and his injury he was looking world class and formed a great back 4 with Varane and Licha, if he can hit those heights again he'd be a mainstay at RB, it's like you all got memory loss or something and are only seeing some of his performances in the latter half of the season, of which not a lot of squad members cover themselves in glory
Who's moaning? There isn't a single moaning post in this thread up to now. :houllier:

Too right. Every player loses form when they’re near the end of their contract as they feel unsettled. He will displace AWB again in no time.

We can only sign so many players in the short term so I’d say both fullback positions are fairly low priority in the scheme of things

Good news. He's earned it and showed he can have a place here, and to be fair 30k for a starting (ish) right back for the 3rd placed club in the PL is a bit ridiculous.

Our new John OShea. Reliable backup option and flexible with position to play across the defence. With the rumoured wages, won't mind having him as a squad member.

Good contract extension with reasonable wages. None of those 300k a week nonsense.

Not fussed about the news. If this means AWB is going, then I think it's a bad decision to choose Dalot out of the two as the better option.

Been mostly decent, still young, squad player wages.

Looks like a very good move for us.

Well done to him for securing a new contract with the club. He had a good first half to the season but unfortunately struggled to maintain it after the break. However, he provides a good option in rotation with AWB at this point in the development of the team so this is potentially sensible by club.

His wages aren’t too high so there is the potential to sell him at a later date if there is a right back that we really want.

It's overall good news, but he is a bit of an enigma of a footballer. Somehow the whole is less than the sum of the parts, if that makes sense?

Great news. I think he is very good squad player. Can play on either side of the flank.

Salary is not too outrageous and he's useful on both wings.

Not sure if he'll ever be starter material but he feels like one of those that can be sold to a decent club fairly quickly, so overall I support this

I'm not convinced by him. I'm worried that his pre-WC form was a purple patch. He's been nowhere near that level since he returned from injury. His salary isn't overly inflated, so if it doesn't work out, he should be sellable at least.

His loss of form post WC is fairly exaggerated, got injured and took a bit of time getting back, had a couple of stinkers but generally played ok after that, including the occasions he had to fill in at LB. The whole team peaked at the LC final and dropped off a level after that, he’s not an isolated case.

I expect him to rediscover his first half season form after a summer of rest and pre season training. If we don’t get a specialist attacker RB like Dumfries or Frimpong then he would be our best hope to have an attacking outlet at RB next season.

Think he's had an underrated season after perhaps not being at his best at the start. I can understand some of the frustration with him at times, he has the ability to do better going forward and sometimes he will put in some poor crosses. However on the balance of things, our rightbacks do a lot of work for the team. Their ball winning stats are higher than our rivals and most of their teammates. Our rightbacks need to defend and Dalot along with AWB both have a great work ethic for that. Dalot didnt when he first arrived, but thats been the major change for him. He looks like he likes defending and statistically he wins the ball a lot showing his efforts.

For me its an obvious and good choice to secure his future so I'm happy enough

I don’t have a huge problem with this (there are much bigger issues to worry about), but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if in a couple of years he’s included in a list of the ‘dead wood’ we need to ship out.

The truth is he’s been bang average or worse for most of his time here, including the latter half of this season. AWB isn’t perfect, but at least he’s genuinely world class at one thing. I would have let Dalot go, kept AWB and brought in someone better for him to compete with. But like I said, not the biggest problem the club is facing at the moment.

Granted that they are not of similar quality, what you describe is what young Alba, Marcelo or even Maxwell were. It took them a bit of time to become as well rounded as they were in their late twenties, early 30s.

Not sure how I feel about this. He was good for a couple of months before the World Cup but his form absolutely tanked afterwards. I’ve also never really thought “wow this guy is great”. Seems with this and AWBs good form that we won’t be looking at a RB this window.
I'm completely with you on this. His early season form gave me a lot of hope, coupled with AWB being out of favour it was a real positive. Since his injury though he's looked more like the sort of player he was pre ETH.

I'm hoping it means we leave RB for another season and invest in more needing areas such as CF, GK, CM and a replacement for Maguire.

Posters who have been here a while will know that I was a Dalot fanboy back when he wasn’t cool. I’m happy for him, but I’m not happy about what this means for AWB.

We can talk about “imposing our game on opponents” all we want; they’re still going to have strengths, usually consisting of a tricky left winger.

It’s not blasphemy to have a player in the squad who is extremely suited to countering that and who has improved leaps and bounds in general.

I just think this idea of “if plan A doesn’t work, do plan A better” is nonsense to be honest.

If AWB stays and we don’t go for Frimpong, then ignore all of the above.
