Welbeck is a better footballer than Hernandez. Hernandez is a better finisher than Welbeck.
I would agree with this.

Hernandez will get you the goals at important moments because of being a good finisher and because of his knack of being at the right place at the right time but Welbeck will offer a lot more than just score goals.

nice one - I look forward to Pogue response :D
If he versatile it makes him a better all round footballer. Given that JOS has stepped into both fullback positions, centre back and midfield from a pure footballing point of view he is undoubtedly a better footballer.

What he of course isn't which Vidic is, is world class in one specialist position

CoaC:

Comes on Raees, you're a good poster, but the above? surely you can't see where CoaC's is coming from with that?
I can see where he's coming from, I don't necessarily have to agree with him.. based on what he's seen, he probably thinks its a valid opinion and unless Hernandez doesn't contribute more out of the box, than CoaC will feel more justified in retaining that assertion.

The only reason why I'd hesitate to agree is that I see a spark in Hernandez and I've seen glimpses of him having talent extending beyond that of just being a lethal finisher.. i.e. through ball v Chelsea I think it was in the community shield and the cross-field pass I saw during pre-season. Add to that the audacity he showed with his 'back-header', the sharp dribbling movement he almost pulled off against Liverpool, the tackle on Lennon v Spurs and I genuinely believe he has more to offer than just a finisher. CoaC probably feels these moments are few and far between and that they are exceptions rather than a sign of what is to come. Fair enough I say, lets just wait and see.

Hernandez and Welbeck are both still developing, the main thing is they are BOTH ours and the future partners for Rooney.

That's far too logical for some on this forum.Don't you get it, you have to further the claims of one and vilify another on here.;)

By the logic of some in this thread, Clayton Blackmore was the best footballer we've ever had at this club.

Not that I necessarily disagree with the specific comparison of welbeck and Hernandez - I really really rate welbeck. But to claim that he's inherently a better footballer simply because of his versatility is clearly stupid

I think there needs to be a clear definition on the term better footballer. I think what people mean by this is a combination of technique, game understanding and versatility. Under this definition saying saying John O'Shea is a better footballer than Vidic would not be wide of the mark, while of course you would chose to have Vidic in you're team every week.

Its like when someone says Paul Collingwood is a 'good cricketer'. He's bowls a bit, bats well fields superbly but this is not to say he's better than Tendulkar.

Hernandez's first touch isnt great. Its not often you seem him play a first time pass, and the ball tends to bounce away from him around a yard or 2 when he takes a touch.

Welbeck's touch on the other hand is excellent. Not much else to add.

Hernandez's touch will improve though, regardless of what Scholesy tells us, although its never going to be as good as Berbatov's, Giggs', Ronaldo's etc.

I think I read somewhere that he could be out for another month or so. Didn't think much of it at that time, but it could be true.
It isnt exactly that serious is it.. If he is out for a while, might as well have a look if his knee is fine.. If they just have a look and dont operate on it, the recovery time shouldn't be that long

Scans have not revealed any problems which have further led to the confusion, prompting Steve Bruce to order the surgery.
Some of it may be.

Since when has the manager of another team been allowed to "order" surgery on one of our players! As far as I know all of our loan players are still under the direction of our club's medics and manager. Bruce surely can't do anything without our agreement.

That's just lazy journalism as opposed to anything to get worked up or worried about.

Nothing unusual about a growling lad picking up injuries. I'm not concerned.

Welbeck out for up to two months

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce has been dealt a fresh blow by the news that strike Danny Welbeck could be out for up to eight weeks after undergoing knee surgery.

Welbeck, who is on loan from Manchester United for the season, underwent an operation on Wednesday to repair a torn knee cartilage a day after former team-mate Darren Bent had sealed his big-money switch to Aston Villa.

That leaves Bruce with only one fit senior striker - record signing Asamoah Gyan - for Saturday's Barclays Premier League trip to Blackpool.

Bruce said: "Danny was operated on yesterday and it was confirmed he had a torn cartilage and he will be [out for] six to eight weeks."

Just spoken to a Sunderland fan who says he thinks he's by far their best player, much better than Gyan and Bent so that's encouraging. Shame about the injury, his knee's do seem to have given him trouble, hopefully this will sort it out.

This is actually good news. He'd been playing with a chronic knee injury for a while and they only decided to do an arthroscopy to see what was going on because he picked up a ham-string tear and would be out of action for a few weeks.

If he hadn't done his ham-string he probably would have done even more damage to his cartilage, which would be bad news in the long term.

You'll know more than me Pogue, it seemed odd that the knee was swelling up without Welbeck feeling any pain. Can cartiledge problems do that or is this something else?
