No, but Rodri stats back in his days in La Liga has also been impressive though, even when he isn't benefiting from City superior possession football.

Rodri
22-23 for City (percentile vs CM)
Pass attempt: 99
Pass completion: 99
Tackles: 50
Interception: 52

Rodri
18-19 for Atletico (percentile vs CM)
Pass attempt: 87
Pass completion: 97
Tackles: 97
Interception: 78

Rice
22-23 for West Ham (percentile vs CM)
Pass attempt: 78
Pass completion: 85
Tackles: 52
Interception: 93

Look Rice is probably one of the top DM in PL, but apparently he is nowhere as good as Rodri in most measurable stats out there. Strictly speaking, Rice has been consistently better in interception though, but that's about it.
It seems to me that as a DM the 2 most important stats out of all the above are tackles and interceptions AND Rice has better numbers than Rodri for last season (miles better when it comes to interceptions) which is a great way to get your team on the front foot. Yes, I know Rice has more to do defensively because West Ham have far less possession but because West Ham don’t press much opponents have more time and space to pick a pass.

City always have men available to pass to and dominate possession so no surprise Rodri has better stats there.

I am in a minority here but I think Rice is already up there or thereabouts with Rodri who has 3 years on him and has had the benefit of playing under Pep for a number of seasons.

I think he would improve us massively

Oh he definitely would improve us,however feel we need more of a Caicedo/Barella type

Depends who you are playing for, if your team is dominating the ball often you will have less tackles and interceptions

IF this is true then it is amazing news. Arteta seems to really be able to sell his vision.

On a side note - why would City need Rice anyway? Rodri is probably the best midfielder on the entire planet, and it's not as if Rice would be anything close to a like-for-like replacement for Gundogan.

Fair play if it's true but don't expect a Rice snubbed City headline because media love them too much to write it

He promised him the captaincy. Simple as that.

You don't join a worse team (on probably less money) because you've been promised the captaincy. Especially when the current captain is their reigning POTY and is an excellent leader, and is younger.

1) I don't believe it
2) I don't believe it's that simple

And 3) I don't want to believe it because it implies that Odegaard may leave soon

Never thought of it that way but fiar enough  could even explain the Kai deal somewhat.

You won't sell Odegaard

Remember he's coming from West Ham, the step up to Arsenal is massive as it is. He's hardly slumming it and gets to stay in London. Straight into the first XI and they will be challenging for the league and will be in the CL. Not to mention Arteta has clearly put a lot of ground work with him already.

True.

I think maybe not uprooting his family may play a part too. Though I don't know how much of an inconvenience it is for a multi-millionaire to move between two Cities in England, which isn't exactly the largest land mass.

More of a step down since west ham have actually won something in Europe.

Im sure rice will be fine. He is joining a whole bunch of other players who have never played in the CL before either.

Nah, Odegaard remains our captain. No doubt about that.

Arteta sold him the project and his specific role in the project. In Rice's mind its good enough to have him turn away from Bayern and now City.

That's the simple part.

Yeah that's definitely in your favour

It's exhausting though. When my mum was travelling back and forth from Manchester and London every week, when my Nana and Grandad weren't well, it just takes it's toll after a while. She was retired at the time too.

Are mods letting children through the newbies now?

With Mount taking a stall, if we are at all interested in Rice then the offers would likely come now. Buying Rice & getting Mount on a free seems logical than spending important money a season earlier.

Behave, it's a tin pot trophy. It's great for West Ham, but it's a nothing trophy for someone looking to challenge for the league.

Why would an established and international player want to play for Arteta when Pep and Erik come calling? London is absolutely the factor

If it’s true then beside London maybe he wants a starting place guarantee (I don’t mean in the contract), but we have Case and City have Rodri plus unless you are Haaland or KdB, you are nothing special there.
Maybe Rice wants to be a key/star player in a team.

Says who?

I'm scratching my head as to why you’d turn Pep and a team who win everything down for Arsenal who have everything to prove in terms of winning trophies. The only reason I can think of is because he wants to stay in London which in itself is such an overused, boring reason.. it’s not as if he’d be living in the slums of Manchester should he join City. Strange decision.

I think @united_99 has a point when he looks at City & Utd and sees they already have DM's in Rodri and Casa,so may have concerns about playing regularly

In a team other than West Ham though I think you’d see a different side to Rice game other than just being a DM. For me he has all the qualities needed to be a top box to box midfielder. He’d play alongside Rodri and Casemiro rather than ahead of them. Just seems like a strange move to me. I keep getting told this arsenal team is here to stay and challenge but I’m not convinced, like I wasn’t all of last season when many were ready to announce them champions from Christmas onwards. At least at City, he’d be as close to being guaranteed a trophy every season.

My only concern with him partnering Casa (don't see him signing) is that we still lack someone to progress it from deep. Mount certainly provides more creativity but you would worry when we face the top sides.

Says the fact that they got 84 points last season and we're literally the only team giving City a run for their money last year. If you think we can challenge next year, of course they can.

Is he turning them down, or just agreed to go somewhere else already? City haven't even bid or done half the ground work Arsenal have. He and his partners family are all from London, it's not about having a nice house, it's about family/friends/support networks.

Not everyone has the chance to win the emirates cup year in year out.

Atletico > West Ham.

Not even saying Rice is as good as Rodri (I don't think he is) just saying the stats require context
Atletico isn't possession team, I think that's fair comparison in terms of their passing and defensive stats.

If that's not good enough for you, how about Villarreal? Still the same difference.

Rodri
17-18 for Villarreal (percentile vs CM)
Pass attempt: 88
Pass completion: 96
Tackles: 86
Interception: 69

Rice
22-23 for West Ham (percentile vs CM)
Pass attempt: 78
Pass completion: 85
Tackles: 52
Interception: 93

I think you are running out of excuses for Rice there, so lets end this here.

Man said Erik.

On a serious note, love that belief in your manager. Back him and you going places.

Look at Eriks trophy count to Artetas.

Agree with second bit and same to you, to be fair you could have easily sacked Arteta but he now looks a good manager.

Nah, Rice apparently never wanted to leave London. It probably is as simple as that.

Go home to your family from Manchester to London every day..that is a long way

How would Arteta be the main factor up against Pep and his treble winners? Makes zero sense.

Playing time and value to the team. If he's just going to be backup to Rodri then he easily might prefer to start and potentially be captain instead of warming the bench for important matches. Plus, it seems like his family is settled in London.
