The unknown yet highly rated young signings are always exciting. I'd love us yo develop him into one of the best right backs in the world and in doing so become a club legend.

After signing on the dotted line for United, Diogo Dalot spoke exclusively to MUTV about his ambitions at Manchester United.

Diogo, welcome to Manchester United. How does it feel to sign for the club?
I’m very excited for the dimension of this club and I hope to get great things here.

What do you already know about Manchester United and what are your expectations of this club?
I know that this is one of the best clubs in the world and it is unbelievable to be here and I hope to achieve great things.

You came through the system at Porto, another big club with great traditions, so what has that taught you?
I grew up at Porto. Porto gave me everything. Who I am today is because of what Porto gave to me and that has been most important.

You only made your league debut in February, but you’ve got a wealth of experience at youth level particularly, so what did it feel like to win the Under-17 European Championship?
I think that the European Championships was when I realised that I could do great things in football and, since then, I’ve been improving a lot and I hope to improve more.

How proud do you feel to be Jose Mourinho’s first Portuguese signing with United?
Yeah, it’s very good. It was very important to make this choice and I hope to help him, because I know that he will help me to improve a lot.

You’re still a teenager, but does the move show how much faith the manager has in your potential to recruit you at this early age?
Yeah, I think that age is not very important now in football. I think that if you work and you improve, I think you can handle it.

How would you describe yourself as a player?
Like a hard-working player, I think. I’m very instant in improving and I’m mostly a hard-working player, I think.

Can you play at left-back as well as at right-back?
Yeah, I prefer to play at right-back, but if I need to play in any position, I will play, no problem.

The Premier League will be new to you. You’ve already played at Anfield though, against Liverpool, helping to keep a clean sheet by the way, so what was the experience like and are you aware of the rivalry we’ve got with Liverpool?
Yeah, it was unbelievable, my debut in the Champions League. Just feeling the weather, the Champions League, the song of the Champions League, it was very good.

How excited are you for the challenge of Premier League football?
I’m very excited. For me, it is one of the biggest leagues in the world and I’m excited to play there.

What are your short-term plans and ambitions and your long-term goals here at United?

Just to help the club achieve good things here and win, because this is a winning team.

The summer tour could provide you with a chance to get to know your team-mates, to play for Manchester United as well, so how much are you looking forward to it?
Very. I’m looking forward to meeting my colleagues, to meet the staff, to meet every person and to hopefully help in some way.

Do you have a message for all the Manchester United fans, watching this throughout the world?
Just expect that I will give everything for this club, for this shirt and, hopefully, help the club to win. That’s the most important thing.

@Ban are we doing the transfer business quick enough or still too slow?
Probably not big enough names :wenger:

Anyway, a good CM and an exciting RB before the WC is decent business! I’m hopeful about a top LB and RW + maybe a quality CB.

Exciting signing. As I mentioned before, this is a proper Manchester United singing. These are the ones I get excited for, the high potential young players that we can develop. And to all those who are concerned we didn't buy a first choice right-back to replace Valencia, there's no reason that Dalot can't take his place by the end of the season. If he's good enough, he'll play.

This was unexpected. He sure is a great prospect, but had barely played for Porto's first team yet

I cannot see him suddenly breaking into Man Utd first team, whereas with Ricardo leaving for Leicester he would have an open position this season in Porto. I think someone is being overly ambitious atm
You have a point but never say never. When Varane joined Real Madrid under Jose, no one gave him a chance to be a regular. He was just about 18 and had played just about 23 games for Lens, mainly because the team had some serious injuries and he was not a starter in some of those games. Pepe already had his locked down so there was no way the young French player was going to get a chance especially with Jose in charge. So people thought. But Varane surprisingly got game after game and that marked the beginning of the end for Pepe at Madrid.

If this kid takes the chances he gets, don't be surprised if he replaces Valencia sooner than expected.

Are you a Porto fan?

And United will compensate him well if he does well here.

We probably offer some of the best wages on football to the non-big name players. Unlike a Madrid for example where there is disparity between players.
Yes I am and we are used to our best players leaving to bigger contracts so it's hard to get emotionally attached to any player here.

The problem with his departure for most Porto fans was the way he and his representatives behaved, especially after numerous circunstances where he showed profound love for the club. Players leaving is a part of football but when you kiss the badge and bring your hand to the crest you gain a new responsability to the club and its supporters. Something that Dalot learned the worst way.

No hard feelings, just wished he did things differently but at least he came to a genuinely big club.

Double D

‘Jose only signs old players’ - signs 25 year old and 19 year old in the last two days.
Mourinho has never hesitated to give young defenders a chance throughout his career. Santon, Varane, Zouma etc. Here already signed Bailly, Lindelof and now Dalot. But he doesn't have the same faith in young attackers and this is why some people get frustrated. Always wants experienced in attack and that's evident with the links to Arnautovic and Willian. I wouldn't say he's developed Lukaku because he was already a proven striker in the PL.

Good business. There is definitely potential. And even if it doesn't work out, still okay, no big financial loss. I prefer balance of high value signings and high potential signings. Shows the club is moving towards right direction. Now one CB and one RW to go. On top of that we get Veratti then better. Then if we sell Marial and buy griezmann will be cherry on top.

Great signing. Although I give him 2 games before the Caf Einsteins are declaring him a waste of money.

Just watched his first interview and there's just something about him that already makes me like this kid. Speaks good english and looks unfazed and comfortable.

Two very pleasing signings in Fred and Dalot. Two key areas addressed (Assuming Dalot will play a lot).

Now onto Toby, Sandro and Willian threads

He will make it here easily, i have no doubt he will be a top fullback for us. Everything i have read and seen so far tells me the kid will be a top player if he can stay fit.

Why don't the site admins add auto censoring of "a lot" > "Dalot" and be done with it and make things Dalot easier for people too.

Never heard of the lad before a few weeks ago. But I’m always happy to put out trust in talented young players, it’s what our club is built on and hope he will be a success.

I have no idea how good he is.

I doubt many people on this forum have seen him play more than a handful of games.

But best of luck to the lad.

I hope he's buzzing.

I am!
He has only payed a handful of first team games, so very early to suggest he's the great signing and good value that some are alluding to!
