What I said. Herrera wasn't smart on the pitch. Enthusiastic, sure, but not very talented.
I don’t agree. In fact, Herrera’s passing in the final third was underrated and under-utilised from our perspective. Even in the CL final, he played two fantastic through balls (Di Maria and Mbappe chances) which caught everyone out and should’ve been assists. For us, I clearly recall the chested pass to Pogba to score the first goal against City in the 3-2 comeback.

I know these are specific examples but all these were fantastic, creative and intelligent play. Sure we hope that VdB turns out to have a better career for us but still no reason to diss on Herrera.

Nice signing, and refreshing that we can actually sign someone with minimal fuss and without a long dragged out process which takes until 11pm on deadline day.
Love the response from our Edwin and Ajax, very classy.

Damn, did they anything similar for de jong or deligt?

They either really love him and us or something.
They tend to do this yeah, although this one is more personal with Edwin's message due to his history with the club. But they also had a page in a Spanish paper for Frenkie, and had a bus with his image drive through Barcelona. Ajax has a connection with Barcelona aswell of course. I don't know if they did anything like that with De Ligt. I said this in this thread before, Ajax's marketing team tends to go all out. Van der Sar has said that their goal outside of the Netherlands is basically to make Ajax everyone's 2nd favourite team. So this isn't just them being classy or whatever, it's smart marketing aswell.

But Van de Beek is indeed really loved at Ajax by everyone at all levels of the club. He's the kind of guy that if he couldn't play he would watch the game sometimes in the stands with the core supporters. And he played there 12 years, so he knows a lot of people. Also because he's a really good guy, right mentality. Works hard, down to earth, loyal. No ego. And he was an Ajax supporter before even joining the club. Mister Ajax, Sjaak Swart is his mentor and agent. His girlfriend Bergkamp's daughter. He's basically part of the inner circle of the Ajax family, and usually that means he'll return to the club some day in some capacity.

It's neither pronounced bake /eı/ nor beak /ı:/. Bake has a diphthong but the ee in Beek is just a long vowel /e:/. But from my experience it's hopeless trying to teach English speakers that phoneme. Saying bake in a Scottish accent might work.
Close to “beark” (Like in grizzly bear with a k), perhaps.

Well I’m Belgian myself and that’s how I pronounce it. There might be a better way of explaining it but for me the English word, “bake” is the closest example I could think of. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the English media pronounce the name “Dirk Kuyt” right once. Dutch/Flemish names are hard to pronounce for those who don’t speak the language.

Lets get this Bake/Beak/Be:k thing out out the way once and for all.

It's Bake.

And there are website for this. Listen:
https://forvo.com/word/donny_van_de_beek/
Really don't want to be pedantic about this but do I enjoy a good discussion about lingustics.

Itt's really not bake. Dutch (and German) don't even have that sound (/eɪ/), as in bake, may, crate. Infact, Dutch people who are not proficient in English will often pronounce the English word bake as beek (/beɪk/ vs /be:k/). But yes, bake is definitely close enough.

Don't want to derail the thread any further, feel free to continue in the language thread.

It's basically pronounced in the way that Americans pronounce bake. I'm Dutch myself.

The same player who allowed himself to be carried off the pitch by Mark Noble?

I liked Herrera, good squad player, but both his passion and his play were overrated.
Now if we're talking about a player who gives his all for the shirt without being as overrated as Herrera, Noble is your man

This «take care of him»-stuff is getting a bit weird, he isn’t some 8 year old traveling alone on an airplane for the first time is he? Alas, this will be interesting no matter what. Finally we are able to play team(s) without Lingard as a natural replacement, we need to be better than that, always. With Bruno we have gotten exactly what we knew we were getting in terms of style, with VdB I think very few know what to expect. Sure we all saw the Ajax-games two years ago and know about his ability, but I have no idea how he will play and make himself known in England. Always exciting, hope he’s good enough to take the step up. Sounds like a proper chap, no nonsense - no lion tattoos on his back.

It's not bake, /be:k/ is correct. See my post above (#375). It's the closest approximation in most forms of English, though.
Cheers! Trying to wrap my head round it

I think for English speakers it might make the most amount of sense to describe it as 'beh-k' but yet again I may be wrong.

MUTV - "describe your playing style to fans who haven't seen you play a lot"
VDB - "i'm a midfielder who likes to come in the box"

Well, that's me sold!

Met him a few years back, and a very genuine guy. Deserved a chance at international level, shame he never got capped. As you say, he really gives it his all and has made the most of his talent.

Looks like United have some sort of strategic alliance with Ajax.
It doesn't hurt when their CEO regularly tweets about his love for United. Not many CEO's posted things like this in the last few weeks

All West Ham fans I know say the same. If he was playing for PSG, we'd be hailing him as world class

Ajax are just lovely to deal with aren't they?

It's been so friendly that we've signed one of their players incredibly quickly for a really good price and they're almost making it feel like we've done them a favour

Surprised a lot of people don't think he will be a starter. May need a little time to settle but i'd say he will be first choicer along with Pogba and Bruno in a dynamic technical 3. Matic brings experience to see out games and play a deep lying position when required but even then if we need a more defensive setup VDB who has played 6 more than any other position will still have shout for making the team as we do not have any better combative midfielders.
Well if that's the case then we may be looking to play Pogba and VDB in a double pivot similar to how we used to play Scholes/Carrick and Fletcher.. SAF always preferred his double pivot to have one "passer" and one "runner" at a broad level while expecting both the midfielders to be box to box and handle their areas of the pitch. Pogba can handle the left hand side and generally play the role of the passer, and VDB can be the dynamic runner. Bruno can continue to play more advanced. The only problem is this is much more gung-ho and attacking than any of Ole's previous XIs.. even last season he used Matic even when he played Pogba and Herrera. So I am not sure if this is actually how we would line up.

To be fair we do see to have met their asking price straight away instead of spending months lowballing them . Plus, they may be particularity glad of the money this year. Wasn't the Dutch league outright cancelled due to Covid? They have had no matchday or TV revenue in a long time. The Premier League may be coping financially, but I imagine many of the smaller leagues have taken an enormous financial hit from Covid.

That's true. It does seem like Real Madrid backed out and Barca and the mess they're in meant they were out of the running too, so maybe we were a bit of a saviour in the end.

I'm not a Dutch speaker, but i understand German, and both German and my own language have many similarities with Dutch.
The way you say "e" in English is how we say "i", our "e" is pronounced how you say it in egg.
So to say Beek, my guess would be to just pronounce the Es like when you say the word egg in English - and no A-sound like many have suggested.

So unlike Frenkie De Jong or Ziyech, Donny has been with Ajax since he was a toddler. Small town lad who made it big. It’s one of the warmest send offs I’ve ever seen for a player.

Interested to know if De Ligt got the same send off to Juve? Any Ajax fans here who could shed light on this? He too was an Ajax kid through and through.

The letter from Edwin was a touch of class. Great man and a United legend in his own right.
