Rooney's ball and van Persie's volley.
Genuinely curious as to how is good enough to start in a WC match but doesn't feature for us at all?

Edit: See that a lot of folks share this curiosity! Wonder what's the answer.

Would have had an assist if he wasn't playing alongside Andy Carroll.

Showing great pace and work ethic

Not so good decision making
When he burst across to intercept I don’t know why he didn’t just go for goal. He just kinda stopped and got easily dispossessed

Been a very uneventful first 30 minutes for the lad. Uruguay aren't keeping the ball or attacking well , he's been reduced to defensive work.

I'm guessing they dont have many options out on the right with pace if he's playing to be honest, because he's not ready for this stage.

Pellistri has put in a couple of good balls into the box, really good balls. But not seen much in terms of overall play tbh. Doesn't seem to be involved in play much and the other players are not involving him or he isn't making himself more available to be involved in the game from midfield.

I want to see him running onto the ball more and taking shots in the 2nd half instead of being an on pitch by stander. He's done well but we need to see more.

He should be among top 3 players on the pitch in a match like this to be considered good enough for us. High expectations but it is what it is, we want to go back to top again don't we?

Did he feck. He made 21 appearances as a winger and had 0 goals or assists and spent the entire 2nd half of the season on the bench.

From the beginning of Jan '22 onwards he made only 4 sub appearances for Alaves totalling ~75 mins of football.

Must different reasons the national coach picked him. Maybe he likes him, like Southgate likes and picks Maguire despite the guy never playing. But whatever the reason, it just isn't because of his "dazzling" performances for Alaves.

I was watching his highlights in an uruguan club..not alaves

Still really good to see him play. You can see he has not been playing competitive football. He does not seem to dare or composed. Yet, I am supporting Uruguay because of him. Hope he gets more vonfident

I really like him. He seems a really hardworking and grounded young player who is just missing end product which should come with experience. At the end of the day he’s just not going to get enough games here to develop unless Antony gets a bad injury this season. I would be happy to see him have a good World Cup and then a 6 month loan with a guarantee of starting football somewhere. Even the lower championship would be a more stern test than what he’s been given in Spain.

I wouldn't be surprised if he developed into a pretty good player from here. He doesn't look out of place. Looks like he's doing his job pretty well in a tough match.

Uruguay is a nation with a population of app. 3.5m people. They do a tremendous job developing soccer players. They have Valverde at Real, Nunez at Liverpool, Arajuo at Barca, Gimenez at Athletico, Betancour at Tottenham and so forth. And of course a ton of guys well past their prime, like Suarez, Godin, Coates, Torreria and co.

Depth will however always be an issue for a nation like this. And they really must take care of their youth. Every time they don't take care of a kid -- it will leave them with a hole down the line. Pellestri should definitly in his prime be able to be a squad player for them.

BTW, I did like Nicola de la Cruz in this game.

Looked a pretty good player from the brief moments I saw.
He'll definitely need integrating if we want him to stay or he'll be gone

The guy that replaced pellestri did have a good time in such a short time. Never knew vervade was that good a player. One thing we will all agree on pellestri is his really high work rate

Someone who has a video clip of the Nunez miss which denied our Facundo an assist? I didn’t see the game

that guy Varela who was a random signed by Moyes during his time here, and played a few matches under van Gaal

The Uruguayan Zoran Tosic. Will have a decent career somewhere but not here. Hopefully we can recoup most of the fee.

Most? He's a Uruguay international- we should double our money at least

Thought he was decent enough - created a couple of openings. Korea were very well organised defensively

It's mental how he made the squad let alone is seemingly first choice

Well done to the lad though hopefully he has a good career

Good on him for starting for his country at the world cup. While I'm surprised to see him starting, considering he hasn't got a look in at all with us, it can only be a good thing for us. He gets some valuable experience, and at the same time starting for them is only increasing his value if we do look to sell down the track.

Pretty clear he’s a better player than Elanga. Hard to understand why we haven’t used him this season.

Yep no doubt. Not sure what Rangnick and ETH are thinking.

Looks to have something about him, shame the last two years of his development have been wasted.

He reminds me a bit of Garnacho in terms of how direct he is. Would be exciting to see them both on the pitch.

I like him, very direct. I think he has good vision and technique too. Is very slight in a foot race and the one thing for me little I have seen of him is the technique and vision is wasted a bit with him driving forward out wide.

Personally think there is a really good player to develop there but I see him more as a number 10 like an Ariel Ortega or even an attacking midfielder like Bernado SIlva.

With Fernandes and Antony starting and others ahead dont see him getting opportunities here sadly....but I think he should get minutes from the bench as he has really good potential, much more than a couple ahead of him
