So I'm pretty sure that I'm going to finish 2nd or 3rd in my first season with Everton... one game left that I will play later.

Using similar tactics to the previous version but also making the most of set pieces. Will post a more detailed update later but does feel a bit easy again in some respects. Have noticed that a few players are rated too highly. Danjuma for example is much much better than he should be.

I also think that because of him being much better than he should be, next season will or should be a lot harder. His release clause is 45m and I can't afford it. Harrison will also leave. DCL wants to leave from pretty much the start of the game and is refusing to extend so likely to sell him too. Was only given 35m so will see how much I can recoup from other players and then try to snip my way to success.

My scouts have highlighted two very good cheapish wingers though that I imagine are on wonderkid type shortlists and I'd be surprised if they joined me over other clubs if they were in for them.

One thing that also annoyed me is that I just got an update at the end of the season that Beto had finally learnt basic English. He already knows much more than basic English in real life.

The games been too easy for the last three years, won the league and champions League with Bournemouth in my second season in last years version, which is simply ridiculous.

The mobile game suffers from the same too, some tactics and players are just simply too good.

Is Prestianni one of them? He looked ridiculously good in my save. Tried signing him and the cnut asked 70k/w as an 18 year old. Screw that.

Nope.

Bryan Zaragoza + Rooney Bardghji

I remember the latter from last year's version but he's great in this one too it seems.

Do they still do that thing with young players where they've got low physical stats to begin with? I could always understand strength being on the lower end but it doesn't make sense that fecking teenagers would have really low stamina too. If anything, teenagers should be on the higher end of stamina as a group, even if their physical strength stats aren't.

What's the consensus on this then? Worth it after 2023?

I've heard the game is harder than previous versions.

I think managing in the EPL is easy though, you get a shit ton of money very quickly and can outbid most of Europe.

There were only two games all season I did not score in.

Played either depending on opposition and as with the last game, I changed the in possession/in transition/out of possession tactics depending on what my assistant said was best pre-game.

No money in summer so reduced to free transfers and loan of Sarr to tide me over until injured players came back. in January there were a few bargains to pick up thankfully.

Also this just popped up -

Everton's current squad scoring 92 league goals? I mean, well done, but unfortunately that's just silly. :(

I don't disagree. It was meant to be more a post that it is a bit too easy still with the correct tactic and players aren't really balanced correctly. Both Beto and DCL are very good strikers for anyone in the league, Danjuma is far too good and corners can be exploited at the near post again so a unit like Branthwaite gets a bunch of goals.

Yeah, it's a shame that the same issues still plague the game year after year.

It's becoming pretty tiresome to dream up new ways to tie one hand behind my back (only playing on the counter, only signing players born x distance from the stadium etc) when you know at any time you can just gegenpress and corner trick your way to the title with a mid-table squad if you're playing straight up - and that's before the AI's long term squad management has crippled your rivals.

At least they've been open about this being another incremental update and they seem to be putting their resources behind 25 as an overhaul so I'll look forward to that, but there are a lot of faults the game has had for a long time for them to overcome.

Pretty much. I'll definitely try a different tactic and way of doing things on another save but it's so easy to just slip back into the gegen.

Having Saudi in the game feels a bit like cheating. You can sell players for the top fee without having to worry about them playing and scoring against you in the league/CL.

Just found another minor annoyance. DCL refused to sign a new contract and told me he wanted to leave all season. I tried to sign a new deal with him at the end of the season and he wouldn't even sign with me. I sell him and the squad is furious.

Guess what? Oh yeah, there is no option to say "He wanted to leave" or something to that extent. Just so easy to put that in but now my dynamics will be ruined because of having to choose an option that isn't really true.

This is another thing they were supposed to have fixed tbh.

I think it's plausible for the squad to be pissed off regardless, but you need to at least people to explain that's the reason for selling him.

I think your tactics kinda show what the issue is. And I’ve done this myself in fms. Making a tactic to essentially beat the match engine as opposed to a ‘sense making and logical tactic’. I mean just look at the balance issues with your set up.
All your midfielders are basically set up to abandon their MF positions. Lots of roaming. Ball and space chasing roles that simply wouldn’t work in real life. You’ve got an inverted right winger who’s preferred foot is his right. An inverted left winger who’s preferred foot is left, you just wouldnt see that often in real life. You’ve got pass into space and play out of defence. I feel as if these are contradictions. Two ball playing centre halves who in real life definitely not ball playing centre halves.
But yeah, absolutely not having a go here (I’ve done it too) but this is the biggest issue with fm for me over the years. You end up playing systems and tactics that will get you success at the expense of realism. You know nonsensical player roles and tactics will break the game.
My way of moving away from this is I’ve stopped picking specialist roles. So now it’s all generic roles and then I add individual instructions.

I do feel with this though it does kind of reflect real life. The most successful teams nowadays do play a high press system. Counter attacking teams and managers are getting a lot less success. What should be done is the threshold for making it work should be higher. Like maybe certain attributes have to be extremely high (18-20) for workrate stamina etc to make it work as efficiently as it does.

Disagree that Branthwaite and Tarkowski aren't ball playing centre halfs (It's also their preferred positions in game). Both are very comfortable with the ball and have demonstrated a few times this season (IRL) good passing range that have led to chances.

The pass into space and play out of defence contradiction you speak about is standard when you pick the gegenpress option.

Wouldn't say that they're all roaming positions either. BWM is a fairly strict role and has hold position as one of it's key metrics. Also the IFB role applied to Myko gives the defensive security while letting Patterson on the right to explore more and then Garner on the left to explore more.

Do agree though that the inverted tactics don't really matter in terms of preferred foot. I had success with whoever I played out wide on either sides. Harrison, McNeil and Danjuma all got 15ish goal contributions and they were rotated between the RW/LW options.

Overall the game in an attacking sense I think goes too much in the way of favouring players that 'attack the space' so to speak and kind of bombarding the oppostion with it.

The gegenpress does suffer in latter stages of games on this version. There were a few games where I was winning by 2 or 3 and then the other side scored a few late goals to make it nervy but due to me scoring enough I got over the line.

I think the threshold should be higher with the BPCB. Most PL footballers even centre backs can pass the ball a bit and make chances. The game needs to make such specialized roles only suitable for the elite. I feel that would help with increasing the difficulty level.

Take it you mean the pre-set ge-gen? If so yeah it's a contradiction with play out defence I think. I've personally never picked the both of them. I pick pass into space when I feel i'll have counter opportunities and want to move the ball forward quickly and more directly so passing out of defence seems a bit of a contrast to that.

BWM doesn't roam in the sense of roaming forward. It sticks to a zone but still has close down more and tackle harder which by default will mean the player leaves the space a bit more. In real life for example, the best BWM over the last ten years i think we can agree is Ngolo Kante. Kante always had what id describe as a deep lying playmaker alongside him, whether that be Drinkwater, Matic or Jorginho. You wouldnt see him paired with an attacking eight almost (Garner in your team or a b2b roamer). The balance simply wouldnt be there. We're basically trying to do it with Casemiro/Bruno/Mount and its been an abject failure.

But overall yeah its a game that is too lopsided towards running towards the ball/space. I remember in FM 19 I had a save with 3 BWM and 3 pressing forwards with Barnet and it was successful. They have at least improved the fatigue issue that comes with it.

I’m actively trying not to play as I don’t want to get into a proper save before the actual game comes out just in case

That's fair regarding the CBs.

I don't think it's that much of a contradiction given that I think the match engine probably has pre-coded stuff to make sure the players take the right option to pass into space in the moment but then you still see mistakes trying to play out/pass into the space. Plus passing into space is the overall side, not just the defence.

I think though in regards to the roaming midfielders, the inverted full backs or wing backs compensate for the more attacking options in midfield, plus a B2B midfielder still has defensive responsibility, as does the central midfielder, albeit to a lesser extent. Also in game I don't find playmakers that useful or ever working as they used to since passing into space is such an exploitative measure that every player is pretty much capable of. It's definitely something they need to fix for the next game and tactical balance.

The balance isn't there for United because Mount/Bruno both excel in the attacking third and both are relatively poor players in their own half.

Same thing just happened with Mykolenko in 2nd season in Jan. Refused to sign new contract amid Saudi interest. Sold him for 60m. This time there was an option to say that he wanted to leave. Weird.

Couldn't imagine playing this game solo, just doesn't appeal to me anymore. But doing a network game is the best thing ever. I'm Norwich and my mate is Ipswich. 6th and 9th in the league respectively but I also had the pleasure of knocking him out of the 3rd round of the fa Cup. The hype was real when that draw was made!

What's the average a team hits the woodwork per season? I've struck it 56 times which feels quite a lot more...

I think they have coded into the game that English teams don't go in for Greenwood. Finished the second season and he was let go by United and only foreign clubs were interested.

I think this is another good step forward in the series, particularly tactically and with the match engine but it's not without issues that are similar to before like dynamics, contract demands within one or two seasons, and AI squad building.

The Saudi stuff is interesting but also a bit of a hindrance. As soon as a player goes there it's pretty impossible to sign them as they are suddenly earning 500k+ a week even if they're probably a 50k+ a week player. Also you can't compete transfer wise for them as if they bid for a player you also do, their wage demands match the Saudi offer so it's impossible to match.

Injuries feel a bit more frequent than usual and especially GKs seem to get hit by them a bit more than you see.

The latter two issues are small enough that you can get by though quite easily and I hope they make a better effort to sort the same old problems.

Yeah some of those like the GK injuries do sound like normal beta problems. Quite concerned about the AI squad building and player interaction systems still looking deeply flawed though.

Not FM 24 related but in FM 23 I've just quickly made an editor file docking City 100 points for breaching budget rules every season from the start of the game until they drop out of the National League North and simming it has been quite amusing.

I usually get bored with FM as I just do the same shit every year. Download a Gengenpress 4-3-2-1 that exploits the ME and never bother changing anything. Becomes a yawnfest after a couple seasons

This time I've set myself the challenge of taking United back to the top using an old fashioned 4-4-2 that I create myself, kinda inspired by our 99 team. Surprisingly it's going really well. I'm no tactical genius, but it feels like every AI team plays narrow and presses, so the wide wing play of the 4-4-2 is working well against the AI. It's really enjoyable having an idea, implementing it and tweaking it to get results. Oh and changing to comprehensive highlights makes matches much more immersive as you can really get an idea for how you're performing.

For transfer activity I sold Varane to the Saudi's for £62m, McTominay to Chelsea, Lindelof to Spurs, then I bought Osimhen and Upamecano.

The people, who design the social interactions in this game must have about the IQ as the imaginary people running the CPU clubs in this game.

"Hey can we give you pain killers, so you can play through your injury?"

"No, I don't want to."

Finished the third season with Brighton, won the league and CL, lost the FA Cup final and all that while playing last three weeks with a 1-star rated GK due to the injuries. Gegenpress is indeed still too overpowered and the AI allowed me to pick up so many great players for peanuts, with Saudi clubs paying 70-80m for your squad players the teambuilding never been easier. I also wish it was not that easy (you can do it in one season with any half decent club) to have the best coaching/youth setup in the world.

got bored even before the official release  I guess it’s now time to do the annual save with some limitations making the game more challenging. I like the idea of a poster above with United only tactic being 4-4-2, maybe I give it a run along with only U23 signings and skipping the early transfers of well known wonderkids.

Yeah, still daft. Don't understand the training one the most.

"You've trained well"

"I don't think I have"

"Ok no worries let's agree to disagree"

"I can't move past this".

Same old.

Just finished my 3rd season with Everton. Haaland scored 48 league goals for City to charge them to the title. I've finished 3rd, 2nd, 3rd. Won a league cup and fa cup. It's easy to get consistency together with a tactic to finish top 4 but find that it's hard in those crunch moments in finals and semi-finals to get over the line with players that aren't to a good standard sometimes especially if you come up against Liverpool or City.

I'm disappointed with how poor Patterson and Onana develop in game (perhaps I just got unlucky).

my side going into my 4th season so far is

Pickford, Kayode, Diomande, Branthwaite, Ito, Casemiro, Renato Sanches, Garner, Bardghji, Pinyaev, Evan Ferguson

Have a bit of money after selling some squad players so about to replace Garner.

"Hey can we give you pain killers, so you can play through your injury?"

"No, I don't want to."

"Alright, fair enough."

"I HATE YOU AND I WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO TRUST YOU AGAIN!"
For me social interactions were quite bugged as well and I reported that to SI. I’d have a senior player make a giant fuss about not enough depth at the CB, while I had 2x 4 star CBs (both under 23 yo), 1x 3 star lad and two top prospects I was regularly giving games. I promised him to play the youth in this position, he accepted the promise, I was playing these damn teenagers even more and he was still trying to detonate my dressing room. Feck off Solly March, sure you’d prefer I pulled off an AI 5D chess move and signed some idiot past his prime for 40m only to never play him and watch him rot.

I anyhow struggled with this in the 2nd season, always getting close but ultimately narrowly losing, but the third season I destroyed City in the CL semis and Barcelona in the final while having much inferior squad and not even tweaking the tactics so much, I believe the team chemistry, all the green links between the players and the fact they were well drilled in the overpowered gegenpressing was the reason it was so easy for me.
