He works hard to nullify attacking options by the opposition just a shame he is so crap on the ball.

He requires a Playmaking midfielder next to him for the team to function, his passing isnt his asset. We need a Veratti/xavi/scholes "Type" CM to partner him.

Exactly it's the pogbas, James, Bruno's that should be doing the killer balls, he breaks up the play and then passes it on

I agree. I thought it would be a bloodbath in here because he gave the ball away a few times but he was alright. Nothing special today. Our defenders were our best performers really.

I was thinking the same during the match... but that only goes for Pogba. Fred and Bruno gave away the ball quite often and not always in safe spots but there isnt really any mention of it here at all.

Overall i think he did alright today. Nothing special or fancy but that isnt something you expect of Fred anyway.

I like Fred but it wasn’t his best game. He always works his ass off but it was one of those scrappy games where we just needed someone composed to get on the ball and dictate. The subs did nothing. Bruno disappeared when he was moved out to the right to accommodate Pogba and Cavani. the team looked disjointed after they came on. I thought Pogba jogged around and pretended to go in to every 50/50 but I’m not getting into a Pogba argument. He is what he is.

He was very good today. Stopped them playing and getting any rhythm going by his doggedness, and helped keep them pinned back with quick short passing. It was not his job to create today.

He works hard but he is what he is. Against sides better than us his work rate and engine help to no end, but in games where we have to dictate he’s not good enough with the ball.

Think him and Scott's lack of creativity wouldn't have been an issue at all if James provided any type of attacking threat. They were there to do a specific job and they did it wonderfully as Chelsea created absolutely very little, and what little they did create didn't come centrally.

I agree that him and Scott at times were too risk averse in trying to hit balls over the top or through the lines to Rashford, but Chelsea were too comfortable as James provided no threat at all.

I still trust both him and Scott atm far more than Pogba who seems well off it despite some bright passages against PSG.

I hope the people criticizing his use of the ball are doing so even more for McTominay who's even worse on the ball.

Is that a conclusion from today or in general? We are yet to see what happens when he plays (with current team mates) against mid to low table teams.

It wasn't a great game from him, but I don't understand what people expect from him playing with James and Mata on wings against Chelsea. Imo he did his job, just like McTominay and CBs. Attacking players failed today (or the attacking setup in general).

Edit: basically what @AR87 said. Not much is going through our midfield these days, and that's also why CBs look much better.
But today we only had a plan how to stop Chelsea, no strategy how to hurt them. That's not on Fred though.

Would be rather mint if he stopped trying then...Essentially he has one job, win the ball back and pass it to someone that isn't useless at passing.

I've barely seen anyone as dodgy as Fred on the ball, every pass looks like an effort, not to mention the crap passes where he's setting up our players for 50-50 duels like the one where Pogba nearly got injured.

Played ok, passing was no worse than anyone else on either side. I think when you are playing against a back 5 looking for basically Rashford only, is not easy playing the ball forward. Neither James or Mata made themselves available. When Greenwood and Pogs came on, there were more passing options available.

The vultures will always be circling him and we're quiet on Tuesday. Fred is not the problem, the line up really didn't help with those forward players against 3 CB's....

He reminds me of Anderson in the way he passes and shoots

We shouldn’t have to buy players to make him better....am I doing it right ?

A player that epitomizes that Gattutso meme - sometimes maybe good, sometimes maybe shit.

How the hell was he shit. Because he misplaced some passes? Big deal. Literally Bruno does it 4 times a game and everyone rightfully rides his dick.

Without Fred we would have lost because he gives us defensive stability in a double pivot alongside Mctomminay.

Anderson is a very good passer of the ball and is a much football player than Fred. He simply cannot shoot. That said Fred's job is not to create. He did his job.

Hit and miss but he does the defensive work of more than one player. If it's the Champions League final tomorrow I feel more confident picking Fred than Pogba.

Fred and McTom do a job protecting the back 4 but give them then ball inside the opposition and it’s either a sideways Or backwards Pass . They’re completely pointless if we are looking to break a team

Problem is not him and Fred but its the balance of the whole team.

Playing him and Fred is fine but then you have to compensate the lost creativity in some other areas . Problem is James, AWB and to an extent Shaw offers absolutely nothing going forward. If we had half decent options there, we would be much better.

Thought he was poor today, far too many misplaced passes. People can compare him to Bruno who misplaced his fair amount (and was poor today), but their roles are completely different, with different responsibilities and requirements.

Feel like DvB or Matic would have given us a much stronger foothold in the game to create chances.

Fred and McTom allowed both our fullbacks so high on the pitch. You can see how often McTom was covering RB.

It's just same old same old story though. Both our fullbacks are crap when attacking. An assist or goals here and there couldn't mask how often they are allowed to go forward but did nothing. In AWB case, he couldn't even make some simple passes.

There's a difference though in where and how they lose possession. Bruno usually does it trying to inject creativity or make an incisive pass, Fred has weird moments where he misplaces two of the most basic 5 yard sideways passes before hitting an inch perfect crossfield ball with his weak foot.

That said, I do like Fred. He did a pretty good job today, and was my MOTM against PSG. He just has some weirdly sloppy spells in games.

Fred- Thiago would have been such a great combo with Bruno ahead of them. He needs a playmaker beside him who can control and dictate the game.

Bruno is still a playmaker, he’s Muller type of attacking mid. There is a similar reason why Portugal doesn‘t put Ruben Neves & Bruno in the same XI but instead they played William & Danilo behind Bruno.

He played well today. Did his job and nullified their midfield.

His role isn’t to play amazing passes, he is a DMF and breaks play up and keeps the ball moving.Simple.

Totally agree. Was really showing last night that paired with McTominay we get too much of the same from them. A lot of fight and runs, but not enough calmness, creativity, passing range and vision. But Ole must have gone into this match expecting to be dominated on the ball by Chelsea and therefore playing two ballwinners and runners.

Given how Chelsea have played under Lampard it was a fair approach, but I would love for the manager of Man United to expect us to dominate ball possession at home against Chelsea. Especially after beating PSG away in the CL. I get that under Ole we have been very effective with a defensive counterattacking approach against better teams. But at some point we surely must expect us to be good at other aspects than counterattacks?

Watching Fred and Kante play at the same time is quite funny. They are essentially the same - keep winning the ball back and giving them away.
