Castles is just an apprentice comparing to Marzio. Trying to get involved when the new has been already broken by someone else, what a pathetic effort

Only watched a couple of games where he played and never really noticed him much. From the highlight videos I've seen he reminds be of Ramires, would I be right in making that comparison?

Has anyone here watched him play regularly?
I haven't seen hm play, but from secondhand analysis it seems he is a Paulinho/Ramires type. = A multi-positional Brazilian runner, who can carry the ball and is okay at a lot of things.

He seems one-paced (frenetic), if his ball control in these vids is anything to go by.

Seems like a fit for a Mourinho team, but if there's also truth in the Milinkovic-Savic rumours I'd much rather stick both the Fred & Savic money together and go all out for an absolute diamond like Kroos, Pjanic, Saul or Veratti.

Or just buy Savic and then pick up a younger passer who can offer something a bit more different to Herrera off the bench.

This guy made the most sense in my opinion.

If this deal does get done, we'll see a different Sanchez next season....hopefully!

For awhile there, I thought it was the striker Fred, the one who was in Brazil's dismal 2014 WC squad. Phew.

My point was that it’s not a set of players with specific attributes that need replacing like for like. Our squad was never a perfect set anyway. It’s not like it is some sort of ideal collection of players who all brought something specific to the table and that all those ingredients must be replaced to maintain this perfect equilibrium we have that is fundamental to this well oiled footballing machine Mourinho is in charge of.

He’s a midfielder and that’s about where it ends in terms of replacing what Carrick and Fellaini brought to the table. He’s got a very different skill set and hopefully the dynamism in his play bring us something we have been missing and raise our game.

This back to when Carrick replaced Keane, taking his shirt and all. They couldn’t have been more different in personality and play style and many said Carrick wasn’t fit to lace his boots let alone wear his shirt. Despite that he slotted into that team in 06/07 and changed our fortunes completely.

So in short, If signed, he won’t be replacing them in one specific way or another. He’s going to be a midfielder that has his own assets to bring, assets that Mourinho has recognised this squad is short of regardless of whether Carrick and Fellaini are off or not.

But yeah, you really should have been able to induce all that from my one line joke.
You still didn't answer my question though. I was asking about why it's so bizarre to ask if Fred is similar to our leaving midfielders and whether he is any like Kante or not in you know, his transfer thread. The fact that we don't need to replace our midfielders like for like or Fred being a completely different player to Carrick, Fellaini or Kante are separate points and you've just described these with your paragraphs.

You know, people read fan forums to share their opinions/get information about their teams, players, potential signings etc. and they don't react well when they come across cynical and disparaging replies/answers to their questions. But yeah, maybe i should have ignored your sanctimonious "one line joke" completely to prevent derailing this thread.

Is it me or everyone looks offside in this video?
Think about it, that’s a huge compliment to a midfielder. That means the timing of his pass is perfect. You’d get the same impression if you watched a compilation video of Iniesta. Different leagues though, literally.

Those passes look so foreign to me. I don't watch football other than United and I've become accustomed to seeing our players make sideway passes most of the time when they're in the final third.

Also, not many of our players make runs anymore.

Very happy with this signing, and happy we're getting business done early. Fred, alderweireld, alex sandro all look very likely, and whoever we get at right back. Question will then be who is the attacker and who the other midfielder is. Will be much more balance in midfield though. Hope he shines.

Manchester Utd never lose, just run out of time
A midfield of Herrera/Fred/Pogba could be interesting.

We'd get much more out of Herrera too, if we played a higher line and pressed more (although you only have to look at Jones' calamity in the final to realise why Jose is reluctant to do so).
That's what I'm wondering. If we played with that midfield, Sanchez on the left and Willian (if we get him) on the right...suddenly that's a team built to press high, hard and fast. It is a bit unlike Mourinho, but I wonder...

So he's not a DM then?
He sounds like a Modric in terms of defensive responsibility more than a Fernandinho.
I think Fred is closer to being a Fernandinho than a Modric actually because like Fernandinho, Fred is more of a utility midfield player. That's something people forget about Fernandinho. Most label him a DM but in reality he is one of the utility greats. The guy can play multiple roles in the midfield - as the pivot in the middle, as a DM, as a B2B midfielder as deep lying playmaker and even as an AM. Much have been said about KDB and Sane this season but for me, the Brazilian has been key to City's incredible season.
I see Fred with that utility ability in the midfield. In fact Shahktar bought him to replace Fernandinho and he has been tried in various positions in their midfield.

I suspect Jose saw Pogba as a midfielder who could do that because of his unique abilities (and I agree considering his physical and technical attributes) hence he has deployed him in multiple midfield roles. But Ppgba hasn't lived up to Jose's expectation and suddenly every pundit started saying Pogba could only thrive playing on the left in a 4-3-3 midfield. For a tactical minded manager like Jose who prides himself in setting up his teams differently each time based on who he is playing, that must be frustrating.

Fred may not be as good as Fernandinho and may lack Pogba's technical prowess but he makes up for things with his energy, drive and willingness to play anywhere in the middle.

Looks very comfortable on either foot from the vid posted a few pages back. He seems to have all the attributes to be a very good signing.

Is it me or does his close ball control in tight spaces not look too great?
I agree. He seems to be out of control all of the times. Doesn't have the "composure" everyone here seems to say he has. His passes are too heavy and it doesn't look like he moves smoothly. I am underwhelmed. Plays like Anderson on his bad days.
I would love us to have Savic even if he costs twice as much.

Those passes from the clip shared by VancouverFan looks sublimed since there are players who actually make off the ball movements. Sadly, the only players doing off the ball movements are Lingard and Lukaku.

If we do not sort out our offensive line, starting with Sanchez, the purchase of Fred is just going to create more problems for us considering that we just increased the number of players who wants to dictate with ball in our team.

My first thoughts as well regarding the pass timing.

You can sign as many players as he likes, nothing is going to change with his tactics and approach.

His style of play reminds me of a mini Moussa Dembele. Hard to dispossess, strong in running with the ball and an all rounder.
I've only watched the City highlights, have you seen lots of him?

Against City he was late to a lot of challenges, enough to pick up enough yellow cards to be sent off. He seems a bit rash. I didn't think he looked strong, easily knocked over.

There is clearly some talent, but looks quite raw to me. I think he'll need bulking up for Premiership and will take a couple of seasons for him to work out when skills are useful and when they aren't. Against City they didn't gain him any benefit, just ran into City players.

Don't gets the complaints. Might not be world class but he seems like a big part of what we've been missing; someone who can pass the ball forward, play balls through tight defenses and run forward with the ball. Our transition play and final balls have been dreadful, hopefully this guy can play a big part in fixing that. This is the sort if signing I trust Jose with.

So we are finally signing a competent central midfielder, watch us make him a Carrick when he has so much more to give ala Anderson (one of the highest rated AM in the game at the time)

Hopefully we'll see more runs from the forward line once they have faith that their run will be spotted by the passer. There's only so many times a player will make a run if the pass doesn't come before they start looking to come short to get impact the game.

I watched that game against City. The entire Shakhtar looked in shock by that level of high pressure for obvious reasons. His highlights in that game look so bad because in the first 30 minutes he was like an amateur there. Then he could adapt to that level and did ok.

After those games Pep Guardiola tried to sign him for 50 millions, it was confirmed by Shakhtar president this week.

People need to calm down watching highlights of one or two games. Its not like the scouts of a massive club work. The two best coaches in the world want to sign the player. And the coach of the Brazilian nt did not call Jorginho(when he could) or Fabinho, but Fred is in the squad.

Would be a statement of intent for Burnley. Not sure Real Madrid need him with Casemiro, Kroos, Modric etc
