So we wanted him last summer but at that time Woodward blocked the move because he believed Maguire was too expensive at £70million/not better than the defenders we had, and wanted Varane instead.

A year later we're paying a word record transfer fee for the very same defender? Shows how clueless Woodward is. WOODWARD OUT.
Mourinho wanted experienced defender, I doubt he took a look at Maguire who was 25. His preference was Alderweireld which Spurs valued at £60M back then and Woodward blocked it. I think decision was not made on Maguire until late, no time to do business.

This time Ole made it clear that is the center back he wants. No flipping flopping. Compared to someone that changed his transfer targets several times.

Absolutely mental amount of money for a player who I think still has flaws in his game but this is the precedent that was set by Liverpool when they signed van Dijk.

I don't see Maguire as the solution to our defensive problems
but he ticks a few boxes - plays in the left channel, aerially dominant, can play a bit on the ball and clearly a player who the manager rates. If nothing else, it gives us the opportunity of having a settled back 4 for the first time in however many years, though it's still a pretty fecking massive premium to pay for that luxury.
Cool so 50m & 80m on two defenders still don't fix our defensive problems, then what else will?
If these two acquisitions don't fix our defensive problems, then the issue isn't in defence.

Not sure how useful this is as doesn't show number of games or average per game, e.g. is Jones high stats from fewer games/ minutes.

What is clear is Maguire as a whole looks at least as good as Smalling for tackling, but comes with a whole host of other benefits...ability on the ball, stronger in the air, better at dribbling and general consensus is a more natural leader.

The stats on Jones may or may not be interesting, either A) not a big enough sample as always injured or B) other mistakes really offset the generally high quality otherwise.

Not sure how you came to that conclusion from these stats  If anything it shows that he is probably the worst and it also shows that most stats are just useless and misleading if you show it as a sum, not average per game.

Totally agree with your post. These 2 guys will sort the defence but some people who have no clue about football see a team concede goals and right away blame the keeper and defence. Defending actually does start from the front and especially in midfield if you have a midfield that neglects it's defensive duties then the defenders have no hope

I expect we'll be much improved in terms of conceding fewer goals this season because we've signed those two (and no longer have a freak in charge playing McTominay and Matic in a back three) but I don't think it will eliminate all defensive problems.

Maguire cost a lot of money but still has his faults and Lindelof, while much improved on his first season, is still far from the finished article. It's a relatively young defence so it could improve with time but I don't think it will click as quickly as it did for Liverpool when they signed van Dijk, for example.

Jones is the defensive version of a flat track bully goalscorer. Instead of scoring a bucketload of goals against weaker and mid table teams, he pads his stats with a lot of involvement and actions. Unfortunately those stats dont tell you how often he makes a mistake at the back that could cost us, because thats the part that makes Jones less effective. But basically in a normal premier league match Jones will generally make a number of good defensive contributions which may or may not be ruined by a mistake at the back, which hes a bit prone to.

Especially if you dont show that Maguire played 31 games to Smalling's 24, Lindelof's 30, Jones' 18 and Bailly's disaster filled 12.

Of course he's going to have more of most things if he plays 7 more matches than Smalling. Only the Lindelof number is really worth comparing

We got Maguire, whatever the issues with the fee are, we have to strongly support him now. He is our absolute number 1 CB so let's hope he is off to a great start at our club.

In all the talk about being the most expensive defender in the world, dont forget that he'll also be the most expensive English player in history

Sterling was just £58 million

So who is confident he'll put us into the title race next season?

Are you on a mission to prove that your boy Smalling is worthy or what? Just get behind Maguire, it's done, Smalling will never be a first 11 player for our club again.

Until we get Sancho next year for £120m

One CB won’t take us from 6th to title contenders, no, that would be totally unrealistic. The entire managent and every single player need to improve to get us back into the top 4 for a start.

Last season the management failed and almost every single United player had a poor season, so a lot of things need to change from the top down. The new signings will help of course but it’s a team effort.

Maguire and Wan-Bisska will improve the defence, but all the attackers need to be ruthless and score more goals and De Gea needs to get back to his best. It will be a collective effort.

 How can people say this after he has been alongside Shaw our best player last season?
What did Lindelof (or Shaw) do that was so great last season? I don't remember a game where he was brilliant defensively or on the ball which is supposedly his strength. Our defensive record was terrible and he played the most games. He's overrated on here because his name isn't Smalling or Jones and he wasn't as much of a disaster as his first season.

Can we get a chant going to the tune off 'Yaya, Kolo Toure' and replace the names with 'Slab Head and Phil Jones'?

No matter who we bought we weren't going to challenge next season, it's going to take time to gel the team and improve the mentality.

Pointless when Stones/Laporte got Fenandinho/Rodri and Van dijk/Matip has Fabinho. Maguire/lindelof has fecking matic
I agree there, I do think Maguire is an upgrade on our CB's but one of our big issues defensively is our DM is way past his best and moves like an oil tanker.

Him and Cundy banging on about how shit we are almost made me want to phone in and scream.
A couple of united fans rang in with such appallingly thought out views that the gruesome twosome looked like all knowing legends in comparison.

Agree with your point, but this kind of did happen at Liverpool
