Ian Brown- Interview On United

No it's not - they're great songs, but not as good as pretty much anything on that first Roses album

Here's why I'm not gonna engage in a long discussion with you, mate.

Word. Estimating a band's or record's influence is too to some degree.

Pretty incredible stuff alright ! Quite baffling

Not as bad as Shane living in denial he is from Merseyside - at least I was raised in Manchester, therefore having much more of a claim to being a Mancunian than Shane who thinks that by supporting United from the age of ten or whatever makes him more Manc than me for some reason.

The Stone Roses are my all time favorite band, but if you look at what's happened in music since the mid 90s Def Maybe was, is and will forever be the most important album of it's decade. Not even Nevermind can match it's influence. And to claim songs like Live Forever, Supersonic and Slide Away are inferior to The Roses or anything else is rubbish. I prefer The Stone Roses because I'm more into their vibe, but Oasis made - pop-cultuarlly - a much bigger splash.

A voice of reason......
Same as I feel mate, I got through stages where I prefer the Roses, then sometimes I have an inkling to just stick some Oasis on or whatever.

A bloke born in Ceylon happily admits he is Sri Lankan, Shane.
Just admit it; you are a dirty, thieving, lying, slashing, rat-eating Scouser.......

Warrington?
Was he born there?
He went to Alty Boys Grammar school, I know that, because I went there too.
And my Mum used to teach his kid at Stamford Road primary.

I go To Altrincham now, my Dad was one year older than Ian Brown in the same school too, what year did you leave mate?

Johnno..

Merseyside didn't exist when I was born...

So, you are either -

A) Mistaken.
B) Accusing me of being a time traveller.
C) A complete dick.

You choose...

How about option d) which may very well incorporate option c) too to be fair, but never mind Merseyside didn’t exist when you were born, it did shortly after you were born and does now, and has been in existence for a long time now (you old fart), so you are a Merseysider, hence a Scouser.
Are you still in St Helens?

Eh?
but never mind Merseyside didn’t exist when you were born,
But, but.. it didn't.. so I couldn't have been born there... it's as simple as that really..

A good 5 years after I was born.. in Lancashire..

Are you still in St Helens?
Don't be nosey..

You are still in Oz though Johnno.. just because you stayed over here on an extended break.. and copied our culture.. you come from the other side of the world.. from the land down under.. heh heh heh...

i just watched a documentary about the roses....feck me they were dumb back then....what were they thinking by hiring that feckin head the ball manager of theirs.........he totally blew their chances of being (as noel gallagher said) "bigger than the beatles"

It says you were born in 1971 on your profile, which means you were three when Merseyside came to be in 1974 after the Local Governments Act of 1972.
So, you are a Merseysider.
Do you still reside in St Helens?
You'll probably find Australia these days is far more Americanised than British unfortunately - wide, multi-lane roads and highways with fast-food outlets on almost every single street corner, strip-malls, shopping malls, kids wearing basketball shoes, The kids over here even say 'ass' instead of the more traditional English-inspired 'arse'.
Make of that what you will.

Hurray..

You got there in the end fella, you have finally researched that Merseyside didn't exist when I was born.. it's took you a while.. but I congratulate you..

So, you are a Merseysider.
Scrap that.. it seems you haven't after all...

I've said all along, in agreement, Merseyside never existed in 1974, as didn’t Greater Manchester, I know that, my statements if you bother to look back and peruse through have been that you have lived in Merseyside for many years since it has become Merseyside, so your argument is a bag of poo-poo, just like the place you grew up in.
Never mind if you don’t understand anything outside of Britain mate, you're obviously far too naïve to understand feck all else.

Oasis were decent for a while, a few excellent songs and a good first album. But listening to them with a few years' distance makes you realise that a lot of the excitement of the time was due to being hammered in a bar and enjoying a nice sing-along. The tunes are very derivative, the lyrics are generally abysmal.

The Stone Roses produced a virtually perfect album. After that they mainly took skag and rammed cars into each other in Wales. But a masterpiece is a masterpiece.

I'll see you in the Tollgate on Sunday Johnno.. you can get the ale in...

Succinctly put.

Mate, I'd love to meet you for a beer in Manchester, I honestly would because you seem like a funny cnut to have a beer with as advised by lads like Brad and Manx and them, but I am shackled to my convict chains here in Botany Bay I'm afraid, so you may have to put them beers on ice til the next time I'm over, which probably won’t be this year, but thanks for the invite.

Greater Manchester was created on 1 April 1974 as a result of the Local Government Act 1972.

I agree totally with the part about TSR, but for my money you and other people in this thread are selling Oasis short. As you put it a masterpiece is a masterpiece and how anyone can consider DefMaybe to not be one is beyond me. Yes, the lyrics are far from brilliant, but they're very effective for the mood the album is championing, much like Ian Brown's limited voice is perfect for The Stone Roses (and to a lesser extent his solo albums). There's not a single weak song on there and if you take a long, hard look at the path rock has taken since the mid 90s you'll see just how important it was.

It's interesting to note Shane and one or two others who have contested the Stone Roses over oasis thing with me have suggested they were part of the Madchester Scene meaning they must be in their mid-thirties or over at least, so they would have been older than me for example, and some of the others who have defended Oasis who were part of that scene, a good seven or eight years later.
It would all come down to generation preference I suppose.

I'll look forward to it.. I might even get you a pint of Fosters in.. I can't get fairer than that..

;)

Madchester peaked in 1990.. you youngsters missed it.. trust me..

I didn't think Stone Roses were part of Madchester? I thought that was more Factory and the Hacienda.

Stone Roses were much better than Oasis, imo, if only for the first album and Fool's Gold.

Strangely enough, no-one drinks Fosters in Australia and you'd be hard pressed to find any boozer where they serve it. We also don’t drink XXXX almost anywhere in New South Wales, and they don’t in Victoria or South Australia, it's mainly in Queensland and the Northern Territory where they do.
Bit of trivia for you.....

What do you drink in Oz then?

What do you drink in Oz then?

Aside from kangaroo piss you mean?
Well, there’s several local beers which are worth it, although from state to state, the mainstream changes. Down in Victoria, they have a beer called Victoria Bitter, or VB for short, which isn’t a bitter at all, it’s a lager and I don’t like it, but it’s probably the most popular beer in Oz. they also have a brand called Carlton with several varieties of which Carlton Draught is pretty nice. Up here in NSW, Tooheys are the main brewery with Tooheys New a pretty good draught beer, whilst they have Tooheys Extra Dry in bottles which is pretty good.
In recent years, loads of smaller independent breweries have popped up with several types of ale, with the European style of lager, pilsner and the like getting very common.
Lads like Wibble likes his twat’s beer (sorry Wib!) such as Bluetongue and a few others from memory in another discussion we had a bit ago, plus there’s Cascade and James Boags which are popular on the boutique style of bar which are common in Sydney.
I’m more of a traditionalist and much prefer a normal straight beer in a schooner glass, not twatty drinks in a fancy bottle for me….

Well, directly, yes, in terms of active involvement in the "brand". But the Roses were clearly very closely associated - same city, same time, same attitiude, many similar musical ideas.
