Internationals October (Nations League + Euro 2021 play-offs + Friendlies)

Is it not a typical 3-5-2 side? No Kane so DCL starts. No Sterling so Rashford starts.
Mount is the most strange pick. Grealish deserved to start or Sancho.
You dont need rice and henderson in a 3 5 2. It should be either or

Mount will be playing behind the 2 strikers won't he, rather than on the right?

You must play 4-3-3 (with two attacking midfielders) with Kane, Sterling, Rashford, Sancho, Greenwood, Ings & Calvert-Lewin as forward options and Grealish, Foden, Barkley, Mount, Maddison & Alli as attacking midfield options.

That is not the best balance though. Just like it is not for us with Pogba and Bruno. They also got many attacking fullbacks. Against weak teams in qualifiers it may work, but not against the best teams.

What’s Southgate obsession with Trippier. He’s like the first name on team sheet every time.

Pretty sure he wasn't called up for a while after 2018 world cup when he was one of England's best players. Been pretty good in his 18 months at Atletico Madrid so don't see the issue although where he's actually playing today is anyone's guess!

Why?

Do you expect that he chooses the players after consulting you?

He should. Might win something. But seriously, he is making international football look a lot harder than it needs to with the talent at his disposal. Squad wise that is a top 3 side in World Football.

Harsh to lump Seaman in with that lot, he played for England for a couple of years after Ronaldinho's fluke.

Indeed. Did concede a goal direct from a corner against Macedonia after it. I always felt the media were too harsh on him.

True but "big name" coaches like Capello and Eriksson had decent squads too and didn't achieve anything.
The talent available for the English national team coach is relevant to a certain point. English players often underperformed at National team levels.
Southgate style might be boring but he achieved more than many before him.

Our only chance to win a tournament is with our attacking players and the other teams in the knock-out stages will have much more respect if we win for example our group stage matches 4-1 against Croatia, 5-0 against Scotland/Serbia and 4-0 against Czech Republic.

Sven did well but lacked that extra bit of balls to make those calls which could have made that England side a world beater. In his defence he managed in a much tougher international era.

Capello was past it but the squad at his disposal was poor and one of the weakest (most of the big names were physically diminished at this stage).

Gareth did well at World Cup when talent was not as strong - the workmanlike approach worked but now we’re beginning to see his limitations now the squad is much more talented and needs a more forward thinking coach.

That's also what they said about Deschamps prior to France winning the world cup.

A skilful player like Grealish left out of an England side? The more things change, the more they stay the same. Probably does not run enough or something.

He should have been one of the first names on the team sheet. To make it even worse he will probably come on as 3rd sub in the 83rd minute.

If Southgate is going to continue with the 343, then I would like to see Shaw as the left-sided centre back, who, in my opinion, has been really good when playing there for us.

It might sound good in theory, but most of the past winners have been fairly defensive in the balance. You have to go a long way back to find very attacking sides getting a world cup. I guess Germany is the closest example, but they still used Kroos as a 10 with two more defensive midfielders behind him and Özil on the wing.

Grealish, Coady and Sancho are better than the starters

It's about balance, though. Better players don't always guarantee that. Having said that, I too was quite surprised that I didn't see the players you mentioned, but Southgate obviously sees it as something different.

From England's point of view, it's great to have so many options.

I’m not sure I would call this team balanced. Three right backs on the pitch, Coady dropped in CB for a midfielder. Bizarre lineup once again from Faudgate.

Maybe Southgate see’s set pieces as the best chance to get a goal.

Expect a very boring game, that’s of course if England don’t get tanked..

1-0 England..

Pope
TAA Coady Mings Saka
Rice Phillips
Sancho Grealish Rashford
DCL

Play your form and top players ffs. I’m honestly Southgate out now. Hope he and England wins tonight but I just don’t rate him.

Grealish doesnt play through the middle

Back to two defensive-midfielders again. Southgate is just too boring for words. Grealish should be ahead of Mount; he is a better player. But no, he had to use him in a friendly against Wales instead.

The pairing of Rice and Henderson has not worked once, so I don't get his obsession with it. In fact, it has been awful every single time. Having no creative midfielder is a bad decision.

If he continues with this, I don't think we are going to have a long tournament.

AWB should reconsider his international allegiances. Southgate is trying to play as many RBs as possible in an 11, so he has a chance!

Bookmakers are giving 2/1 on Belgium that’s a great price

Coady in a 2 man defense wouldn't be ideal...but if we're playing a 3 like today he should definitely be playing.

No matter how many attacking creative players England develop Southgate and co. always revert back to these chicken shite tactics.

I kinda missed Roberto Martinez’s gesticulating outstretched hand bullshit management style on the touchlines...

Fully agree that he’s better in a 3 and should be playing today, but at the end of the day he’s a good defender, certainly better than Maguire, Dier or Walker. Walker isn’t even a CB.
