With all these players on unbreakable contracts making huge wages is it time to change the contracts that we offer players.
Unless you are an A* player contracts for the youth coming through or transfers in from Southampton or Crystal Palace or wherever should get 18 month contracts with the club's option to extend for a year at a time, and a modest fee going to the player for the exercise of that option.
With regard to salary if you have joined and are not a proven world class player the salary will be the same or marginally more than you were making before at your old club or in the youth team, but if you play for the first team you get the average wage of the first team for that week, and if you get on the bench for the first team you get a percentage, say 60%, of the average first team pay for that week.
Paying average players a fortune for not playing isn't sustainable financially and blocks progress either internally from the youth or our ability to try a better player. Come for 18 months on modest money, prove yourself or move on, and we will give someone else a shot is a system I would like to see is more aligned to.
