Either asked not to play in WBA's last game or refused to. Isn't/wasn't he the captain?
Probably already off somewhere and new club doesn't want him to get injured.

As for op, no. Some of you are forgetting how dreadful he can be.

Do we need another pisshead in the squad so soon after getting rid of Rooney? Sneaking out of the team hotel and stealing a taxi is not the look United want to be going with.

I like Johnny, but at this stage I'd say no. Such an underrated player with the ball at his feet. I think the one issue I always had with him, was he lacked a bit of strength at times, but that's true of many defenders these days. I'd like to see Johnny go somewhere where he'll play a lot of football at this stage of his career. Had some spells with us where he wasn't great, seemed to be a very confidence based player, but when he was on he had some stellar games for us particularly during the spell where we broke the clean sheet record, he and Vidic were immense in that period.Good luck to him, met him quite a few times in private and a genuine sound bloke.

Wouldn't mind bringing in Alderweireld and Evans and letting go of Rojo and Jones. That would improve our starting lineup massively and give us a better, more reliable backup. If the 3mil price is accurate it'd be a smart move.
I think we should keep Jones.Regardless of what anyone says about the lad,he's a very good defender.Hes still reasonably young and his best years are ahead of him....I would definitely not sell Jones....Would rather sell Smalling than Jones...

Jones can't seem to get over his injury problems and I don't expect that to change any time soon. It doesn't really matter how good he is/can be if he's not available to play.

There's a reason he's available for only 3M
When he signed for West brom he specifically got a clause inserted into his contract which said that if the team got relegated, then he would be allowed to leave for 3million...He didn't want to sign for West brom without this clause...City were willing to pay 25 million plus for him last January...

He's a great back up for a top 4 team(we have 3 or 4 CB on that level) but not a starter for a top 4 team.

Indeed. I thought he’d be a big hit under LvG, and was desperately disappointed when he started out under him playing so badly, culminating in the MK Dons debacle.

He made his way back into the side later on that season when we had the usual defensive injury crisis, and he played well. He then got a retrospective ban for spitting in the vague direction of a Newcastle player, which was the final straw.

For an apparently decent and intelligent bloke, he has got a history of being an idiot. Fined and dropped by Fergie for breaking a curfew, helping himself to a taxi in Barcelona. A shame, really. Maybe he lacks the self-discipline to be a really top pro.

Yeah. Coz like that time we signed Roy Keane was a complete disaster.
Roy Keane was a young, up and coming player, playing for a lesser side.
You cannot begin to compare Keane with Jonny Evans, who already had a chance at MUFC and failed to make impact.

Not by much and when you take into account injuries then not sure he’s more valuable as a player (not meaning price). Rojo Lindelof Blind are not better than Evans but Jones as you say (when fit) and Smalling are at least on par if not slightly better but not a great deal in it. I’d happily shift out Rojo or Blind for Johnny at that price but at the same time I’d rather promote a TFM or Tunzabe. Lindelof I’m not convinced but can see the merit of another season but he has to step up and learn to defend better (basics).

Is there any point shipping out Rojo or Linedlöf for a defender on the same level? Evans isn't that good, certainly not for us. He's a midtable defender at best now. If we're shipping out a centre back we should be signing a better player, not side stepping.

Evans was also injured a LOT when he was here, so you can't use the "Jones is injury prone" thing. Evans isn't much better in that regard. Smalling is much better than Evans at defending.

Evans is better than both on the ball, but he's also very susceptible to complete and utter feck ups.

I was never a big Evans fan but from his time here but if he’s going to be cheaper than Blind or Rojo then I’m all for it as he’s better, homegrown and a United boy. But as said I’d rather see Tunzabe or TFM promoted than buying Johnny. Evans was more available than Jones without doubt to be fair to him there.

Will he be cheaper than either of them? I very much doubt it. He's probably on a big enough wage at WBA plus the purchase price. I just see absolutely no benefit for us buying another sub par defender.

He should go to Everton, though if they're looking for top 6 again they should have their sights set higher.

In the 5 years they were at United at the same time Jones played more.

Totally agree but was trying to say (maybe not greatly) that if we are looking for a cheaper option (budget whatever) then I’d rather have him and sell Blind and Rojo. I’m sure we’d make on the transfer and I’d be surprised if wages are not roughly par with Blind or Rojo. Wouldn’t be disappointed but agree ww need a first choice centre back and Evans is not this.

I can definitely see where you're coming from. I just can't agree. I would be bitterly disappointed if we sold Rojo or Blind and replaced them with Evans. I'd rather us use that money to sign a top centre back and a leader rather than someone who will just add to the numbers.

Not this again. A bumped post out of context, read the thread. Point being made, not just by me, is that it’s silly to write off relegated players.

Evans is a good defender, but we definitely have more pressing needs (even considering the low price) and we already have too many CB/CB-candidates as it is. We're already looking at Alderweireld, who is a much better defender & much better on the ball, so getting Evans would be rather redundant. Plumping for Evans instead of Alderweireld would be Arsene-esque, going cheap for a decent ball-playing defender when the team is screaming for a top class player.

Evans would be much better off playing for a non-top 5 team, like Arsenal. I'm a bit surprised he hasn't been linked to them, as I can see him getting them back into the CL picture. I can understand the City rumors, but he'd basically be Stones backup, who is already 4th in the City CB hierarchy.

he didn't fail to make an impact. He was immense during that clean sheet record run we had back in 09. He was a very useful squad member. 2011-2012 season when city beat us goal diff, he made 29 appearances for us in the league.2012-2013 season which we won the league, he made 23 appearances for us in the league. I don't want him back at Utd at this stage of his career but to say he didn't make an impact is wrong.

He will be a very very good buy for Arsenal. Arsenal always shops for bargain, and we need CBs with experience.

Definitely overrated but at his best he's a competant, decent CB. Nothing outstanding and can lose battles but not bad, except in his final season for us

At the very best he's a slight upgrade on Rojo but he hasn't looked remarkable in a omni-shambles West Brom team and he's 30 so i'd steer well clear.

Assuming their transfer budget is true, Arsenal should do everything to get him. And he would be decent there imo.

I’m not advocating buying Evans, I think he’s had his time here and we should move on.

However the ‘we shouldn’t buy players from a relegated team’ argument always gets on my tits. It’s just so lazy to say that because a team is relegated that the players must all be shit

Roy Keane
Scot Parker
DiCanio
Stuart Pearce
Nigel Clough
Juninho
Viduka
Kinkladze
Ravanelli

A list of players who could have done a job at United at various times. Obviously keane did go on to play for us and the most recent ones Robertson and Maguire from Hull would absolutely do a job right now

Agree, I think it would be a good signing for Arsenal. A top signing for a Europa League team, they need to rebuild their back 4 & he'd help with that progressive football that they want to play

apprently we (Leicester) have a deal agreed with Evans but his agent wants £4m, whilst i think his agent is taking the micky personally, £7m for a quality CB is a no brainer and we should just pay it
