Which makes it more amusing the ones on here laughing at us not beating Croatia because they are such a small country.

Oh and again it's a non-Englishman paying any attention to the English media. They are trash and everyone knows it! Why is rhis such a shock to you guys or matter so much this time aeound? They always do it every fecking time. Yet now it's a big problem?

I tells ya why. Bitterness at how far we got, that's why.
I'm adding white text though I really shouldn't need too haha.
That's the thing though, if there's been a change in the way non-English fans have reacted in this tournament then I think it's been a lessening of criticism. I mean the English media were constantly criticised throughout the supposed "Golden Generation" and the glee that greeted England's loss against Croatia is a fraction of what it was on previous occasions (the loss against Iceland being the highlight).

Whereas this time the England team recieved positive praise and coverage for most of the tournament, in spite of whatever the English media was doing.

If there's been any change it's been in the way England fans have reacted, I think. On previous occasions ye didn't pay anywhere near as much attention to the sniping from outside England.

Not doubting there are 'sensitive' England fans, won't the thread size be due to there being loads more English than say Spanish or Portuguese on here?
I think it might have something to do with England fans being taken aback at the 'Arrogant Label'. But I think this was most because we didn't realise that Non-England fans took our media that seriously. Talking your team up as a fan should be normal behaviour!

I'm not sure I get the Ironic excuse of the Three Lions Song unless we're saying that we only hope that we'll win because it's not exclusively about the WC or the Euros but both.

In any case we deserve all the kicking we get.

For the 99th time - no it wasn’t.

You realise that the song was rehashed for the 1998 WC don’t you? That was in France (not England) - it was a pi$$ take then as well.

No-one in the UK listeners to our media or newspapers - if you do, then more fool you.
Well, yes it was, but we'll agree to disagree.

But it wasn’t just the media, it was the fans / public as well. In fact the media only jumped on it because of the fans.

I've actually come to enjoy our crap media over the World Cup, because it doesn't bother me since I don't watch it, yet people from Ireland/Scotland and overseas cant help but watch and get upset by it
We definitely do! Laughing at over teams is all part of the fun, and laughing at England is always funny no matter which side of the fence you're on.
Still coming home In 2022 though obviously.

I don’t buy people saying it was all just a big laugh or a joke. The many, many people I saw jumping on the bandwagon certainly weren’t doing it in an ironic way it’s because they genuinely thought it would happen. Then afterwards they were genuinely disappointed.

I am genuinely beginning to feel sorry for those people who have no choice other than our media but if you have your own media then what the feck were you doing paying any attention at ours ya daft knobs? If I had my way I'd never have to listen to Rio holding forth again though!

Home. C'mon.

I'd feel sorry as well for the British who have to watch, only they come on here crying that Lineker said it's coming home again which is hilarious
Won't somebody think about the poor Croatians!

Of course you believe you can. You say it, you hope it, you want to believe it. Genuinely. You ain't going to say we're going to lose this next one in public are you? You wouldn't be a fan.

 My wife did too. Hahaha
From my point of view I work in a betting shop and tbh people are generally quite vocal in their cynicism towards England. I felt that shift quite noticeably over the last month.

Before the Croatia game I overheard many customers and spoke to quite a few that thought Croatia were a nothing team and “footballs coming home”

Whether that says more about the actual football knowledge of people or them genuinely just being arrogant about England I am not sure.

People that said that definitely deserve the piss taking and the rest of us by association, that's just the way it goes.

We’ve had probably five or six threads of this type in the World Cup to date, poking fun at various countries, and the English fans are far and away the most sensitive we’ve come across. The fact this thread is almost SIXTY pages long and you lot are still bitching and moaning is beyond belief.
And look how quickly those threads were forgotten and yet here you all still are baiting the English on a website dedicated to an English team. Pretty sad and pathetic really.

You can't have a let's all laugh at England thread then wgen we all join in with the fun claim we care though.

It's utter nonsense to use this place as a gauge for that full stop. Go to a bayern forum and post the German version and it'll be the same thing

Why so sensitive? The other home nations have been mocked plenty in this thread and I don’t give a feck, it’s just a laugh

 We started watching the WC when it started in Italy. Brilliant choice of coverage with one channel no comment, another straight comment and a third adding sound effects depending on the action. So much better then anything back home. I think just listening to the crowd noise was best!

We've a whole ground floor that needs developing, could be a nice apartment... ;)

Nice! I'm looking forward to the day I can mute commentators but not the sound from the games.

Also, I couldn't handle the warmth in Italy or England.

Who's getting sensitive now?

You people genuinely make me laugh sometimes

You literally only have to look a few posts up. It’s a thread dedicated to joking at England’s expense yet people are getting upset over it. I disagree with those calling the English fans arrogant, that’s well off the mark imo, but for all this talk of self deprecating humour there’s not been much of in this thread.

And look how quickly those threads were forgotten and yet here you all still are baiting the English on a website dedicated to an English team. Pretty sad and pathetic really.

It's hilarious that the ABEs were horrified that we felt more confident with the draw we got, stating how disrespectful it was for us to think so, and yet repeatedly beat us with the stick that we only got where we were because we had an easy draw. Make your bloody mind up!

Those calling the England fans arrogant were well off the mark, there’s nothing wrong about being confident in your team and expecting them to win

I find it more funny that they only cared because we actually progressed for once and people got a little scared we could of actually had a flukey chance at winning it.

The bitterness that came from that has been so much fun

Don’t get me wrong I do think a lot of the oppos are wrong when they call the English fans arrogant, I find that very far from the truth, it’s been the opposite in my experience. At least you can take it.

Spot on. Now that they've come home empty-handed it's all gone back to being 'a joke' and 'ironic' again - the double standards are hilarious

I was at the airport the day before the Croatia game and the number of people singing 'its coming home', the number of posts on social media, and the most telling fact: not a single pundit/ analyst gave Croatia a chance - from Lawro to Rio to Lineker. Everyone was looking at the final and downplaying tiny Croatia. But yeah of course all of that was tongue-in-cheek and it's all back to being a bit of banter which was never serious in the first place.

We can be right pricks though, no two ways about it.

United fans have always been called arrogant too mind, so there's a certain irony in those claims ;)
No worse than any other fans though, and I agree with your point about all countries media being the same when they hype up their home nation, it was the same at Euro 2016 with the Welsh pundits.

When you look at the stats it's like Big Sam never left. Set piece specialists, zero creativity and barely a shot on target in open play per 90 minutes.

Progress.

It wasn’t the most stylish but I think progress has been made. Won a penalty shootout, won a few knockout rounds. Plus it’s a relatively young team so the future does look somewhat bright, especially with the success of the English youth teams

Sounds like Utd to be honest. Now if only Utd were as good at set pieces as England

We've just come back off one of our highest scoring campaigns since SAF left. Give it a rest and stop turning unrelated threads into a moan about United.

And England have just scored more in this World Cup than they have in the past 5 or 6. It was a joke, jeez. You won’t here me complaining about how United play!

It was tongue-in-cheek but in all honesty they were tactically naive and found out when they played quality teams. They got fortunate that the usual big hitters didn't perform otherwise they would have likely gone home early like they always do and the media and fans would have been on their backs. The easy run has somewhat papered over the cracks.

I was frustrated for them because Croatia were there for the taking but Southgate had no answer when they took control of the game and started dominating the midfield. Persisting with Alli and Lingard in midfield against Modric, Rakatic and Brozovic was laughable.

Seemed that with Croatia panic set in, first time during the tournament and after Croatia scored we stopped trying to build up from the back and keep possession to draw a team on we started hoofing. Southgate maybe didn't set this right during half-time. We were definitely playing a team that wouldn't let us settle.
