Absolutely THIS!!!!!!!

I cannot believe what I'm reading in this thread. Standard have definitely dropped SHARPLY if we're now trying to justify and find top 4 acceptable, especially after such failures throughout the whole season.

This season has been a wreck, complete mess. We went out in the group stage in the CL in a very easy group, play abysmal football throughout the entire season, had runs of 3 or 4 consecutive games losing etc. This is why It's a must to get rid of rotten things out and take action as soon as possible when things are going south otherwise people start sleeping their standards and find way to justify even the worse of things out there.

People standards are dropping further and further as we go along. It was all about targeting the league and challenging for it, having a decent run in the CL and play decent football. These were the targets beginning of the season both fans, players, LVG and everyone United involved were eyeing. Then came the pathetic runs of defeats we had and suddenly standards started sleeping to what we have now which is scrapping top 4 after an horrific season being acceptable.

We should have gotten rid of LVG a long time ago when people still had reasonable standard for a club our size. Now people are just a bunch of defeatist and hold ridiculously low standards and somehow convinced themselves it's normal
Thanks for the info. No one has dropped their standards. As of today, the cup win and 4th place is the best we can hope for right now, regardless of our standards, unless you can find a way of achieving more before the season ends?

That's the "Moyes So Far" thread.

    Will this thread top it?
I'll say yes, based on my assumption that LvG will carry on. Meaning this thread will last up to another 12 months.

A mod might lock it and start a new one though, so there's always that

Well, we've become more of a counterattacking team in the last few months so there's that. But I was talking more in line of selling player before you bring replacements in and general squad planning. I hope he rectifies our shocking lack of depth in attack.
If he stays(you or I don't have control over it). We just have to hope he has learnt some lessons from this season.
I have my doubts. This is a guy who wastes half a season implementing bad ideas and running with them until he's at a point of no return. We all remember the 3-5-2 which was abysmal until we dropped it around late November despite evidence in some 2 or so games before then that we played better and the players are better in a back 4. He also wasted half a season with Rooney as leading man and it took an injury to Rooney to force his hand with Rashford. There's at least another 3 or 4 other choices he does not want to learn from.

I'm all for new ideas and experimentation in management but part of being a manager is knowing when your idea has failed or does not have the necessary buy-in from your subordinates and then scrapping it and moving on to other ideas. I feel his ego is in the way of these changes and if so, and at his age he wont change. Why would he need to self-improve anyway, this is his last job. His legacy has already been written.

I don't think that people find it acceptable. If we win the F.A. Cup it is something we haven't won for ages and some of these players need to taste victory and winning a trophy to make them want even more. The stuff about Top 4, no it isn't acceptable, but if they have sense and make a change of manager it will give him a head start, to recruit better players to improve the team, it is a bargaining chip with players. Should we have finished higher, of course we should. We should have been challenging for the title in this year especially. For that I blame the manager.

We will see just how ruthless Woodward is if we make top four and win the FA Cup.

If he gets the 4th place + the fa cup he deserves to stay.

The best you can do with these players

For the transfers I blame Woody and the staff more than him.

Trophy would be nice but it's the same majority of players he authorised and signed by himself. Not saying his transfers were completely missed but as a manager he's also responsible for personnel choices.

Woody is a goof ball but still he provided needed resources even when it wasn't enough to build a team that would compete in CL... I think I agree with you on this. He also needs to improve but that's when the sport director could come in and organize things better. I'm just not so sure if LvG would like that at all.

Looking at the best, worst and likely outcomes of this season:

Best: 4th spot, FA cup winners.

Worst: 5th spot (I know 6th is mathmatically still possible but highly unlikely now), FA cup runners up

Likely: 5th spot and FA cup winners.

Looking at the season upon reflection you have to say that even the worst outcome is progress from when LVG took over. Maybe we're being a little harsh?
I assume you are playing devils advocate.

Moyes is a shit benchmark.

Van Gaal has made more in purchases in under 2 years than Leicester in their entire football existence.

Let's hold fire on the building of a bronze Van Gaal statue

Leicester won the league.

I was thinking the same thing that he may well deserve to stay. But look at the teams around us. Arsenal.

The fans are split, many want Wenger out. A guy who's done more for their club than LvG will ever do for us.

Man City. Pell' is off anyway, but even if this wasn't the case, sure he'd be sacked for a failed title attempt the League Cup, and the CL semi finals.

Are both of these teams so much better than us, that we can be happy with this season, while fans of these teams are not happy?

Wow, two places improvement 2 years after our worst manager ever and 250 million later, playing terrible football. We are definitely too harsh on van Gaal.

I think if he gets 4th and wins FA Cup, it should be dependent on players. If they are happy to play under him- especially guys like DDG, Smalling, Martial, then let him stay for another year. At the end its the players who are directly being affected if we change manager, and while most wanted a good cup run and 3rd in PL, F Cup win with 4th isn't that bad

Yes. At this point in time we do not have any attacking players of the quality Silva, Aguero, Ozil and Sanchez in our selection. We have players who can get to that level (Martial, Rashford, Shaw), but they are inconsistent and need 2-4 years before they hit their peak and are world class.

Will you lot accept a third year of van Gaal if the guaranteed top 4 and FA Cup is offered to you right now?
No. Should have been sacked months ago. Needs to be sacked the minute the season ends.

If we come top 4 (still skeptical) and win the cup, IMO he would have earned the right to see his final season out.
I am taking the fact that the squad was paper thin before he season started(I know that's his fault) and the truly abominable injury situation at times.
It would be a pretty decent turnaround. Mid January after we lost to Norwich, I thought our season was going completely into the gutter, heading for mid table and was desperate for the club to do something, even though I didn't know what they should have done. We had something daft like 1 win in 10 at that point.

If he does stay as I think he will if we achieve those things, I hope he's learnt some big lessons.
I don't think that would be fair. Getting 4th place or the FA cup or missing out can be a matter of luck.

Being given another year should'nt be a ''reward'' for what he can or cannot achieve this season, it's more about what he's shown he can achieve in the next. It's not even about what he can do long term, as he only has one year on his contract and is planning to retire anyway.

Would you expect him to sign better players than he has, get better results and change the playing style next season ?

How the feck is Woodward blamed for transfers?

Van Gaal identifies the players and sold the players. So how exactly is Woodward to blame?

Apart from Blind, LVGs signings "his recommendations" have probably been the worst.

Rojo Bastian Memphis.

Also the decision to keep Rooney as no1 striker I believe is his call too

So you're blaming Woodward for not telling LVG that his transfer plans sucked? Otherwise I'm not sure what he's to blame for.

Oh wow, I must hurry and get a ticket or they'll all be gone.

Oh, by the way, I was being sarcastic.

I call bullshit, as of last week you can easily call up and buy 2 season tickets in most stands without having to join the "waiting list"

Leicester City won the league after barely surviving relegation last year. Their team is not full of world class players.

Well no snatching fourth wouldn't be progress of a sort but it's a hardly a complete failure. And nowhere near enough to warrant getting rig your long term plan(we are one game away from a trophy, something this club hasn't had in the last two years),
My point is that if United are sticking to this long term plan of Giggs becoming the manager then this season is just another stepping stone to that end goal. Not saying I agree with it but there is sense to it.
/QUOTE]

It's not a completely failure, but it's not a good season. Mind you, with that logic we could keep him even if he finishes fifth. If fourth is good enough for our grand scheme, then missing it by a couple pf points shouldn't be that much of an issue....

I'd say this, though, if someone at United has indeed decided Giggs it to become the next manager, then they may well be silly enough to keep Van Gaal as well.

Scare tactic, you meant? So the higher up tried to trick people into buying with fake news?
Could be. It is weird how things seem to have changed in a week. Did everyone apply last night as soon as City dropped points and we might just get CL football? Someone is telling fibs somewhere?

Could be. I just read a comment from a season ticket holder saying United has called him 3 times in 11 days and each time he told them he's not renewing unless Mourinho is hired:lol:

Read the comments below on that page...twitter followers are stating that there is no waiting list and that ticket sales are very slow.
So United are taking the piss? So funny!

No, in fact I'll be cheering for West Ham and Palace if it guarantees his departure should we fail to achieve those 2 things.

My hope is that we can get top four and win the cup and in the process convince the board to keep him and indeed convince himself he wants to be here next season. Think it's pretty unlikely though. Not sure we'll beat West Ham, suspect the board have already made agreements with Jose that whilst not legally binding they'd wish to stick to and I think he may have already made up his own mind that he doesn't wish to be here.

I think we could go in to next season with decent confidence, if we manage to come away with Champions League qualification and the FA cup, considering how bad things were going at one point and considering the role the younger players have had in getting us to the stage we are now with a chance of both.
