United extend Valencia contract by one year

Manchester United have confirmed a clause has been triggered to extend Antonio Valencia’s contract by one year, keeping the experienced Ecuadorian at Old Trafford until at least June 2018.

Valencia has made 271 appearances, scored 21 goals and won six trophies since joining from Wigan Athletic in 2009. He also claimed a hat-trick of individual awards in the 2011/12 season when voted the Fans’ and Players’ Player of the Year, while also winning the club’s Goal of the Season prize.

The 31-year-old has become a vital member of Jose Mourinho’s team by starting 23 matches in all competitions this campaign, enhancing his reputation as one of the finest right-backs around. In recognition of his top form, he was even voted United’s Player of the Month for November by the fans.

Valencia is currently in his eighth season as a Red and this one-year contract extension will take him to the end of the 2017/18 campaign. Using his official Twitter account, Antonio posted: "Another year to give everything for the greatest club in the world @ManUtd. Happy to announce I’ve renew my contract 'til 2018."

I'm not sure I'm experiencing more than 'quite pleased' but then I am a grumpy sod.

For 16m he's been a great servant. Value in the market.

Good servant and does everything he's been asked. With that said, I feel like he should be a rotation option if we are to challenge for top honours again.

Been a brilliant signing, makes the reaction from the resident experts on his arrival all the funnier.

In fact Valencia is one of the best in his position in the world whether his critics want to admit it or not.
Only in the caf would you ever read something as absurd as this. This isn't the thread for discussing alternatives or comparisons but I will just disagree on that statement.

The sliding tackle on Firminio back in October is worth one year contract alone.

Best right back in the league. Always knew he had it in him.

Been good this season so I have no issues with him signing a new contract, need to look at replacing him in the summer though.

Thats becauase they arent many. People just love throwing around random names they have heard on computer games.

Valencia has been a great RB. And its not just this season either. Some people just cant get over the fact that he was once a winger. He's seen off Darmian, Rafael and Varela in the position.

Injury aside, he's one of the few that will likely be starting next season too. But I can see us signing some sort of deputy. Darmian isnt up to scratch in that position.
He'll be 32 come start of next season, he's reliable but really we don't want to be scratching our heads in another two years looking to replace him like we are with Carrick. Sooner the better really.

I'm not looking for a muppet signing, I just feel that we need specialists in every position if we are looking to challenge the barcas and the bayerns. You could say that we have higher priorities at the moment, but it is a position that could be upgraded. I have no issue whatosever in extending his contract, he is useful and a very good professional.

I dont think just because he is above 30 he will go into steep decline. Look at Zlatan. I can see him doing well for at least 2 more seasons. But thats why I would rather sign a young deputy and build from there.

And Valencia is a specialist too. He is a RB for us.

No one calls Bastian a winger either. They both changed positions permanantly. Valencia has been playing this position full time since 2014.
