I'm not looking for a muppet signing, I just feel that we need specialists in every position if we are looking to challenge the barcas and the bayerns. You could say that we have higher priorities at the moment, but it is a position that could be upgraded. I have no issue whatosever in extending his contract, he is useful and a very good professional.
Barca are most likely delighted if they can have Valencia as their right back right now. He's been our best or at least in top 3 and most consistent player this season. Definitely in the top 3 list best right backs in the league.

Like Fellaini I'm indifferent.

If Valencia could cross he'd be a good player.

I used to hate him, thought he was a liability at RB (funny given that he isn't actually a RB) but he has improved MASSIVELY. Fair play to him, contract well and truly deserved

Better reception than last time he was given a contract that's for sure

I doubt him signing a new contract means he's going to be here long term. It just puts us in a better bargaining position when we do move him on. I didn't want him sold thise summer anyway as we are likely to be making an awful lot of changes as it is and as annoying as he can be at times, I don't think he should be one of our immediate priorities to move on.
Thankfully my post in that thread wasn't too embarrassing!

I did think he would move on over the longer term but now I'm just glad his form his form is much improved. RB hasn't been an immediate concern at all this season.

He's been good this season but to be honest, I was hoping we would sign a natural RB in the summer.

Just like Mascerhano is a specialist centre back.

Sums up my thoughts on him. I wanted him out the season van Gaal came in. He was a liability during the Moyes season, this after 2 seasons of woeful attacking play too. Credit to him, he's obviously accepted his new role and worked hard to learn more about the defensive side of the game. He rarely gets caught out now and controls the entire right side for us at times.

There's no such thing as a 'specialist' though. Just most players play best in certain positions, or with certain instructions. Tony V plays best as a full back with a massive emphasis on attacking. That's as much as a 'specialist' as you're going to find.

Kilbane said that Valencia would "come in with a smile on his face every day." Are we sure he's on about the right player?

No other right back in the world could put in the performances he's done this season. Not saying he is the best, but in terms of his fitness, pace, strength, and ability to own the entire right flank of the pitch.... nobody can match that. He's been amazing all season and probably leading the way for player of the season so far. Tight between him and Ibra I think. But he is without a doubt a brillaint player and I'm glad we stuck with him through the few rough years he had.

He has grown into his role really well for us this season, glad we've tied him down for a while.

We've scored plenty of goals from his crosses.

Which FB's in the premier league (or any league) are better at sending consistently good crosses into the box?
I remember reading in some match report after the Liverpool game that the assist to Zlatan was his first since May 2016.

26 years worth of debt!
He's been here for almost 8 years . I remember the pic of him, Obertan and Owen as if it was yesterday.

He's third in terms of seniority after Rooney and Carrick, if I am right.

Never have I gone back and forth on a player so much. There's been time when he was a great winger for us, and then I thought he became useless and could not see a way back him. Injuries and a lack of confidence seemed to ruin him. Initially the right back experiemnt looked incredibly dodgy too. But fair play, he's fought back and been very good this season in that role. This is well deserved as a result.

Brilliant. Now put in the hours in training and work on that crossing.

Good servant and does everything he's been asked. With that said, I feel like he should be a rotation option if we are to challenge for top honours again.
Valencia is a more of an attacking full back/wing back, so IMHO United should look for a more defensive minded fullback. With Tony on the right, I think the opponents have become more aware of the tactics which sees United switch to the right flank with Pogba's long passes. Still nice to see though. Waiting patiently for Mourinho's magic touches on Shaw, as he has done with Micky, Jones and Rojo so far.

Blind and Young for starters.

Good for him, been a rock this season but next season he should be rotataed with a new signing who will be our targeted first choice RB

I've spent the last two seasons moaning he wasn't good enough but he's been brilliant this season so happy to see the news.

He's been a great yet unglamorous signing for us really. Killed it on the wing for a few seasons and then when asked has retooled himself into a good right back. Great servant to the club

Love his character and he's got a great engine on him, but l think he is lacking in the final third. We've nicknamed him Shin Smasher where I sit, as he generally seems to hit low, hard crosses that hit the defender's shins. That and he still seems reluctant to beat his man. When he came break from the leg break, he was electric, but has regressed since then. Needs to not be afraid to kick the ball past the defender and chase it down.

Glad to see him stick around as he's our best full back currently, but he's not elite. It's still a relatively new position for him, so will get better with age hopefully.
