This game reminds me of everything wrong with United last year, no one across the midfield runs or passes forward, it's all slow & sideways.

This team is 3 pedigree signings from being anywhere near what we were under Fergie.

We need a top class centre back, but will end up with De Vrej, who is potential. A strong box to box midfielder, Vidal. And a winger who can run at pace and beat people, yet performs, Di Maria.

It doesn't matter who the manager is Trashley Young & Darren Feltcher need to go. The forward line looks like it's moving in treacle.

This isn't Manchester United. I pray Louis turfs half of this dross out.

Be interesting that. Young's generally looked better since Van Gaal came in. Not amazing, but better. Valencia was solid enough but his decision making is still sometimes suspect.
He was trying to interchange with the central players like Rooney and Mata to open up space which is refreshing. Usually he hammers a cross into the defender or passes it the the full back who now isn't there.

Remember how this time last year we were being outplayed for significant stretches of games by no-name opposition?
Yakohama F. Marinos are no-name opposition sir, they have won the J-league three times and they're the most successful club in that league as well.;)

I'm so confused reading the comments on here. Some saying we are playing good football, some saying we are shit, I even think I seen 1 comment saying all we are doing Is hoffing the ball forward? Haha guess I'll have to decide for myself when I finish work.

I don't understand his role at all. He doesn't even try to get past his man. All he has been doing is passing it back to infield. And I don't rate him at the back, commits too many fouls. I don't think he put in any cross today.
To be honest I would like to put my money on Coleman. But he just signed a new contract. He's a great one to have for wing back. Loves to attack and quick. And he is also a better right back than Valencia so if we convert into 4 in the back we don't have to worry about Coleman.

Young did better than Valencia did as a WB in the first half

though to be fair he wasn't tested as much

let's see how he does on the right in the second half

Wingbacks are move involved in this game, maybe LvG's instructions as in the first two games they were pretty isolated from the play and didn't really know if they should attack or defend more, which resulted in them just standing there static, doing feck all when we were in possession. Us lacking width is being addressed in this game. We'll look much better when Shaw and Rafael are fully fit though.

That passing move was just . Hope we see football like that all season...

Positives so far: Smalling playing very well, Fletcher looking fit and playing well and general shape of the team seems much better than V Roma.

Negatives so far: Valencia slowing down the play so much, and Jones isn't impressing much.

Never been an issue with their quality. Its the fact that come the start of the season 1 of them WILL be injured at all times.
Yeah, that's the problem. One comes back from injury, another one picks up one. Ad Rafael to that list.

But they've look good as a back-three anyway. Let's hope it continues.

Jones distribution is terrible. Really lacks composure in that system. I could see Shaw playing left side of a back 3. Young looks perfect for this system. Fletch has been great and Danny's gonna really push RVP for a starting position.

A system like anything simplifies the game and allows players to shine. You know your job which in turn eliminates doubt from your play, should I attack or defend now? This makes players be able to perfect their job and not take over other people role. For example Mata will be judged on his ability to create and score, not if he tracks back on the wing because that job falls to the wingback, you don't have to cover for other players mistakes as much because if they keep making mistakes as a CM for example, it wont be the defenders that get slated for not defending, LVG will no the root cause and replace the cm. This for me allows players to shine. Valencia has been great because he isn't a pure winger and he knows his job, he defends, wins balls and counters. With him being a wingback and not a winger he will typically receive the ball deeper which allows him to exploit his pace, rather then being stuck so far up.

It always highlights player weaknesses. Young hasn't been good and clearly isn't specialised as a wingback and as a result all our play has gone through Valencia and we look predictable and easy to defend. Our CM's aren't world beaters but they aren't getting streched or trying to cover 5 positions at once. They have a role and its when all these roles come together do you see a team peformance. Thats why I think with a system like this we are correct in not going for people like Fabregas because we didn't need him, what we actually need for this system to work is a topclass wingback (rafael could be good at this but he is always injured) and a CB to stop balls over the top.

I really love the fact we have a technical manager that recognises its not Matas job to play on the wing. If you are a #10 you fight for the #10 spot in his system, if you don't make the cut, you aren't playing because it is no good simply bashing a second number 10 on the wing to make him happy or because he can pass because he won't give the squad what it needs as a wingback and with then simultaneously make everyone job harder. This is why systems are a good think, they also allow for quicker more streamlined improvements as you always have the same base to build upon, already we are seeing our weaknessess in CB/Wingback and we haven't even played a competitive game. Under Moyes we never saw improvement as the system always changed.

De Vrij has signed for Lazio so we won't be getting him.

This is our first real test for how most teams will line up against us in the league. We need to be able to break teams down, that is how you win the league. The 5-3-2 is brilliant for cups or against big teams, but less so when we need to break down teams every week who happily sit back and take a point from United.

Herrera needs to do some strength work. Has a touch of class on the ball, but looks too susceptible to being bullied off of it by tougher opponents.

Think Van Gaal pinpointed it perfectly when he said we need "specialist" wing backs, in young and Valencia we have perhaps the most predictable, non-threatening potential candidates for WB.

Just can't stand seeing Valencia making his start and stop runs and smashing a sideways pass.
