So much for not raising our offer

I genuinely thought that maybe we'd get him for £55m guaranteed with no add-ons or something similar to only pay them a maximum of £55m
To be fair, £5m add-ons is feck all in the grand scheme of things. Seeing as amortisation is so in vogue these days - "DECLAN RICE ACTUALLY COSTS £20M" (per season for 5 years), any Arsenal fan - Mount for half the price with bits added on isn't too sloppy.

Saying that, I've now got to start liking him as I've always been fuming whenever he's started for England. Hopefully there's a Salah post-Chelsea style rebirth at United.

Disappointed we’ve caved and payed more than we said we would but happy we didn’t pay what Chelsea demanded and also the manager has got his first choice target. The most annoying part of all this is we’ve essentially funded their move for Caicedo who would’ve been an excellent addition to our squad.
Stop with this 'we funded Caicedo' shit, if they want Caicedo, they would have bought him even if Mount stayed.

15m too much and I personally have a bad feeling about this, but glad it's done and we can move on to next targets.

Couldn’t give a monkeys about the fee. I’m just pleased we’ve done something that resembles backing the manager.

Hopefully this works out.

I dont see the point. We have Eriksen and Bruno. Surely money need to go elsewhere?

I'm sure the structure was just adjusted to meet in the middle. Huge price, United tax is basically 15m for every transfer and that feels about the tax on this one given his contract situation, but anyway. He'll improve us loads IMO. On the ball not a big difference to Eriksen, mainly off the ball where I think he'll be closer to fred. So a Fred/Eriksen blend to start next to Bruno and Case. And a great age too. Something our midfield group was desperate for.

Eriksen as depth for Mount and Bruno is very nice too. Sort out what we do with McTominay/Fred, I'm comfortable keeping mctominay as Casemiros backup so that Mctom and Eriksen is the backup pair.

I like how the one year that midfield isn't our biggest priority, we sign a midfielder first.

Is midfield the new centre-back?

Ah, the classic "package deal" whereby every add-on is reported as if it's part of the guaranteed fee whenever United are involved. Nonetheless, I'm happy. Mount is a very good player.

A lot of money for Mount. Oh well, welcome!
Any good Chelsea chants for him we can copy?
Mount, Mount, Mount! or something like that?

Editing my own posts.
Depending on what the add ons actually are, we did pay what we said we would - £55m - so I don’t know why people are being so weird about it. It’s also how negotiating works.

Good player but £55m (forget that £5m in add ons. Its probably Ballon d'or or some something stupid) with less than one year left. Christ. Ten Hag cannot say he has not been backed.

Ornstein is comfortably the most reliable British football journalist, who’s next after him?
Covering all of football there definitely isn't anybody close.

Exclusively for United, probably Whitwell for breaking news and being reliable? Mitten is reliable but isn't a news breaker as such.

IF his contract wasn’t running out next summer - what do you think his value is?
Personally, I would say around £65m, which is what Arsenal paid for Havertz. In this current market, maybe £70m at a push is about as much as they would get.

We've hardly bent over backwards. Chelsea lowered their asking price a lot and we stuck to our guns.
Only to realise that 60m was the number Chelsea wanted from the beginning. You set a high unrealistic price on purpose so that you fall to the number you really wanted. A potential 60m for Mount with a year left is a great deal for Chelsea not us. When you negotiate your salary at work do you tell them the number you really want or do you start high?

I think this +5 nonsense is for Chelsea more than us, this is a £55mil deal in all but name imo.
Agreed. Ornstein says in the article that the +5 is difficult to achieve. Probably if we win the league/UCL, or something like that.

This is basically the compromise everyone said would happen. We didn't pay more than our last offer, technically, and Chelsea technically get closer to their valuation.

Everyone can say they won/saved face. As long as we get the player I don't care.

And then we'll be mystified when the next player we want to sign costs an extra £10m over what another club would pay for them.

They wanted £70m to begin with.

£70m+5m ish maybe? On the basis that Havertz went for £65m+5m?

But that's assuming they'd be as happy to let him go as the were Havertz, which in real terms they likely wouldn't be. If he wasn't on the last year of his contract I don't think anyone pays what it takes to sign him.

If Wan Bissaka can be coached to be the player he is today, I am excited to see how someone like Mount would turn out.

Welcome to United, Mason!

I hope Brighton cleans them up. Now let's move on and get rinsed by Inter for Onana:)

Was one of the most obvious deals to be done. Was never not joining Utd, was either going now or next summer. Always suspected a compromise to be reached.
