Spot on. If Chelsea had let it be known he was up for sale at 40 million, they'd be getting bids for 25.

Obviously the danger with originally asking for a very high price is that any potential buyer just fecks off.
Pretty much - a year left, guy hasn't played well for a while and he's been injured I don't think anyone at the club genuinely believes anyone will bid 80 especially with the likes of Caicedo potentially on the market. But you'd also be stupid not to start out high and bring the price down, as opposed to start out middling and bring the price down.

At the moment it doesn't seem like Chelsea have much of the power in the sense that it looks for all intents and purposes like Liverpool and Arsenal have moved on, which may have created more of a bidding war for a higher price and we seem to be the only club genuinely interested in him from reports. Considering who he is would you be happy with him gone for between 50-60? Say 55 land in the middle

Happy with this signing if it happens. Very good, hard working player with the kind of mentality we need

What a disappointment if we sign him. Just not good enough on the ball and positionally and not what we really need from a midfielder. More of the same, wasting a good chunk of money.

I have no issues with us buying Mount for a acceptable fee .. as long as we buy someone like Canceido too.

Most Chelsea fans I know really like him, they see a little bit of Lampard in him I guess its because he has been Chelsea's poster boy in recent years. Will you be gutted if he leaves?

Funding their Caicedo transfer by buying Mount would be another episode of United being the dumbest club in the transfer market.

I really wonder what are scouting does, it's as if we never have any leverage.

Always extremely confused with this kind of opinion. If he isn't what we really need from a midfielder why is ETH pushing so hard for him? You'd think ETH, as the manager of the team, would know what he wants and how he wants his midfield to setup more than any of us on an internet forum

We clearly need midfielders with clearly defined positions. Someone to create next to Casemiro or to be his understudy. Mount isn't this. Good player, but I don't get where he'd play for us.

He'd be an upgrade on mctominay/fred as a #8 bench player, but he can't create from deep and he can't control a midfield, and there's no way he'd be better than Bruno at #10. No way we should be paying more than 40mil.

If he’s as bad as you say, why pay any money at all for him?

The question is, does he improve the first XI? If he’s going to be playing no8, I think he does. Eriksen is, sad to say, on the decline.

I dont know what he has in mind, but me as an expert, cant see in any way Mount being a successful transfer.

ETH has some weird ideas sometimes. It is not like his transfers are 100%. What he saw in Weghorst and what he would bring to the team, only he knows.

You can clearly see the idea with every transfer. Even though Antony hasn't lived up to expectations, he hasn't been as bad as some make him out to be and we're much better in possession and defensively with him in the team. He always gets in dangerous positions. Just needs to work on shooting and his right foot.

Weghorst wasn't a transfer, but a loan. We needed a striker but Glazers didn't want to buy any so we had to get one that was available for loan.

I think Mount wouyld be a good transfer but for no more then £55m. None of this £70m nonsense. That was Ed Woodward United. 2023 United has to be smarter.

The problem is we probably will have to overpay for Mount. A fair price range for Mount with a year to go on his contract and a poor season last year would be £30-40m.

Every caf transfer thread in a nutshell right there.

There is no “fair” price, only the market price. That is the price at which the seller is willing to let him go and the highest bidder is willing to pay (subject to co-operation of the player).

Plenty of clubs will pay £30m but Chelsea would rather keep him at that price. At £40m they might let him go but there would probably be a few clubs willing to pay more.

Fairness doesn’t come into it unless you define fairness as all parties being willing.

You realise we're allowed to disagree with ETH, right? Not everything he says and does is right.

Disagreeing with Ten Hag is one thing. Stating that "Mount is not the midfielder we need" as a certain fact is another.
Why can we not state that? I don't think Mount is the midfielder we need, either. I want a controller in midfield. Mount isn't that.

That would be a very underwhelming transfer but I trust ETH that he has some genius idea how to convert Mount into a world beater.

Because what you want and what ends up being the best for the team are two different things, and because you don't know how it's going to work out. If we win the league next season after getting Mount and Kane in, and Mount was equally as instrumental to our play as he was for Chelsea when they won the CL, would he still be a midfielder we didn't need?

Imagine people on a forum having differing opinions, what a novelty.
There's differing opinions of thinking he's good or not thinking he's good, but there's also "I know better than the recruitment team and the manager, he's not what we need"

If we win the league next season, and Mount is a big reason why we did so, I would happily say I was wrong. The chances of that happening are slim to none.

I'd be extremely happy if we could manage to get top 4 next year. Chelsea and Tottenham with no European football plus Liverpool improving, it'll be very tough. Tougher if we're looking at the likes of Mount and Rabiot for improvement.

I agree. It's going to be much harder to compete next season. Those two players give me little confidence.

I don't think Tottenham will be anywhere near top 4. Kane is their only hope and him going away will weaken them too much.
Liverpool improving is too early to tell, imo. Salah is getting older and might not be as motivated next season as they're not in the CL.

Hopefully we will see some of our players improve next season, especially Antony. Getting a striker will do wonders for us as well.

Mount will be better than what Ericksen has been for us I feel.

I do not blame the fans though. We have been used to being a little team against big teams, to defend. So it's natural that people want some more of that. The small team mentality is wide spread in united fans. It's about how do you stop rather then how do you play. This is why people want Rice and etc DMs. Small club thinking is with a lot of fans.
FFS. None of the fans who say we have to sign Caicedo think he’d add more defensive steel. We have lost the ability to hold any sort of meaningful possession when faced against pressing teams. Caicedo would help with that by recycling possession intelligently. How many games have to dropped points against mid table teams because we couldn’t maintain possession in the final minutes? A midfielder like Caicedo would solve that. Mount would just add more chaos to our midfield.

I have absolutely no doubt about that. Eriksen is really good against weak teams who don't really threaten us and we can pin back, but against midfields who are tenacious and hard working and can actually pass, he struggles.

You make it sound like Mount can't pass, dribble or carry the ball.

We should probably all pack up and go home if we are not allowed to disagree with the recruitment team and the manager.

Are you saying that club recruitment team and managers never make the wrong decision?

I doubt anyone would have said he is what we need in midfield before we were linked with him.
I'm very very sceptical about this. For 30 mill ok but the money talked about is crazy

Caicedo’s main quality is his blend of physicality and basic technique. He’s a good athlete and a very promising CM and would cost a lot of money, for sure.

Regarding maintaining possession when being pressed late in games he is not going to be better than Mount. Regarding creating and scoring goals he is going to be worse than Mount. Good player though.

Mount has very good technique, is clever and can follow instructions. Chaos isn’t a word that springs to mind. I think you’re worrying about a problem that doesn’t exist.
