Renaming friendlies into Nation's league was genius though. It's a major international trophy now. That bald Blattery dude is a fecking genius.

Or is it the UEFA..
I'm on the same boat as you.

If England win it? Major international trophy. The start of our age of glory.

If we lose? Glorified friendly, lad.

It's genius. Either way I win.

Why are people even fans of players who don't play for their clubs? So fecking odd.

Like sure, I hero worshipped Bale. And then he left the football club I actually support so I no longer gave a feck about him.

He moved away from United like a decade ago, get over it.

edit: Who even cares who won a poll it's totally meaningless .
For me personally I was a kid when I started watching United in 03, the start of a couple of barren years for United. He then have us 3 leagues in a row and a CL title..

More importantly he used to be quite the flashy dribbler, and I spent many a day on the local pitch with mates practising his skills, so I always have good memories from that. It's like anything - boxers, tennis players, F1, you take a liking to characters, usually winners, and follow them.

Not too difficult to see why a lot of the support in this thread is split along United/Portugal Barca/Argentina lines, the players bring a lot of pride to each set of fans

There's players I like to watch and admire, but nowhere near to the extent that people rally around Messi/Ronaldo. Like some sort of cult.
I'd still rather watch Zidane in his prime than either Messi or Ronaldo.Waiting for the pitchforks

In the last 12 months, Cristiano has scored a hat-trick in the World Cup, Champions League and Nations League...whilst Messi scored a free kick against Liverpool in the semi and was pocketed for majority of the 2 legs.

One is a bottler at the big stages. The other is the most clutch big game player in the world. Levels

Should votes from members that are now banned be removed from the total numbers in the name of fairness? If so, I checked some members at random that voted on the poll and so far found 20 have been banned since voting, if you want to remove their votes. They all voted for Ronaldo BTW.

Such a shame that these last great 12 months for Cristiano won't get him his 6th Balon Dor. Levels

You’ve plucked out one performance. I want more.

He’s hardly been a GOAT consistently all season but suddenly a performance today and it’s “not for debate again”
Your right terrible season for Juve only 28 goals in 43 games ( all comps ) disastrous return for a player in a new team in a new lge in a new country !!!

Whilst Messi plays for his same damn team that is built around him whilst constantly being half the player for Argentina.

Ronaldo is consistent everywhere my guy goes to and tests himself out.

Oh, I never said he wasn’t the best player in 2019.

I just said he’s not going to win the Ballon d’Or, just as Ronaldo didn’t win it last year when he was the best player in the world :)

How that bad the guy won 5 ballon d'or aged 34 scored more goals then any of our centre forwards. greatest ever player to wear the Man Utd shirt since Best. Would rather have him up front then lukaku, Rashford, Sanchez, No man utd player can even match what he give a team when he playing.

Not even joe felix who had an awful game last night can match him if he worth 106 Million then Ronaldo worth 200M

Just found this. So epic! Close thread!

*Cristiano Ronaldo vs Leo Messi in court*
Judge: Have any of you won the Golden ball?
Ronaldo: Yes, 5 times.
Messi: Yes, 5 times as well.
Judge: Have any of you won the Golden Boot?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times.
Messi: Same here.
Judge: How many individual trophies have you each won?
Ronaldo: 16.
Messi: 13.
Judge: Have any of you played for another club’s first team besides your current one?
Ronaldo: Yes! Sporting CP in Portugal first division and Manchester United in BPL.
Messi: No! Only Barcelona.
Judge: Have any of you won a title with your national team?
Ronaldo: Yes! We won Portugal’s firstever European Championship.
Messi: No!
Judge: How many goals have each of you scored for your respective teams?
Ronaldo: Should I count the goals I’ve scored for Man United and Sporting?
Judge: No. Only for Real Madrid.
Ronaldo: 427 goals in 421 appearances or 9 seasons.
Messi: 534 goals in 617 appearances or 14 seasons.
Judge: Who has scored more hat- tricks in La Liga?
Ronaldo: Me. 35 in La Liga.
Messi: Ronaldo has. I’ve scored 28.
Judge: Which is the most prestigious competition in club football?
Ronaldo: Champions League.
Messi: Champions League.
Judge: Have any of you won Champions League?
Ronaldo: Yes, 4 times in total with 2 different teams. Once with Man United
and 3 times with Madrid.
Messi: Yes, 4 times as well with Barcelona only.
Judge: Who has scored more goals in the CL between the two of you?
Ronaldo: I’ve scored 114 goals in the CL.
Messi: I’ve scored 97.

Ronaldo: I think I have. 628 goals.
Messi: I’ve scored 595.
Judge: How many football records do each of you hold in total for both club and country?
Ronaldo: 146
Messi: 110
Judge: Well, after analyzing all of the facts that have been presented to me. I can only draw one conclusion when it comes to comparing you both as football players. That conclusion is that Ronaldo is the better player in almost every category. When it comes to goal scoring and accolades for both club and country, Ronaldo comes out on top. Messi, you are without a doubt Barcelona’s best player of all time. But certainly not the world’s best ever. That is clearly Ronaldo at the moment. Messi: But I am younger than Ronaldo and haven’t played as many matches as him.
Judge: I understand that, but until you surpass his goal scoring records & win as many trophies both individually and collectively as he has, then Ronaldo will, according to the statistics, be considered as the best football player of all time. Until then, keep pushing on and you just might be able to achieve just as much as Ronaldo!

I’m not sure closing the polls makes much difference. Sky Sports opened up a poll this morning, right after Ronaldo scored a hat trick and the balance of votes is still similar to the poll on here.

Does seem mad that some people think the answer is neither of them!

Even those who voted for van Dijk are Liverpool fans who would vote for Messi if it wasn't for van Dijk.

This is Pelé vs Maradona 2.0, I don't know why people are expecting some odd games at the end of the careers as the key to decide who is better.
Their careers are already mostly done and the debate will continue basically forever.

Have a hard time believing those who chose Hazard would prefer Cristiano if they had to decide between the two considering that he is a much more similar player to Messi. Not much left to argue, really.

VVD is so overrated. It's like people have never seen a top defender before.

To be fair, it was a long time since we've had a top-class classic center back. Nesta/Cannavaro in the early 00's, Rio/Vidic in the late 00's... after that there were Godin, but he played in a very defensive team, and Ramos, who played in a very attacking team and possessed unusual qualities for a center back.

Although there are all those people who say that van Dijk has to win the Ballon d'Or before Messi

VVD is very overhyped. It's like people have never seen a top defender before.
Im not going to gun him down but after seeing Hummels kind of go down a level after Klopp left & the similar hype the lad got whilst he was there - I'm sure a Balon Dor is influenced quite alot by Klopp's tactics than purely Van Dijk's ability.

Still - its ultimately a guess & as far as tests went - he came through as this seasons best defenders in the world atleast in terms of a winning something with the team.

I agree though - the way people talk about him is like players haven't defended well in a long time.

Yes and its still strange to me why Allisson and the other defenders doesn't get same credit for the transformation of the defence. Joel Matip was outstanding vs Barca but you will think VVD is one man wall holding a crap defence together. He had very good season and was arguably the best but that's all it is. The best defenders had lots of years in the top and how many of them was in Ballon Dor conversation. Plus if VVD was this good why didn't he emerge much sooner? It's very possible hes benefiting from coaching and everything came together at once like you have said.

Yes lots of defenders in the past have played a key role and in winning team to boot but none of them was being hyped like VVD now- there's less good defenders so it helped VVD.

Boateng was special for 2 or 3 years. Both defensively and in the build up. All things combined and solely looking at peak, he was the best defender of his generation, IMO.

4-4-2 which is one of the biggest football magazines in the world just ranked the best players of the last 25 years with Messi as Nr.1 and Ronaldo in 2nd as well.
Although those fools probably looked at more than just the last few weeks when they decided who was better. :houllier:

I found this, I guess it's nothing new, but definitely gives a clear picture of the stats. What's amazing is how close they generally are. I still don't think you can judge footballers on stats alone. It would be like when comparing Maradonna vs Cruyff. You can't limit these players abilities to stats alone.
