that tweet about the shirt number is bollocks. he always wanted number 19 in homage to the age he lost his virginity to one of spain’s many roundabout night whores.

He must have some seriously bad pull if it took him almost year of being a RM player before he lost his virginity.

Jones know he's a joke/nuisance figure now and just leaning into it. Like Rodwell at Sunderland, happy to sit on his hole in the physio room every morning.

To be fair to Jones, it's not his fault that his body is made of balsa wood and nor is it his fault that the club gave him the #4 shirt and a massive new contract (despite also being fully aware of his injury record). He has no reason to give up the shirt and no reason to walk away from his contract. 100% of the blame for this one lies at the feet of the club.

The abuse Phil Jones gets on here and elsewhere is really disgusting.

It would be an insult to ask him to earn his place. He should walk into the the XI, as tough as that is for Lindelöf after today's game.

Amazing how some people just believe that stupid tweet.
Jones refused to have a testimonial but sure, no way he would get rid off a shirt number if asked.

Normally don't mind Luckhurst but he knows what he is doing with this tweet. Im almost sure he just made this up and the club have proposed Varane takes the shirt next year when Jones leaves instead up adding insult to injury, excuse the pun.

Agreed. Don't think there has ever been a bad story about Jones but gets dogs abuse from his own fans for being unfortunately injury prone. Guy leaves his blood on the pitch when does play!

This will be extra motivation for Varane. If he plays well this season, all the credit should go to Jones.

Do you think he will walk sttaight in ? Im not convinced Ole will just drop Lindelof maybe he will be moved to the pivot or something but hopefully not

What gets me though the shirt number is down to Ole. Mourinho took the 9 off Martial. Ole should have just said Verane you are number 4 this season and Jones you are 44 or something like that. Player does as the manager tells him.

 That's pretty meaningful. So everytime he puts on the shirt, he gets horny.

Jones has done absolutely nothing. He's not spoken in public, he's not done any weird off-pitch stuff and he's never complained.

The only thing about Jones is that we have fans who are such god awful people that they just can't shut up about it. The only joke and nuisance are posters who can't get this concept through their thick skulls.

The memes used to be funny but the abuse he gets from our fanbase is out of order.
Him turning down his testimonial should be a flag to everyone that clearly he's been affected by the treatment of the fans.
Fanning those flames will only hurt his mental health (if it's not affected already)

Thankfully it looks like the club are keeping him out of the spotlight for whatever reason, and hopefully the addition of Varane can mean the trolls can move on.

Jones should have 100% given up the number. That cannot be defended.

Cavani not getting the 9, Bruno not getting the 8, Sancho not getting the 7, it feels like a club policy now rather than player’s choice after the Ibra-Martial kerfuffle.

Jones refused a testimonial because of the abuse, I find it hard to believe that he would make a meal out of the situation had he been asked for the shirt number.

What if it’s all bollocks and the club never asked or expected him to, or Varane never once considered asking another player to give up their number?

Thank you!

Has there been a better unveiling in recent time?

Tacky City and the effort they put in with Grealish v this. Plain, simple and absolute class.
Absolutely. So simple, but classy. The suit. The crowd. Rio. Beautiful.

City will try and trump it with Kane…featuring some zany bloo fireworks and Wonderwall blasting out over the tannoy.

Well then that’s different. IF he was asked and he didn’t then it’s poor.

Brilliantly executed by the club. For someone coming here from Madrid, the only appropriate place to do it is in front of a packed and buzzing Old Trafford. He might even feel he's stepped up a level.
