Onana has not worked out. We need a new keeper.

Talisman like goalies are critical for a team that wants to go far and as nice of a lad as he seems to be - Onana isn't that. Maybe Neuer wants to finish out his career here. To be fair to him however: we cant score to save our lives so even with a shite defense, he s going to look even worse in this team than he probably is.
Old man Neuer is 38 and looks like he doesn't like running off his line anymore. Precisely the type of signing we need to avoid.

I've said this for sometime and repeated it on the match day thread:

He doesn't make saves, he makes blocks. Shots have to hit him.

His footwork is a joke for a professional keeper, always late, leaden footed, is still setting himself as shots come in, leaving him with distances to cover. Example; Hughes had a volley from the edge of the area, it's in the middle of the goal but Onana is at finger tips to make what is a routine catch tbh.

I've said it so many times in here but his hand eye coordination and technique in actually handling shots and ball manipulation is absolutely insane, I've never seen anything like it. It's why you see so many shots come off of him at weird, unpredictable angles, seemingly always back into danger.

The ball always hits the base of his hand/top of his wrist, like a block, sending the ball back where it comes.

He cannot judge the flight of the ball so saves rarely hit the "meat" of his palm and fingers, instead hit his wrist where, and this is crucial, he has not control.

He had no athletic ability, no spring, slow to get down, cannot cover the top corners, cannot cover the bottom corners, really does play like a 5'8" keeper.

So much technically wrong with him but everything was overlooked because he can pass the ball (so what tbh) and he's ETH guy.
Honestly, this is a very good breakdown

It's unbelievable that Antony and Onana are ETH players in his previous club and asked to be signed for Man Utd for big money. ETH is self sabotaging himself.

Thanks, I just see so many issues
Your breakdown of him is absolutely spot on. As I wrote some time ago, he needs a complete technical reboot. Goalkeeping 101. And preferably not with us.

I struggle to believe that he was this lacking at his previous clubs.

The evidence is there, I've been watching lots of footage of him at previous clubs and the same weaknesses have been apparent since Ajax. Really poor shot stopping, particularly on low shots close to him because of his tendency to jump up to go down rather than going low across the ground.

The same braindead moments when it seems he's just switched off and has this massive delayed reaction. I've never seen a keeper stand stock still on so many shots. Letting balls drift over him and being made to look silly, using his amazing ball playing to roll the ball to strikers. It's all been there all along.

Even watching his supposed highlights from his previous clubs does nothing to allay my fears. The terrible technique on parrying (I tend to avoid that word and using slapping for him) that makes the ball look like a rugby ball made of bouncy ball material.

I'm just glad the majority of the fan base is waking up to it again because it's been maddening seeing so many people say he's the last thing about the team that needs sorted.

It's really glaring, every other keeper you can watch in the league has different issues but they all do a set of basics in a way that is orthodox and efficient.

Truly ridiculous he is considered a top keeper.

This hits the nail on the head, I’ve never seen so many goals go in where you just know the keeper should have done better. He also seems to make routine saves look way harder than they need to just like the save from Will Hughes.

I’m guessing he’ll get another season purely because only so much can be done in one window but he just has so many fundamental flaws that there is no hope long term.

Ineos said they are not going to allow players who clearly after 1 or 2 seasons show they are not good enough for us to just linger about on their contract. They need to start with Onana, get him out this summer where we can hopefully still get decent money for him.

The biggest crime was not letting De Gea go but instead not buying a young goalkeeper years ago to blood in under De Gea and eventually provide competition. As its stands, by the looks of Bayinder not getting games, we will have to buy 2 new goalkeepers.

Literally all of our ex keepers would be an upgrade, which is abysmal recruitment and waste of money.

I still think there is hope for him behind a settled back 4 and in a team which isn't giving away 20 shots per game. But I'm not sure why Bayindir isn't being utilized.

It was apparent early on the biggest issues with him are his actual basic skills. At this point in his career, can he improve those technical issues, or not?

The most annoying thing is, due to the players in front of him, I don't think we've ever got to see the best of his good qualities. Instead we've just had to endure how poor his keeping is, which although I expected some clangers from him, his basic errors, and the amount of them, are unforgivable.
Yeah I don’t think we can blame him for his on the ball work. It’s clearly a tactical thing where ETH has said “feck it, boot it”. The defence and midfield just isn’t there to play out from the back. It’s just the bog standard fecking basics he struggles with. We’re incredibly lucky that the majority of shots against us are low quality because any half decent chance that isn’t right at him is going in or going to be a struggle to save.

If a good affordable option comes along (like Raya) we need to go ahead and snap him up. Arsenal didn't mess about despite already having Ramsdale (who is decent enough).

I wouldn't be surprised if we were also keen on Raya. Oh well.

Hope, We Lose
Was doing really well for a solid run of games but in the past couple of games the mistakes are back and pretty bad. De Gea was the same but with worse distribution, but obviously we were spending a lot of money hoping to get a top keeper. He's had several good shot stopper games but overall his shot stopping isnt that great and was too easily beaten against Palace.

I agree, DDG is not the answer. Modern game need a GK who is good with their feets. But feck me we spent 50M on Onana who worse than DDG. Onana is not very good with his feets and a joke in shot stopping. Overall I will still take DDG over him.

When I look at it purely from a goalkeeping perspective, I do think he is an absolute luxury and his skill set is almost of no use to us.

For where we are with the rest of the squad, De Gea was absolutely a better option.

His reflexes and general saving for a keeper facing that many shots are simply not good enough. His distribution is wasted.

Ultimately going from a brilliantly coached Inter Milan side to a brainless permanently crocked Man Utd side goes in his favour, but he really doesn’t help himself. Punching people in the head, strange diving technique, clear lack of concentration at times, sorry but along with pretty much all of Ten Hag’s signings bar Martinez (injuries aside), I’d happily see him go.

Just not good enough. You never feel safe with him in goal and no amount of nice passes (that too once in awhile) will make up for that. In SAFs era he’d be seen as an absolute liability but given the team’s performances he gets a free hand to some extent.

One of the more frustrating things on the caf is when you have posters ignore things that are clear as day.

It’s been so obvious this guy is not up to it. Even when he has good performances, you just can’t ignore from a technical point of view he’s so poor.

The true test of a good goalkeeper is how at ease you feel with them between the sticks. Onana since the beginning has made my heart jump whenever the ball goes near him or our goal.

A clear fact that won’t go away with Onana in goal is that he will concede countless goals over the course of a season that you feel he should’ve done better with. Every goalie gives up a few of these but Onana is on a different level when it comes to this. He’s only been here for a season and you could make a compilation that’s enough for 3-4 seasons worth for any other reliable keeper.

We spent 50M to weaken ourselves. He has single handedly kicked us out of CL and EL by finishing bottom of the group. Cost us some points in the PL too.

I know DDG is not the answer for the future. But with him I think we should had progressed further in CL and should have 8 to 10 points more in the PL.

We spent 50M to sabotage ourselves when we could extend DDG for free on reduced wages.

It's next to impossible at Man Utd. I doubt the guy himself would admit those shortcomings. Onana is a very prideful man

I remember Taibi coming in, and it was very clear after one game that it was a disaster. SAF shipped him out quicker than lightning - I think he was on the plane out the next day! It takes courage to own your error and make it right.

It was clear that Onana had major technical issues from the very start - he is a terrible keep than fundamentally weakens the team. People comparing him to Barthez clearly never saw Barthez, who had good technical GK skills (just off-set by eccentricity, not lack of talent or coaching) and won a WC! Even the most one-eyed fans (Goldbridge) yesterday admitted than Ben Foster has stated all season that Onana lacks the basic fundamentals of a PL keeper.

Onana should go, ETH should go for demanding him, along with the people who authorised the signing.

Guarantee De Gea is back at the club once Ten Hag gets the boot in the summer.
Signing players who aren’t good enough and who nobody else wants, on ridiculous wages is why we’re in the position we’re in. Bringing DDG back would be insane.
