Have we the depth in that 10/forward role for the rest of the season? I still think Antony has a chance here at WB, am I deluded?

Swaps never seem to happen, but Garnacho for some Barca talent makes sense for both sides. We need some players who don't give the ball away easily to keep Amorim from having a coronary and Barca would have 3 legit wingers for 2 spots to keep Yamal from having to play every single minute and Raphinha is also left-footed so this gives them a right-footer.

Olmo ideally, but Fermin Lopez and like 25-30M - even if deferred cash - could work too. In theory, he would be productive looking to be our 2nd or 3rd leading goalscorer as a #10 Amorim's system. Not a genius or anything, but he works hard, is 21 and does have a palpable hunger to score goals whenever I see him. And we could throw the money towards one of the LWB, ST and #8 signings we still (at minimum) need.
 
Ruben Amorim has clearly made his mind up about what he needs to implement his system and probably has agreed with Berrada and Wilcox that most of his requests have to be financed by player sales and players on high wages being forced out.

We are on the brink for transfer window of January 2025 which still falls in the current year for PSSR/FFP especially with the loses recently declared.

I think right now most fans are desperately just looking for something positive to hang on to for the rest of the season. Ruben’s probably told the hierarchy he needs the following; 3 Goalkeepers, 6 Centre Backs, 4 Wing Backs, 1 Utility Defender, 4 Centre Midfielders/ 1 young Midfielder/ 4 Attacking Midfielders/Number 10’s, 3 Number 9’s

That’s a squad of 26 players with maybe two or three being a youth player who is 17-19 in each part of the squad.

Now honestly who do we think he would like to keep and who he has to keep as Rome wasn’t built in a day and he can maybe move 6 or 7 out a window, bring 3 to 4, promote 2 or 3 from youth team.

Green Zone
Honestly, I think right now he’s probably only happy with; T Heaton(Great senior Pro),
H Maguire, N Mazraoui, M Ugarte, L Yoro,
K Mainoo, Amad, Bruno(But they both have Latin temperaments and could fall out spectacularly in a heartbeat!)

He has huge questions about MDL lack of pace and L Martinez lack of height, Amorim likes three Athletic Mobile, tall Centre Backs but Maguire is decent on the ball and has the 6’4 huge frame that Amorim likes. He simply can’t promote 4 to 5 youngsters and buy 12 to 13 players even in the next two windows so assume that players who are in the Amber Zone like ; D Dalot, MDL, L Martinez, A Onana, L Shaw, M Mount will not be sold due to injury or the obvious we have others that are more important to move on and are clearly in the Red Zone;

Red Zone(Will be sold/Loaned/Released in 2025) ;

M Rashford(30m), T Malacia(2.5m),
C Eriksen(2.5m), Casemiro(12.5m), Antony(17.5m), J Zirkzee(25m),
J Sancho(£23m done),
V Lindelof, A Bayinder(2m),
A Garnaucho(50m Doesn’t have the football IQ to play as a 10 or a wingback in a 3421 system plus can generate the most cash as a player Sale)

Assuming we keep the 15 players in Green and Amber and sell the 10 players over two windows for about £165m then add maybe £35m in the winter window and £100m in the summer from saved wages and less pressure in the summer on FFP due to the three year cycle being reset from July 1st 2025.

We need to buy 3 players in January and 5 in the summer and then promote the best three that fits Amorim System from our youth development squads.

Winter -
N Mendes - £40m, B Chillwell(Loan) ,
P Pogba(6 Month contract/Free)
H Min Son - £10m (Can play inside left and as a 9) give him an 18 Month contract with + 1 year option if not we do a loan deal for
C Nkunku from Chelsea to the summer when we can go get Cunha, M Rogers or M Gibbs White.

People will be saying your insane with Pogba and Chillwell but both have a massive point to prove and we need not 1 but 2 left footed wing backs as Amorim likes both his wing backs to be left footed. Other cheap options are Tiernay, T Mitchell or S Reguilon on loan again all are massive upgrades on D Dalot at LWB or T Mallacia

Pogba will sink or swim but he might win us 2 or 3 games and elevate the squad, he might be a guy with a point to prove and we can’t lose on a 6 month contract. Pogba also played his best football in a 343 or 3421 at Juventus, he understands the system. He also gives physicality in midfield which we currently do not have! If it doesn’t work we only had him on a 6 month contract at £120k per week?

Then we can do the major work in the summer where the club needs to go after the following elite level players;
Summer:
R Araujo (60m/CB),
A Gomes(Free/CM/AM),
V Gyokeres(65m/CF), Ederson(55m/CM/DM),
M Cunha(65m/AM/SS),

Only a summer window like that would elevate thus squad back to a Top 4/6 PL team

Eriksen (7.8m p/y salary). Contract expired.
Casemiro (18.2m p/y salary). Must go because 350k p/w shouldn’t be on the bench.
Rashford (15.6m p/y salary). Must go because we can’t afford 300k p/w without playing him.
Malacia (3.9m p/y salary). It’s realistic due to sensible wages.
Evans (3.4m p/y salary). Contract expired,
Lindelof (6.2m p/y salary). Contract expired.

Total: 61m per year free space from our cheque book.

We can get:
A premium price player £70m on 120k wages. (Total spend: 20m per year)
2 mid price 2x (£45m) on 100k wages. (Total spend: 28m per year)
2 cheap/budget prices 2x (£15m) on 65k wages. (Total spend: 13m per year)

No player that is good enough, that will cost the club £70m, is going to accept 120k per week. Dreaming.
 
Bit concerned we're rumoured to be moving on Malacia and Zirkzee in January on loans. While they aren't good enough, are we really going to go the rest of the season with Shaw as the only proper LB and even less forward options? I hope we've got something else lined up or this could be bleak.
 
Casemiro, Antony, Rashford and Mount are the biggest transfer headaches, All on big wages - together almost £1.1m of wages and neither of them is even contributing to our first team in a material way.

These are a must go, have ordered them in priority, i know Maguire has been playing well but hes on 200k, not ideally suited to modern football, so the saving on his wages could be used in other areas and give Godwill Kukonki a go.

Kunkonki and Amas are better than Malacia, hell Dalot albeit mediocre is better than Malacia, assuming we would bring in a replacement if we got a loan fee

What is the point of keeping Zirkzee? literally not working for us, better to play a youngster we have plenty who can play as a 10 none of which could possibly offer less than Zirkzee does

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy for them all to leave, I'm just concerned that we're one injury away from having to play Bruno at LB. Amas is going out on loan also. I hope we bring Alvarez back from Benfica, that should keep us covered. As for the forward positions, we aren't getting anyone this January and Zirkzee needs to go really. The sooner the better.

Salah wages when he joined Liverpool was 120k p/w. The list that I made was just estimation what we can do if we get rid the listed players’ wages so that means we can still adjust all the value. For example if we spend a player for £45m and giving him 70k p/w (Luis Diaz wages is 55k) that means we have free 30k to boost the 120k to 150k p/w.
 
I find it amazing that modern day professional footbsll players can be such one trick ponies, surely some of our squad can be trained and excel in other positions.
 
There are a few who will go in summer, Eriksen, Evans, nailed on to go maybe Jan ?
I'd sell Rashford he wants to go anyway, Zirkzee never was good enough Hojlund I'd get rid of as well, Shaw can go Antony. . There's loads who could go . Onana can go hopeless keeper .

Salah signed for £34m, after having had a failed tenure at Chelsea and going back to Roma. No way was he going to be requesting £200-250k a week on his first deal.

I think you give Mount, Maguire and Martinez until the end of the season to prove that they deserve one more year as we will only be able to get 2 in max January and 4/5 in the summer and 1/2 of those will need to be on a free transfer.

I thought Martinez was brilliant tonight, Maguire showed his strengths.

Whether that continues who knows, still need a new LCB anyway as Luke Shaw needs selling.

Went off injured down the tunnel in the Carabao tie v Spurs. He's out of contract in the summer so I expect he'll just run it down and we won't renew

a. Rashford - Loan looks likely. Feasibility of permanent sale will be clear based on loan performances.

b. Casemiro - Saudi rumors seem to be cooling off. Suspect he stays until summer at which point he only has 1 year on contract. At that point maybe we can loan him to someone and split the wages.

c. Shaw - 2 more years on contract in the summer. Terrible injury record but wages at GBP150k are not as bad as others. If he can maintain fitness in second half of season, maybe a sale is feasible in the summer.

d. Antony - 2 more years of contract in the summer. Injury record is not a concern. Wages are very high GBP200k but there is some news that wages may be predicated on bonuses etc (so real wages maybe lower). The high transfer fee complicates an exit as he would still be carrying a value of EUR38-40m in the summer. Suspect he goes on loan in the summer and moves on a permanent in 2026.

e. Mount - The most complicated - high wages, large transfer fee, terrible injury record and longish contract till 2028. Almost impossible to sell unless he can somehow find fitness and remain injury free for 6-9 months (which seems an impossibility)

In aggregate, these 5 players are earning somewhere around GBP1.2bn-1.3bn of wages per week or costing us the transfer fee + wage package of 1 Lenny Yoro a season.

That's a "Christ, we are fecked" list. These are some of the poster boys of our bad recruitment and contract extensions over the past decade. Don't think we'll be able to move on anyone of them without taking huge losses and subsidizing their wages. They are the albatross around the club's and Amo's necks.

We have to pray that Saudi comes calling and takes Casemiro off our hands.
We need miracles (or alternative healers) to have Shaw and Mount fit enough to contribute because I don't think they are sellable.
It's going to take some doing getting rid of Rashy.
Antony is our version of Nicolas Pepe but twice as worse. We'll need to pay someone to play him.

Really grim situation.

Mendes I'm all for it.
Chillwell nah, if we cannot improve drastically this position let it be until the summer. Maz, Dalot, Shaw should be enough.
Tierney, Mitchell, Regulion improvement on Dalot and Malacia? Don't think so.
Pogba in Amorim system? When have you seen Pogba break a sweat? Totally unsuitable.
H Min Son? In what paralel universe would he be obtainable in winter? From Spurs? From Levy?
Nkunku on loan could work. But don't believe Chelsea would loan him to PL club.

Maguire I think is fine for another season as a squad option but ultimately he's someone I think they need to upgrade long-term and certainly shouldn't extend further. The problem is he always has these games against top 6 teams where he's all-action and has colossal stats in terms of his clearances, blocks etc. But if you play him for a run of 5-10 games he's almost guaranteed - in some of the games United are looking to control and play a higher line and be a bit more on the front foot - going to make mistakes and give away goals.

Bayindir it's fair to say deserves a bit more of a chance after the Arsenal performance. Was probably harsh to write him off after one game.

Martinez has been better but I'd still need to see more consistency till the end of the season. Would maybe be fine as a squad player anyway, but I'd need more convincing that he's a viable long-term starter. I struggle to overlook his overall lack of physicality. But he has been better recently and looks as though he's starting to understand his role more in the system in terms of pressing from the back after a shaky start when he was partially at fault for both goals against Bodo/Glimnt.

I feel a bit sorry for Zirkzee and he wasn't bad off the bench against Arsenal, but I just feel like he's not the right profile either as a CF or #10 in this system, and he'd be one I'd look to sell in the summer barring any great uptick in his performance levels simply because United need to bring money in and he's one of their more sellable assets at this point.

The rest at this stage I still think either aren't good enough or can't be relied upon, or out of contract and shouldn't be extended (such as Eriksen).

Don't forget the 25 million from Sancho. Zirkzee gets one more season after this to see if it works to be fair. I think we need to have a "two sessions or you're out" rule.
 
Progress is worryingly slow, we are half way through January now. It’s either going to be nothing are some badly rushed moves.

The way the Rashford talk was going I thought he would be well out the door by now but I guess with the money involved pursuers have analysed properly and decided they don’t want to shell out on him. Going to be a loan where we pay I’m afraid.

With the wages Rashford and Casemiro are on, it makes sense for interested parties to wait until deadline to finalise anything - you're talking savings in over a million in wages alone for Rashford.

I don’t think depth is a big concern when a lot of these players hardly play and aren’t very good when they do.

Not expecting anyone to leave permanently this window but even loans save some money and might put someone in the shop window. It’s stupid to hang on to someone like Antony who has played eighty something minutes on the league just to make up the numbers.
