In the first half I thought he was good but second half poor. Long term I'm not sure if he's good enough to be first choice for us, I wouldn't mind seeing us get someone else in.

His positioning from the back when we're in possession is diabolical. Has his hands up and never makes himself available for a pass.

Never mind his general clumsiness and unease with defending.

Get rid and ASAP imo.

I think I am done with any expectation of him ever fulfilling his potential. Now I am happy with him being a good squad player, but that's it. Expect us to upgrade or turning to other CBs and try to work them to fulfill their potential, and less of both Smalling and Jones starting in the future.

He’s a very poor mans John Terry.

Jones needs to go. Neither him nor Smalling are the answer, and we’ve let them have far too much time to try and show they are.

Why didn't he challenge for the header for the goal? That's very poor defending.

Also he is such a brainless player, in the last few mins we got a throw in, he just threw the ball to Valencia and stood outside the field. Valencia then shouted him to get into position to receive the ball and get on with it.

I had high hopes on him, but every week it's going down.
In general, I can't think of many times he has won headers. His defending skills are more about tackling, intercepting.

He didn't even compete for the header, losing headers in dangerous zones puts us under lot of pressure. He should have lot better for goal against Newcastle and against Spurs.

Apart from Smalling (thanks to his height), we don't have a single CB who is dominant in the air. In my opinion that's a real issue often overlooked in our CBs.

Source? Might be a blessing in disguise.
Taken from the Metro :

"Jose Mourinho has revealed that Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo will miss Manchester United’s Champions League clash with Sevilla on Wednesday. The United manager admits he was unable to rest his key players for the FA Cup tie against Huddersfield Town on Saturday as Romelu Lukaku’s double sealed a 2-0 victory. Several first-team players missed the match due to injury and while Mourinho expects Marcus Rashford, Antonio Valencia and Ander Herrera to recover for the trip to Spain this week, Jones and Rojo are set to miss out. Pogba, meanwhile, was unable to play against Huddersfield due to illness, but the midfielder reportedly attended training on Sunday which indicates that he could be involved against Sevilla."

Does any one else not just feel exasperated with him and Smalling? its always something. I would like us to start a clean slate in the summer, sell both. Buy a new defender and promote Tuanzebe please.

Smalling just come off the back of a very good display and still people are moaning about him. Guy is the best player we have at defending and winning headers. If it were so easy to replace him I'm sure one of Sir Alex, Moyes, Van Gaal of Jose would have done so.
Fans keep looking at minor incidents in games and not the actual overall record of our defensive unit. Yes there's room for improvement, but some of you would just sell everyone and discover these magical replacements who are all available.

They dont work well together. I think someone else mentioned this earlier but both are classical defenders i.e. clear the ball at all costs. In 2018, clearing the ball just isnt good enough. You need to be able to pick a pass out or hold the ball under pressure. Hopefully, going forward neither start together. Both are wonderful defenders, just not very good footballers.

I feel more exasperation with those who expect Smalling and Jones to defend at a high level but also be close to Beckenbauer and Baresi on the ball.

Will definitely keep Jones and not sell him. Very good defender on his days. Only problem is when he's having a day off, he really, really has a day off and plays all over the place, but these are random games here and there, mostly a very good defender.

Yeah he’s been exceptional for about 90% of the time, but that other 10% he’s an absolute train wreck, and that’s why people want rid. I rate him highly but he’s still got a lot to learn when it comes to defending space rather than constantly attacking the ball/engaging the man.

Worth keeping, but he needs to be kept away from Smalling.

Has yet to play single minute in CL this season(or any other competition besides PL). Let's sell Smalling because he is unreliable.

He's been on and off injured almost all his career here. In other top teams, he'd be sold years ago. But at United, we must keep him at all cost, as he can pass the ball forward.

He's missed 37 premier league games since the start of 15/16 season. It's getting ridiculous.

It's a decent probability that Scott McTominay will have played more games for Manchester United's first team than Phil Jones come the end of this season.
...In what will probably be Phil's best season overall. Im sorry Jones, but the time has come.s

Only problem is, he will find ways of getting injured. Sell him before we sell any of our other CBs. Smalling despite his fault is a very good back up CB. Jones is neither a starter, nor a reliable CB because he will always be injured anyway. Ridiculously crocked up body which will only get worse.

I don't think he's injured. AFter that horror show against Spurs, Jose simply doesn't trust in him anymore.
It's not about injury that he's not playing.

Baily and Jones are the best CB partner by far. Rojo has missed a lot more through injury, but everyone seems to be talking about Jones. If we're gonna sell, Rojo needs to go ahead of Jones.

Rojo has had 2 injury issues, one was a shoulder dislocation, the other an ACL. He is not as injury prone as Jones, no one in the club is. Heck even Falcao had a better injury record when he was here.

Rojo is injury prone. He's missed 71 games through injury since he joined United 4 seasons ago. That's almost two full seasons! His injury record before he joined United is actually not quite as bad. Jones has missed 73 games in the same time period

Could be the case. Its rumored Jose had a huge argument with Jones and Pogba in the dressing room following the Newcastle defeat

Where did you hear that? I wouldn't be surprised to be honest. Jose has always had reliable CBs in his teams, in his tenure here he has always trusted Jones when fit, I wouldn't say Jones has repaid him accordingly.

I’d prefer him to be utilized as a right back or on the right of a three moving forward; he has a lot of qualities, but his decision making sometimes is moronic and can’t be rescued while playing centrally.

I always liked him best as a DM.

Fergie played him there occasionally and I liked it. He had two defenders behind him to cover his silly mindfart mistakes. And he generally likes to get his foot (and head) stuck in.

We've never had 2 CBs fit since Rio and Vidic left though, so we've never had the option to do it.

Though, two of Rojo's major injuries account for more than 60% of the games he has missed.
