PL L FA Premier League

Brentford 4:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

Sun, 04 May 2025

I shouldn't, but stopped caring about the league games several months ago! It's all about Europa and this season will just be a footnote in our history about a terrible season.

I hope players can give all for the 2 remaining (jopefully) Europa games, as most wont be here next season.

Decent given we played a heavily rotated team. That won’t stop the moaners though

Haters just can't help themselves
Bunch of 'fans' hate-watching and waiting for us to lose just to come prancing around with their '5 defenders! System sucks! Amorim out!' ignorant nonsense.

4-3 with kids away to a very physical Brentford. Well done, lads! MDL injury showed that Amorim was right to rest everyone today - imagine if that happened to Bruno.

I do believe those you refer to as haters and moaners might just feel a bit upset about the league position, -10 goal difference and the struggles on the field. This is the whole PL season and probably not reactions to one result.

Showing some positivity is fine, but expectations keep being lowered and these results are not only isolated to this game with only the kids.

Another defeat but we all know the priority is the Europa League and I’d say we’re just one defensive injury away from a real defensive crisis with Dalot and De Ligt possibly out for the season.

Yoro, Maguire and Lindelof look to be the first choice defence from now on.
We should never play Lindelof in EL Semi and Final. We already have Onana who is full of mistake and we can't take another Lindelof for these 2 important games.

Can we not just concede the last few league games? Not sure anyone is remotely interested

I am still not convinced that Amorim's system can work in EPL. We will see after the summer and I hope he will prove me wrong but I am sceptical. Not a fan of the wingback system at all.
Tiresome

Result is what it is, doesn’t feel nice to keep losing league games but we played 7 players under 21 and gave minutes to Amad, Mount, Shaw and DeLigt (briefly).

The PL is too strong to be able to do that and beat teams challenging for Europe away from home … so it’s an unfortunate decision that was made so we can’t have it both ways.

Have you watched the guy over the last 12 months?
There is no measure by which you have serious conversation about a 20 year old player that has already shown what he’s shown if he hits a wall in a second season in which he’s been injured and the structure around him crumbled. Have you watched the guy since he started against Everton last year? Of course that doesn’t count cause then there’d be nothing to whine about.

Made it a bit interesting at the end. But I knew Taylor would blow the whistle as soon as he could so didn't get my hopes up. De Ligt's injury is a worse outcome than the loss tbh.

Amad scoring after just being back is great. Good for Mount. Shaw got some minutes and Fredricson looked good too. Ugarte had a good game after a few dodgy ones recently.

On the flipside, Amass vs Mbeumo was a disaster. He needs a Amad to Sunderland like loan to get him used to the physicality of the game. Mainoo genuinely looks lost as a player. He had a great introduction but we expected too much of him and he needs to work on finding what he wants to be, a CM or AM. And I know he scored a great goal, but Garnacho often misplaces passes while facing our goal in the buildup and that technical limitation has to be a worry. The fact that a past-it Eriksen can come on and show he's our best passer has to be another worry as well.

But all that has to be addressed in the transfer window. All of it probably won't be, but it's clear where the problems are.

There's more to tactics than a fecking formation that isn't static in real time play. So many lazy comments about "3 at the back" or "5 at the back" without any other context.

They were much better in the first 45, but I'd argue there 3rd goal came totally against the run of play - we were on top at that point.

Not saying we deserved to win or anything, but I don't think they totally bossed it before 4-1.
No, they didn't boss it to 4-1 level but clearly deserved the win. Then we had a good shout at deserving a draw, but we absolutely weren't the better team.

No big deal given it was a second string with no experience playing together at this level.

Good to get mount on the score sheet.
Shaw getting the armband as a token gesture perhaps could indicate he is off in the summer.

3rd youngest starting team in the premier league era, it’s all just very meh no matter how you spin it.

Glad we made it look respectable

I was hoping that the team would play with some freedom and give the fans something to cheer about in the league now that we are towards the end (some teams might be going on holiday etc). The results are still awful.

Can't believe so many fans are accepting this. Would be a miracle if he starts challenging for the league next season or even gets top 4 when he is struggling to even win 2 league games in a row! He only has 3 games left to do it.

this was a nothing game really, but points few things for us:

Negatives:
  • Amas not ready yet for first team football, struggled against a physical Brentford side
  • Obi not yet ready to lead the line
  • Dorgu still struggling to adapt to PL football (not surprised since he came in January)
  • Kobbie done nothing after involving in the first goal
  • Bayandir shaky
  • De light Injury
  • first 2 goal conceded should have been avoidable
  • Luke Shaw performance (should have seen it coming as soon as he almost scored an own goal).
Positives:
  • Good performance from Garnacho (assist and goal)
  • Good performance from Mount (goal)
  • Good performance from Ugarte (my choice of our best player in the game)
  • Amad's back
  • We scored 3 goals away from home
  • We manage to rest Bruno and Casemiro

With injuries to Dalot, Heaven and De Ligt who are you actually wanting to play there? I didn’t watch the game today but I heard that Shaw struggled somewhat again (not including the OG). And the solution that everyone throws out- “just play Amad at RWB”- is not something Amorim seems convinced by.

As I said I think we’re one defensive injury away from a crisis at the back at this point.

Doesn’t mean a serious conversation can’t be had over him. He was great last season, and he is young, but he has been awful this season, so it’s logical that questions could potentially be asked. And this is not me writing him off, I am hoping he comes back next season and is great. I’m curious, If he is poor again next again, what will be your opinion then be, “he is 21 year old that has already shown what he can do”?

More silly questions.

So frustrated with how poorly we dealt with those throw ins, we needed those goals at 3-1 not 4-1

Seriously, I rather have Mazroui there. Put Shaw as LWB and Dorgu at RWB.

I thought we played well, didn't deserve the1-4 scoreline. Those chances missed either side of half time killed us as they went 3-1 up.Getting it back to 3-4 gave us a chance but Taylor made sure to blow the final whistle even though he should have added another 90 seconds.
We're such a feather weight team we get bullied by all teams, massive transfer window ahead ro solve some of the issues.

- Our team keeping going despite being 4-1 down and getting it back to 4-3

- Young lads getting 90 minutes of experience in a PL away game

- Onana made no mistakes today.

Honestly loads of positives to take from the game!

What was it with those throw ins from Kayode? Like watching black Rory Delap. But yeah we dealt so poorly with those.

That's insane, I keep scratching my head wondering how they can be having a worse season than us.
Imagine if we end up with sixteenth and seventh place in a playoff for a champions league spot. It’s kind of hilarious.

Embarrassing to lose to poor sides routinely. Think we have learned that Amass and Obi are a couple of years away. Shaw looks done, and I think it’s getting close to the time to have serious conversations about Mainoo
Isn't it a bit arrogant to say Brentford are a poor side.

Having said that I am strangely optimistic. We are literally playing with bare bones, our style is starting to look very good also, it’s not hard to see with the full team and 3 good additions us being a real hand full next season. Need a defensive coach though don’t know if it’s because the wingbacks aren’t centre half ish but we are awful in the air in our own box.

Ugarte alone in midfield, youngsters couldn’t deal with physical and athletic Brentford. Utd as whole need athletic players to improve the team. Mainoo and mount has to look at their game very closely.
Anyways low expectations from the game given the season, focus on europa
The athleticism of the side is a big issue. It seeps down to the younger teams. We never seem to know what attribute to recruit. It is either a lump or a little skillful player. Can't we get players who are both.

We had our spells in that game without ever really looking threatening until the end, we're just weak as piss physically and they were clincial.

Only managed to watch 20mins or so but their 3rd goal sums us up at the moment. We have plenty of the ball and look composed, we work it around to Amad in a good position with a few players in the box, it’s a simple chance to put in a dangerous cross to the back post but he doesn’t clear the first man. It’s a poor attempt and he should have 100% been able to make the cross. Brentford go up the other end not long after and in a similar position they whip the cross into the back post and they score.

It’s a matter of inches that Amad didn’t get the cross in and obviously no guarantee we’d score but it’s these moments were our fundamentals aren’t good enough and there is no excuse for them not to be apart from sloppy play.

Yeah definitely need more athleticism this summer

West Ham and Spurs drawing today, kept us in 15th place in the table, rather than drop down even further…as if that's any consolation !
We are still ending up in the yellow sticker, bargain basement, clearance bin.

Roll on Thursday night !

.

We were the better team, they were clinical when given the chances.

I was sitting right next to the away fans and they were absolutely mega, the only group you could hear for 90 minutes. Brentford fans are utter shit, mind you
