Positives:

De Gea was well ..... De Gea and further showed why he’s undisputedly the best keeper in the world.

McTominay I thought showed he deserved to be in the team and was our best outfield player, showed a lot of promise.

Pogba showed in glimpses in the second half of what he can do when in a midfield 3, clearly lacking confidence and wanted to be as disciplined as possible tonight but the proof is there about his position.

Negatives:

Sanchez on the left means we're sorely missing Martial’s directness and pace, play Sanchez on the right and allow him to come inside still but with Valencia overlapping which could be immense and allow Martial to play in his undoubted best position.

Lukaku showed at the weekend that he’s not a target man and much prefers being played in behind where he can use his pace and power then finish rather than his piss poor first touch and hold up play being exposed from simply lumping the ball up to him.

Shaw has to be starting our biggest games as first choice left back and if he’s still not trusted over Young when he’s been playing the best he’s played ever under Jose then I’m as much as I don’t want to see it we have to sell him and buy a world class left back, I’m sorry but Young is 1. A winger 2. An ok at best left back 3. Isn’t left footed so has to cut back inside EVERY single time and 4. His natural instincts aren’t that of a left back.

Sorry, there's been mass amnesia around these parts. People only remember us battering Roma 7-1.
We usually had some tripe under Fergie when we were playing group stage CL football in between tough league games with a bunch of 2nd stringers. Tonight was a knock out stage game with a £500M net value line up ffs!

Would you people stop with the "remember when SAF did it"? It's such a cringy comparison, it's pathetic.
What's cringy is that you're incapable of understanding my point, which is that it's a typical European away performance. Hardly the disaster some make it out to be. :wenger:

I detest those drums. They don't sound good, they never do. Part of the reason watching Bundesliga games can be a chore. And England home games.

I was saying that no one cared all that much about the style of football we were playing as long as we are winning. At the beginning of the season when we were clicking and beating teams 4-0, no one was on here banging on about our football. Then City ran away with the league, Liverpool and Spurs are playing well also and now everyone cares about the way we play all of a sudden.

My point is, if City were playing like that are currently and only a couple of points clear at the top no one would be clamouring for us to play the same way. Hence, City have broken people on this forum.

Sanchez & Lukaku getting hammering tonight, yet they had so little support it was almost impossible for either of them to leave any kind of mark on the game.

Same in Spain? The best teams in Spain by a mile - Barcelona and Real Madrid - with the best football on the pitch, have been winning almost everything for a long time. Atletico have won the league once in I don't even know how many years (definitely more than 15) and even that season, they were performing on an exceptional level, had some remarkable match-winners and world class players, and had a manager with loads of energy, passion and something to prove. That Atletico side worked their bollocks off, especially in such supposed tight and hard games. We as a team are consistently slacking, not running enough on the grand scheme which is shown by the fact that Manchester United's squad has ran the least amount in the whole Premier league.

I was talking about dominating Europe, which means dominating over all the other top teams. Yes, you compared us to Atletico, otherwise why would you even bring them up? In European competitions, a lot more often than not, the best teams have shown a lot of amazing football on the pitch.
I honestly don't know why you keep saying that I want United to be Atletico Madrid, I haven't compared the sides. I've told you this three times now, just please go back and read the original comment so we can stop having this discussion.

I can't be any clearer than that. So far it's you who has done all the comparing. I just don't understand why people want us to be like City, Spurs or Liverpool?

Makes me wonder why that is?

Surely under Fergie we had some sort of intensity in attack & not just sit back and defend. This is so dull.
A few times we tried to attack away from home and Fergie realized it was naive so he reverted to the safe approach.

I wouldn’t want to have to play away and be forced into scoring. 0-0 is fine. We are at home, we have the crowd, we can win it. We will win it.
Sevilla will go through with a draw or win. We MUST win and winning is the only option so that's why I'm a little worried but let's hope we get the job done.

Yeah, much like the dire performances against Lille, Lyon or Roma. We actually equalised in the 87th minute against Lyon in 2007.

Nah, fans are complaining about us playing utterly tedious and negative football because they don't like watching tedious and negative football. If we cast our minds back as far as 15/16 people were complaining bitterly about van Gaal - was that because City had "broken" United fans by finishing in incredible 4th position? Or had Leicester and Arsenal "broken" us? No. Most fans just genuinely like to see United play good football and will complain about negative and boring football when they see it, whether it's City at the top or Leicester.

The problem for me stems from the fans willingness to accept mediocrity. We quaintly, almost romantically, see ourselves as fair minded and patient and that has had a knock on effect on the club. We accommodate this outdated and poorly thought out football far longer than fans of every other top club in Europe and this is why I think we are getting left so far behind. We are very much in danger of going the way of the scousers because of our own inability to stand up and say enough is enough.

We've lost our way somewhere, probably beginning when Sir Alex adapted our tactics to play in Europe more effectively (less naively?) and, because his legacy was cemented by then, we accepted this pragmatism in the pursuit of results. The "Rooney on the left" years are still having an effect on the supporters to this day.

The sooner we get back to understanding that trying to play our opponents game, rather than concentrating on our own, isn't what Manchester United is about, the sooner we can start looking forward again. Just look at all the top teams in Europe....Real, Barca, City, PSG, Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea.....how many play with BOTH eyes on what the opposition is doing? We approach it like we're playing the italians in the 90's and that means we are burdening our players with the tactical possibilities and outcomes of every move. We seem to overthink EVERYTHING, even the simplest pass seems beyond some of our players, and that for me is the cause of our laughably indecisive football.

We're playing Chess whilst our opposition are on a bouncy castle.

Sadly, I think that until we stop being so accepting of this diabolical football and remember, as fans, what it is that makes us Manchester United, we will continue to allow this rudderless ship to bugger about willy nilly until it hits a great big bloody iceberg.

Yup. Thats exactly what we need. Heaven forbid we actually coach the players we have, just spend more money on the attack.
It wouldn't be my preference as I'd rather stick with Martial and Rashford getting minutes and improving our overall play and other areas but I feel with how our season finishes Ed will push for that signing and Jose will feel the pressure to deliver.

I'm almost at a loss with what to say .I'm sure Jose will be patting himself on the back with a " job well done " and exactly the result he was looking for .Presumably he planned on Degea pulling off an unbelievable save to keep us in it and planned to let them have 20 shots at goal ( and for us to only have 1 ) in the hope that none would go in. Once again we have ridden our luck and set up to keep a clean sheet. While the likes of Liverpool and city go hell for leather and bludgeon there opponents into submission and now have the luxury of resting players for the second leg while we remain on a knife edge only one away goal away from disaster ( can any of you see us putting more than 2 past them in the next leg ?).
Tottenham also got a fabulous away result at Juve with 2 away goals, while Chelsea played very well against Barca and were very unlucky not to win.So we put in the worst performance of all the English participants and don't even try to win the game.
Watching the Barca game I dread the thought of a back 4 of Valencia, young ,Jones , Smalling coming up against the likes of Barca,Madrid,Bayern,City I fear they could humiliate us.
Bailly will be a welcome return but he is but one man and the rest of our back 4 options are workmanlike at best and woeful at worst.
Another disappointing performance but hardly a surprise.
Ps
Lukaku ! An embarrassment at this level.

Pps real danger that we are turning Sanchez into a problem rather than a solution

Van Gaal set the team up to play the worst football we've ever seen. Plus, we hardly won any of our games. I go back to my point, if City were only 3 points clear right now we wouldn't have this City love in every week.

I don’t understand why we can’t just pick our best 11 players each week in a formation that suits their strengths.
nothing to do with players and formation. we played 4 3 3 today with pogba left of midfield 3. It is about how the manager wants us to play, always has been.

Typical away European performance. We had dozens like that under Fergie.
The difference is we knew could out play anyone in the competition at Old Trafford. This team isn't capable of the same.

You are deflecting now. I have read your initial response and I see no other reason for you to mention Atletico, unless to use them as a comparison due to the perceived similarity that Simeone and Mourinho share as defensive-minded managers. Simeone has shown that Atletico can play football on a world-class level when they were seriously challenging in Spain and Europe, even if their style wasn't to keep a lot of the ball and have possession. They still showed a few times more quality than we are right now when having the ball and played much faster in their transitions. Atletico Madrid also can't hold a candle in terms of financial power when compared to any other top team, so they were hugely praised for their achievements but could never sustain them with consistently defensive football. They have now obviously regressed and are nowhere near as dangerous as before.

I have also never said I want us to play like any of the teams you mentioned - you are just trying to put words in my mouth. My wish is for us to play as Manchester United, form our own current style, whilst respecting the history and the grounds on which the club has been built since its' beginning.

Yes, if we were much better than we are now then people wouldn't complain.

Thing that pisses me off the most is how shite our best players are in big games. It’s been a theme over the past few years.

  • Five of Manchester United's last seven Champions League away matches in Spain have ended goalless.
  • This was Manchester United's ninth clean sheet in their last 11 matches in all competitions and their 23rd in all competitions this season - three more than any other Premier League side.
  • Sevilla failed to score in a home Champions League game for the very first time - this was their 19th home match in the competition.
  • Scott McTominay became the fourth youngest Englishman to start a Champions League knockout match United - only Wayne Rooney, Phil Neville and Phil Jones were younger.

We had a plan that was blown out due to Ander’s unfortunate injury. Pogba came on and didn’t offer the pressing and energy Herrera does and that put us on the back foot for most of the match. We introduced Martial and Rashford too late but we did have a couple of chances that we could done better with.
Overall an okay result given we play Chelsea next and we do also play Liverpool before the return leg against Sevilla, which we will completely go for it.

Superb performance by De Gea, great one by McTominay, really happy to see him play tonight

Also I still don't get what you're demonstrating with this hypothetical. United fans would be less disgruntled if we were close to being title contenders. Well... yeah, definitely. So what?

How can anyone say controlled?

We got dicked for 90 minutes against a shite team. They should be embarrassed that we have to even play like that.

It was torture to watch. Not getting an away goal is stupid
Well said.
Liniker and co on BT said it was a job well done, How ??
We only got the draw due to DDG , we had one tame shot on goal, maybe I am being to critical but I hated the game thought we were dreadful.
