No one has Pogba’s array of abilities. If we had to replace him with someone I think pjanic is a good idea.
Jack of all trade, master of none.
I would rather a specialist like KDB or even Kante than Pogba’s array of abilities. Pogba is the Wayne Rooney of the central midfield.

No players are, but your two options were a defensive midfielder and a good but not great attacking midfielder.
And that’s because since Jose has been forced to persist with the mediocre defence unit, any midfielder we buy will still have to sit behind the ball to protect the our centre-halves.

How on Earth would work if we play Matic and Casemiro together? But more importantly, how the replacement to Pogba is either a defensive midfielder or an attacking midfielder?

There are no suitable replacements. At least none that would want to join us.

That's it in a nutshell. The way we are currently set up, we'd have to raise & train a replacement ourselves. It seems everyone is onto our issues, as the dirty laundry has been aired. Would've been better to have bought Savic pre-WC (although his value wasn't heightened by his performance), then sell Pogba & re-boot from there.

Has to be a mix and match. Like what Liverpool did with Coutinho. Multiple players with different skill set.
The below is not bad !

Sanchez - Eriksen - RW
Matic - Rakitic

The point is even if Mourinho signs Messi or KDB, he would want them to track back like defensive midfielders cos he cannot trust the defensive partnership of Smalling/Jones. I don’t trust them either.

Our negativity in most games last season is because of our weak centre-halves. Without 6-7 players behind the ball all the time, our defenders can’t defend for shit. Even with the ultra defensive approach, they still made De Gea face 120 shots on target last season.

Even assuming that is the case, how will Pogba's replacement be either a defensive midfielder or an attacking midfielder? It is like saying if we sell Martial, we should either sign Dembele (from Barca) or Sandro (from Juventus).

Kante, Mbappe & Dybala then we can talk about how much money to add on top of that.

Would you not rather have someone whose top skill is defending than buying an Ozil or Dybala and then ask him to be tracking back all the time?

Pogba should never have been tasked to track back last season. He’s not very good at positioning & snuffing out attacks, his biggest strength is going forward, winning duels, etc. Even at Juventus, Vidal was the protector of the realm.

We are going in circles now. Clearly, you had no idea what types of players were Casemiro and SMS, cause otherwise one or other to replace Pogba makes absolutely no sense.

There's no player out there who replaces exactly what Pogba brings at his best.

But if (going by this afternoons obviously nonsense tweets) you could swap Rakitic and Dembele for Pogba, and then bring in Milinkovic-Savic as well, I reckon we'd have a better rounded midfield and attack than by keeping an unhappy Pogba and bringing none of those three in.

Agreed. Hope he'll stay. I can see Kanté and Eriksen/Tolisso or another B2B. Unfortunately, no one of these would come. I still can't believe we didn't buy Kante when he was at LFC and build the team around him. What a player and what a guy!

Sure. I just found weird why the poster wanted to replace Pogba with either SMS or Casemiro, two totally different players.

I have a perfect idea of the type of players they are. Casemiro is defensive, SMS is more of an all-rounder like Vidal & Nainggolan.

If we got any of the two, Jose will curtail their attacking strength and make them defend like he’s done with Pogba - because of the weak central defenders we have.

We are not going in circles, you are just not seeing the point being made here. Until we fix the back 4, any player Jose buys in the midfield must defend 80% of the time. Jose, simply put, does not trust Smalling/Jones/Rojo.

In a vacuum, I don't agree with the posters who seem to think Pogba is utterly irreplaceable. In fact, I think if you could ship him out and get a world class number and a world class midfield who controls games then I think we'd actually be better off for it. But I am convinced that those two players either don't exist or aren't available. Most of the names being suggested as a replacement are almost hilariously underwhelming, and the rest are a pipe dream.

If he goes to Juventus, Pjanic plus some cash. If he goes to Barcelona, Rakitic. I doubt he will be leaving now as for his transfer to be finalised and United organise a swap or replacement there is very little time to sort all this out.
If he does leave, it will be hard watching him play to his potential at another top club after him being shackled at United.

This thread scared me for a second. Let's discuss this when the time comes (I'm hoping we never have to).

We should go for Mark Noble because at least Barcelona or Real Madrid won't come in and snatch him from us. The world class players just break your heart.

If Barca offers Dembele and Rakitic I'd be more than happy. Pogba is an excellent player but he's never going to make an impact in this league.

Mourinho has already seen this coming hence the signing of fred and perriera playing as 6, truth being told i would sell pobga to barcelona for 100 mill straight cash today, and an additional 50 mil over the next two seasons.

option 2: swap demblele for pogba and an additional 50 mill over the next two

get alderweireld and danny rose in, if not both then definetely danny rose, luke shaw is only making noise as he knows no club in the country will match his current wages.
move ashley young to right wing allowing dembele to bed in [can be used as cover for left back along with dalot], summer 2019 get rid or rojo and jones, let shaw leave on a free].
see below for more details

dalot /valencia........ linderof/bailly ..... alderweireld ..... danny rose /young/dalot

....................................Def midfield centre fred or matic...............................................

..................................Midfield centre fred or perriera................................................

AMR a young and new signing ideally dembele pogba swap ...............AMC Sanchez or linguard.........................Martial or rashford

..............................................striker.. Lukkaku or Martial..............................

REASON - because he can basically do everything Pogba can do with less of the accompanying fanfare.

Why not play attacking football and have teams scared of us?

11 goals and 14 assists in the PL in 60 appearances. That is great for a CM. Name 3 CM’s that have better stats than that in the PL.

Mourinho bought half of that mediocre defence unit Bailey and Lindelof ! So has to shoulder the blame for that one

I don't think he'll leave anytime soon. But if he did I'd make sure I have Milinkovic Savic signed up beforehand.

So why doesn’t he play the two centre backs that he’s bought for £70 million then?

We look under coached and an utter shambles as far as attacking goes. Spending £60 million on another centre back is not going to change that.

Jose’s approach to games needs to change. If it doesn’t then we are in for a very frustrating season.
