Thought you might go for him. I was hoping him or Gough survived the way back up.
Yep, very pleased with Miller. I did have my eye on Butcher (last minute snatch, there) - but that was because I had something specific in mind.

See you got Greig - so you fecked me over there, would've picked him this round, most likely, gambling on others (Mullery, specifically) remaining unfancied for another round).

There you go - worked out for the best, then. Of course, I might have gone Greig/Mullery but I felt like securing a pure finisher with the right sort of credentials, and I'm sure someone would've picked Aldridge sooner or later.

Cba to add pick times, have to be off now.

Btw, the tagging issue seems to remain - didn't get the last one.

Was about to post wtf, @Oaencha - but I presume this is about your theme.
It is mostly about the theme but Seaman was solid at QPR and had two phenomenal seasons at Arsenal between 90-92. Those two seasons alone make him a good addition (with talking points) to the draft.

He was good, certainly - but there are multiple options who were considerably better, so without the theme angle it would've been an odd choice.

Yeah I know the ones you’re referring to. This is a very niche draft and I want to have fun it. I usually take everything too seriously and get annoyed. My team will make sense from a tactics and chemistry perspective for sure. I’m also hoping we get some good debates about how talented these young-ish players were before they moved to the team which they’re remembered for. I just want to see some deviation from the usual match day analysis.

Yup, I've just messaged TRV yesterday to go with him if he makes it to us.

Didn't expect you to go with him considering the rest of your roster, but I guess it would be Mullery and Brady will be in the middle.

Aye - that's a given.

«Middle» is always relative, of course. But I won't give away anything but the obvious when I say that I'll be looking to field him in a setup that includes an actual left winger - like Arsenal's did when Brady was at his best for them).

It'll be interesting to see how Murdoch and Jinky fare here.

Unquestionable primes, perhaps harder to argue/document how well preserved they were in the relevant era.

Or, to put it another way, if it weren't harder to argue, they'd be first round picks easily.

Still haven't forgiven him for rinsing Thomas in the last minute of the 77 final and crossing for that permed terwat Sunderland to score.

I applaud that.

Still thinking of doing something left field myself.

Nothing overly dramatic, but still. The straight-arse 4-4-2 format is limited - and limiting. Big man/little man up front and all.

Could easily field certain players in perfectly «natural» roles without sticking 100% to an orthodox format in that respect.

I don't expect a lot of unorthodox formations tbh. Either straight up 4-4-2 or 4-3-3. Given the timeframe and player roles/specifics and lack of expansive full backs along plenty of hugging the touchline type of wingers it kinda limits the creativity off the top.

One of the things I wanted to do this Draft was pay homage to players who were great in their era without necessarily being great when thinking of an all time context.. Brooking and McGovern were legends for their teams but nobody would pick them if we aren’t playing this era

4-2-4 might be the most creative people could get.. Bypass the midfield and play long balls to your attackers

Well we don't see a lot of 442 vs 442 battles in other drafts, so should be refreshing in that context.

I'm thinking of using Phil Neal as a wingback provided other pieces fit in....

A never-nude? I thought he just liked cut-offs.
@Skizzo @Pat_Mustard

Just in case tagging still being temperamental.
Cheers mate. Got the initial tag okay but changed my mind about 20 times about who to pick. I may have went with heart over head but feck it, such a historically significant player deserves a good run out in this draft.

Well we don't see a lot of 442 vs 442 battles in other drafts, so should be refreshing in that context.

I'm thinking of using Phil Neal as a wingback provided other pieces fit in....
yeah nice change of pace. Really love good old 4-4-2's.

It'll be interesting to see how Murdoch and Jinky fare here.

Unquestionable primes, perhaps harder to argue/document how well preserved they were in the relevant era.

Or, to put it another way, if it weren't harder to argue, they'd be first round picks easily.
Some of the 60s boys were better 'preserved' than others. Thought Bremner might have gone a little earlier as he was still clearly playing to a high level into around 74/75 or so. You're right though, it's not as clear cut as those who bridge the 92 divide.

Yes - but Bremner, and certain others, are easier to establish as being right up there in terms of available evidence, as it were: They maintained a high level for several seasons past the cutoff point - and this is plain to see just from sheer stats (you could say). *

Others are far more problematic. Players who famously declined rather badly - Best being the obvious example, but some of the Lions too, I'd say.

Cutoffs are always difficult, though. Come match time it'll be a matter for the managers to provide evidence their chosen players (whose reputations clearly rest on exploits that precede the cutoff point) were still brilliant, very good, good or at least reliably decent in the current incarnations.

Overall status obviously means nothing in this context. The phenomenon of former world beaters turning into shadows of themselves was common enough back then, not least because the purely physical requirements were different.

* By which I mean that the player was an important part of teams that won major trophies.
